IFPA AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES & STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2023-24

Following on from a successful IFPA Australian & State Championship Series from 2022-23, IFPA Australia brings you the 2023-24 edition.  This year's version will be run pretty similar to last year's, with a couple of changes which you will see below.

Unlike previous years where the Top 2 ranked Australian players at the end of any given calendar year have the opportunity to represent Australia at the following year's World Championship, this year will see a change, and the ACS is included as part of that change.  For the 2024 World Championship, those 2 spots are being offered to just the end-of-year Top-ranked Aussie, along with the 2023-24 ACS Champion.  The IFPA19 World Championship will be held in California, USA on June 7-9, 2024

Once again, there will be two ways in which a player will be able to qualify for the 2023-24 ACS, which will be detailed below.  Full details for how each State Championship and the ACS will be contested are already up on the IFPA website.

ALL IFPA endorsed events held within Australia in 2023 with the $1 fee paid and where WPPRs are earned will be eligible for ACS qualifying.  Any events that have already been held in the 2023 calendar as at the time of this post will be retroactively applied.

The fees collected will be allocated to the prize pool of that state (60%), prize pool of the Australian Championship (25%), with the remaining 15% of the fees being withheld to IFPA to cover processing fees and World Chapionships expenses related to those payments.

Full information can be found on the IFPA website here:  http://ifpapinball.com/series/acs/2023/

2023 STATE/TERRITORY CHAMPIONSHIPS

At the end of the calendar year, the Top 16 (or 24) ranked players with the most WPPRs earned in each eligible state will be able to contest the IFPA State Championship in that area.  Each State or Territory's Championship will be contested on the same day throughout the country, currently slated for Saturday, February 3, 2024.

It is more than likely that players will have earned points in more than one state, however as each state's final will be taking place on the same day, they will only be able to participate in one State Championship and cannot win multiple State titles.  It is also possible for someone to win a State Championship title for a state or territory that they do not live in.

For a state to hold a Top 24 event, they must hold at least 50 unique events, with at least 200 unique players.

All State Championships will be contested under a best-of-seven (7), head-to-head, single elimination format.  All finalists for their State Championships will be seeded according to their best 20 WPPR results from that state.

The higher seeded player will have choice of machine or position for the 1st game, with the loser of each subsequent game having choice of machine or order, until someone has won 4 games. A machine may not be played more than once in the same match unless there are less than 7 machines available. If that is the case, only after all machines have been chosen can either player select that game to be played for a second time within the same match. Once a player verbally announces their game choice, or chooses position, that decision will be locked in and cannot be changed.

The Top 4 finalists in each State (or Top 6 for events with 24 finalists) once all matches are complete will be invited to attend the 2023-24 ACS event, to be held in Perth, as part of the West Coast Pinball Festival in March 2024 (dates to be advised).  The winner of each State Championship will also be crowned as a IFPA State/Territory Pinball Champion.  (NSW, for example, would be IFPA NSW State Pinball Champion).

Current standings for each State can be found here:  http://ifpapinball.com/series/acs/2023/standings.php

Any state with 16 finalists will have the following payout structure:

1st place – 30% of the prize pool

2nd place – 18% of the prize pool

3rd place – 12% of the prize pool

4th place – 8% of the prize pool

5th through 8th place – 4% of the prize pool each

9th through 16th place – 2% of the prize pool each

Any state with 24 finalists will have the following payout structure:

1st place – 28% of the prize pool

2nd place – 16% of the prize pool

3rd place – 10% of the prize pool

4th place – 6% of the prize pool

5th through 8th place – 4% of the prize pool each

9th through 16th place – 2% of the prize pool each

17th through 24th place – 1% of the prize pool each

2023-24 AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Once all State Championships and Top 4 (or Top 6 as mentioned above) from each state have been determined, the remainder of the field will be made up from the next eligible Top WPPR earners from their overall best 20 results nationally.  The full number of WPPR spots be dependent based on how many States will have Top 6 qualifiers.

There will be a total of 48 players for the ACS.  The 2023-24 event will be contested in the same format as the previous couple of years.

The 2023-24 ACS final will be contested over 2 days on 9th & 10th March 2024 in Perth, Western Australia, as part of the West Coast Pinball Festival.  Qualifying rounds will all be done on the Saturday, with finals to take place on Sunday.

Once all 48 finalists have been determined, they will be broken into 3 separate pools of 16 players, with seedings based on everyone's best 20 WPPR results nationally.

