Cps-1 game MERCS partial short

Question

Hi everyone, I have limited knowledge of PCB troubleshooting and am hoping someone may be able to help. I picked up an old MERCs game and the 5v pins are burnt, the jamma harness partially melted. I am getting a reading of 2.5 ohms between 5v and ground on the PCB. That resistance seems way too low and I suspect that is the reason for the charred pins and melted edge connector.

Am I right in assuming that? If so, what is the best way to go about finding the short? I have done a visual inspection and don't see any burnt components or anything that seems off.

I haven't been able to locate any schematics for the game.

Any help is appreciated, thanks a lot.

Yes, that’s a dead short.

Start by separating the board stack and measuring between 5v and ground on each. The short will likely only exist on one of the three boards.

visually inspect each board separately, something sinking that much current may well be obvious once the boards are apart.

Also eyeball the pins of the board interconnect connectors, I’ve met boards before with pins mashed together and crushed flat inside those.
