I have completed several Gottlieb EM & System 1 restores and was looking for another project when I saw this Tales from the Crypt project. The seller was very close to where my son is working so I thought why not. The seller said it was complete but since going through the parts I am missing a few parts including the legs, legs bolts, playfield glass, PF glass channels, and a few other bits. I'll be chasing up those parts and hopefully I can get them.

I'm not familiar at all with the complexity of this pin so it's going to be a huge learning curve.

The pin came to me in pieces and the parts arriving in several containers.

This looks like the cabinet harness including the speaker which is stuffed, will have to look for a new one.

This box has the transformer, several PCB, the shaker motor and bits and pieces that I haven't identified as yet. The fun part is trying to work out what wire goes were.

This box also had the ball shooter handle, which is supposed to have a piece on top of but is missing.

DMD, speakers and side rails. Not sure how they attach at the moment.

The cabinet itself has been pulled to bits. The bottom has been removed but he has provided a new one that I have to put in.

He has done some bogging on the back and other parts but this will have to be redone as it hasn't dried hard and I can dig it out with my finger nail. Not enough hardner I suspect.

I also was trying to work out how the head locks on to the cabinet and found the lock mech and realised that he had filled in the mech hole with bog. I also don't know what the other half of this lock looks like so not sure if I have it?

He has also pulled the head apart and made a new back for it. Not sure why as the old back looks alright and the new back is a third as thick as the original one?

The head box also needs a lot of work with several part de-laminating.

The head internal board, I assume the rest of the boards are in the boxes.

The backglass isn't too bad although there does seem to be some sort of water damage on the bikini girl on the left and the ladies face on the right side.

The playfield looks OK and is mylar protected, just needs a good clean. Luckily he didn't get around to pulling that apart.

As I said, this one is going to test me out as i'm going into new areas. I will start with what I know like fixing the cabinet etc and go from there. He did supply me with a set of decals so there is something else new to me. Normally I have to do stencils etc, but how hard can it be 😄

Good on you for taking this on and stepping outside your normal pinball parameters. A jigsaw as mentioned above.

If you you need a bottle of Novus and some fuses I'll see what I can do to help.

A brave challenge, but something ideal for a lockdown project. Like you said, you are VERY lucky the "fixer" didn't get 'round to stripping the playfield. Looking forward to your progress!

Oh, forgot to ask, what size glass does it need? I might have a spare here if that helps. I am near Hornsby(syd) so it would have to wait for the silliness to expire, but if I have one you are welcome to it. Returning a favour - I got a bunch for free years ago...

I'm still going through the parts that I have and just looking at the ball shooter.

Mine looks like this and is made of metal:

The only one i've been able to find is made of plastic, it also comes with a plastic head cover if you can find one in stock:

tftc_shooter_mop_1.png.1855d000d2fe779b64a905bb272e65d4.png

So it looks like mine has been drilled out and probably a button installed (as the parts box did include some buttons)

Anyone know where I could get and original one from with the mask cover?

At least the shooter handle isn’t broken. A lot of them were.

Oh wait just saw updated pix  it is drilled for a start button

All these resto threads makes me wish I wasn’t working. I’d look for a candidate if I had time. But public transport is essential even when we aren’t supposed to be going anywhere 🤔😂😂

Well I for one appreciatte the trouble you went to rescue a Hook pin and get it half way to my place.

I think IMO that was another pin with your help mate that saved one from the tip .  There is hope for this one as well.

Yeah, thanks for that. I  had seen that handle and I thought it looked a bit cheap. I have pretty much given up on looking for the handle as I've seen other posts of people looking years ago with no luck. I'm just going to go with the current handle for now.

I did find a mask at backalleycreations.com for half the price than the pinballcentre and it was solid.

This also popped up in FB the other day, probably cause I have been doing a lot of searching, and it looked like a good topper so I grabbed one.

It's only $72 AUD delivered and I have seen this same one on other sites for over $200USD.

That handle and mask cover look like great candidates for making a mold and casting them in metal. I can do aluminium and possibly brass casting but that is a bit trickier. If you can find someone who would let you have access to the originals for non destructive mold making (it won't harm them at all) then I would like to have a go!

Slow progress with the head and main cabinet, so much de-lamination and repair work to be done.

I have put the original back panel back onto the back box and have done most of the bondo work, just a few little bits to go.

1785701716_2021-08-3112_54_47.thumb.jpg.b1618d9ce9a280020e4c4483cb1b9908.jpg

Started working on getting the bottom back into the main cabinet as well, it's in very ordinary shape, and it will take a fair bit of work to get it right.

651920876_2021-08-3113_11_53.thumb.jpg.4e397c290e94750799f27829df804f0c.jpg

Not sure what the previous owner was trying to do but there is bondo every where, most of which I have had to remove. He was even trying to use bondo to fix de-laminated sections which just doesn't work, I have had to get rid of all that and now working of doing it properly.

I am also sealing the new bottom board as it particle board, don't wont to have to replace it again.

Doesn't look like i'll be getting the missing parts either, he is just not returning my call and texts, maybe I can follow up after covid? That's the risk of getting someone to do the right thing when you can't get there in person. At least the missing parts can be purchased, just another expense.

  • 3 weeks later...

Slowly getting there, I thought I had finished with the filling and sanding and gave it an under coat.

1711187380_2021-09-1613_43_17.thumb.jpg.763c6390fb53c2a129c8afd1fa46e8ee.jpg

But during the painting I noticed a few more spots that I have to fix and also another spot has de-laminated, probably during the final sanding.

The base cabinet is also coming along and hopefully the bottom will go on in the next few days.

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally finished repairing and painting the head, took longer than I hoped due to life getting in the way, but getting back into it. Looking at some decal install videos, some people paint and other don't, so not having put on decals before I thought that I would paint to make sure its smooth.

1747782145_2021-09-2715_26_49.thumb.jpg.69c1b42b411612ef880ec8e00115597a.jpg

Not sure if I will put the decals on at this stage or wait until I have worked out how and where all the insides go?

Have also finally fixed up the main cabinet bottom edge, it was pretty bad but happy with it now.

386981457_2021-09-2715_38_23.thumb.jpg.c5c4532d4b29921aa478920ee19ccb32.jpg

I was going to put the bottom on at this stage but I think i'll wait until after I have painted the inside, so I'll now start patching the rest of the cabinet.

Quick question on the head bracket that attaches to the cabinet, maybe someone can help.

Looking at the bolt hole for the bracket, there seems to be the remains of some sort of plastic bush. All I have is the bracket and the bolt, so not sure whether there should be some sort of washer or bush on both side or what? Can anyone advise on the correct setup and where I can buy these parts?

That’s coming along great. Can’t help on the above question but I can vouch for the black version decals if you haven’t decided which way to go.

The blue decals came with the pin so I will be going with them.