Pool A : 1,6,7,12,13,18,19,24,25,30,31,36,37,42,43,48.

Pool B : 2,5,8,11,14,17,20,23,26,29,32,35,38,41,44,47.

Pool C : 3,4,9,10,15,16,21,22,27,28,33,34,39,40,45,46.

There will be 5 rounds with 3 matches per round.  Each player will be grouped with each other player in their pool exactly once.

The top 5 players from each pool will advance to the elimination stage. In addition, a wild card entry will be given to the best 6th placed finisher.

Ties for qualifying positions will be resolved by a one game playoff. Players failing to advance from a playoff within their pool will remain eligible for any playoff for the wild card.

2023-24 ACS FINALS

The elimination stage will consist of best-of-seven (7), head-to-head, single elimination matches.  This is different to last year, which was best-of-5 game matches.  Players will be ranked by most pool stage points, then most ACS qualifying points.

In each round, the highest-ranked player will play the lowest-ranked player, the second-highest-ranked player will play the second-lowest-ranked player, and so on.

The higher-ranked player in a match will get choice of machine from all available games for game 1.  Choice will then alternate.  The other player in the match will get to choose player order.  No machine will be played more than once in the same match.

A 3rd & 4th place consolation final will be played in a best-of-three match.

This process will continue until there is one remaining player in the tournament, who will be declared the winner.  The winner be crowned with the title of IFPA Australian Pinball Champion and will also receive a trophy, a cash prize (value to be determined and posted soon) AND for the first time in 2024, will be given the opportunity to represent Australia at the 2024 World Championship, June 7-9 in Callfornia, USA.

The prize package will be determined based on the endorsement fees collected over the calendar year. All participants who make the final 16 in the IFPA Australian Pinball Championship will be awarded a cash prize. Here is the prize pool breakdown:

1st place – 30% of the prize pool + Trophy + Title of “IFPA Australian Pinball Champion” + IFPA19 World Championship spot (2024)

2nd place – 18% of the prize pool + Trophy

3rd place – 12% of the prize pool + Trophy

4th place – 8% of the prize pool

5th through 8th place – 4% of the prize pool each

9th through 16th place – 2% of the prize pool each

A big thank you goes out to all of the IFPA State Reps for their input, and to WA Pinball for kindly agreeing to host the 2024 ACS Finals.

After liaising with our IFPA State Reps and National Directors, we can officially announce details of the 2022-23 IFPA Australian Championship Series (ACS) and State Championships.

With COVID still being a big issue at the moment, the decision was made to scale back the Main Event slightly and we reverting back to the same format as the 2020 ACS that was held on the Gold Coast.

That being said however, there will be two ways in which a player will be able to qualify for the 2022-23 ACS, which will be detailed below.  Full details for how each State Championship and the ACS will be contested will be posted on the IFPA website in the coming days/weeks (link to be supplied shortly)

ALL IFPA endorsed events held within Australia in 2022 with the $1 fee paid and where WPPRs are earned will be eligible for ACS qualifying.  Any events that have already been held in the 2022 calendar as at the time of this post will be retroactively applied.

In all cases for all head-to-head matches, the highest available seed will play the lowest available seed, second-highest plays second-lowest and so on.  Highest seeded player of the match will get first machine choice from the machines available and will alternate for each successive game.  The other player will choose play order for that game.

The Top 4 finalists once all matches are complete will be invited to attend the 2022-23 ACS event, with a date and venue to be determined.  The winner of each State Championship will also be crowned as a IFPA State/Territory Pinball Champion.  (NSW, for example, would be IFPA NSW State Pinball Champion).

Any state with 16 finalists will have the following payout structure:

So placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in a sanctioned comp means nothing anymore?

This is getting hard to follow considering what I was previously told? Need to let my punters know what the actual deal is. Not what it was?

Or can I safely print the above and display it on site so it can be read by the punters giving them their own information. You know pinballers can be so lazy that they can't even remember which tuesday is the only tuesday of every week. They still forget.

Dave,

This is for the official IFPA State & National Championships.  This is what your $1 per person fee goes towards.

The 1st, 2nd & 3rd place for QLD events is for the QLD Invitational, which is an ADDITIONAL event, created as many players enjoyed this concept.  Details for that event can be found here:   https://www.aussiearcade.com/topic/98168-2022-qld-invitational-tournament/

I have also added links to the IFPA site for full details and current standings for each State in the main post.

Just a reminder that each state/territory final will take place on Saturday 4th February.  Aiming to run the ACS finals on Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th May at a venue and location still to be advised.

At this stage, QLD & Vic will be running Top 24 for their State finals, with all other eligible states/territories to run as Top 16.  If a player has qualified for multiple state/territory finals, they will be required to choose one event, as all finals will be run simultaneously.

Planning on having all event information for each state/territory announced by the end of this month to allow everyone enough to plan potential travel, etc.

@Lambo

Regarding machine selection for the best of 7 head to head state finals, the rules differ from here to the IFPA site ,which one is it? ,here says it alternates between players, IFPA site says loser has the choice

Here

"In all cases for all head-to-head matches, the highest available seed will play the lowest available seed, second-highest plays second-lowest and so on.  Highest seeded player of the match will get first machine choice from the machines available and will alternate for each successive game.  The other player will choose play order for that game."

IFPA

"Each match will be a best-of-seven. The higher seeded player will have choice of machine or position for the 1st game, with the loser of each subsequent game having choice of machine or order, until someone has won 4 games."

This is pretty epic, first planned for in 2019. There's been a few false starts to get this format up and running, but now we've finally got a format that matches North America and other Championships around the world! Should be a great day of competitions around Australia tomorrow!

This past Saturday, we saw 112 players right across the country battle it out over 6 hard-fought State/Territory Championship events.

This format was originally intended to be first ran back at the start of 2021, however with the COVID-situation at the time, along with IFPA competition on hiatus, this past weekend was the first attempt at running a similar style event to that of the North American Championship Series.

Not only did the winners of each tournament earn the title and the right to call themselves an IFPA State Pinball Champion, the Top 4 finalists in each State also earned their spot in the Australian Championship, to be held later this year in Brisbane on 6th & 7th May.

We now effectively have our first 24 finalists just about set for the Australian Championship, with the remaining 24 finalists to be invited based on their best 20 results from all Australian IFPA events from 2022. Invitations will be sent out over the coming weeks.

Here at IFPA Australia, we'd like to send our Congratulations to the Top 4 winners from each State Championship as follows:

A.C.T.:
1st - Aaron Draper
2nd - Paul Chamberlin
3rd - Shannon Paull
4th - Tom Lefebure

Full results - https://next.matchplay.events/tournaments/92539/standings

N.S.W.:
1st - Jayson Walsh
2nd - Aaron Crichton
3rd - Andrew Gliatis
4th - Collin Metcalfe

The first of the 2022-23 ACS qualifier invitations have been sent out this evening.

These were sent to the Top 4 finalists of each State Championship.  Please read instructions on how to register carefully.

Once this round of registrations have been claimed, then we will see if we need to go down the list of finalists for any state, before opening up final invitations from the top point earners in the country from 2022 (best 20 events), to fill the field of 48 players.

Full ticketing information for those extra events will be released shortly.

**ACS NEWS**

1) Amusement Machine Distributors (AMD) have come on board as a Major Sponsor for this year's ACS finals.

Along with their sponsorship, they will be graciously loaning us a Foo Fighters Pro pinball to use for the weekend's event.

A big thanks goes out to Michael Bowyer and the crew at AMD for their ongoing support of the pinball community here in Australia.

Amusement Machine Distributors - The Official Australian distributor for Stern Pinball.

2) There's a been a player line-up change for this year's ACS finals.

Brodie Dixon has been a late withdrawal, with Emily Cosson as the 1st eligible reserve taking Brodie's spot. No changes to the original player groupings however, except for a few seedings changes in Group A.  (See above for changes to groupings).

3) A Preliminary Games List is now available for ACS weekend (subject to change):

Genesis

Avengers: Infinity Quest

Time Machine

Batman '66

Future Spa

Johnny Mnemonic

Rick & Morty

Seawitch

Meteor

Trident

Alice Cooper's Nightmare Castle

Stars

Harlem Globetrotters

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

Black Knight: Sword Of Rage (Pro)

Magic Castle

The Shadow

Medieval Madness (CGC Remake)

Robo-War

Rush (Pro)

Led Zeppelin (Pro)

Foo Fighters (Pro)

The Mandalorian (Pro)

Supersonic

Aerosmith (Pro)

There will be a few more games added in the next week or so, with the above list of games subject to change.
The ACS event itself will only use about 20 games total, so not all of the above will be used for the Main Event.
