IFPA Australian Championship Series 2020

Recommended Posts

I’m new to the oz flip scene but would like to find my way to some of these events in the future. Living in cairns and spend a considerable amount of time at timezone with the couple of tables we have. I’d love to try my hand at few other games and looking to travel south for a flip trip (I also got fam in briz - so good op to shneak by)

I was reading and thinking about WWPRs and the ACS. There seems to be some division occurring with those not able to qualify for monetary/distance/motivation reasons.

Can I give you an comparison to golf/tennis? Imagine you play a few round/games at you local venue and win 3 in a row. That does not entitle you to play at the US Masters or Wimbledon. If you want to get there, you need to go on the “circuit” and compete against other top players. Then you are in the prestige money events. Some would rather just play golf/tennis at their local clubs and love a win against their friends. That’s fine and what’s great about sports - there are plenty of levels you can choose.

ACS requires a step-up nowadays to to reach it. A few years ago you could probably get a spot just staying local, but now unless you live in Brisbane or Melbourne, points are getting hard to achieve due to the size of the comps there. The State Championship series tries to broaden the entry around Australia and stop the heavy Qld/Vic stacking so smaller areas like SA and NSW (which are both growing) can get a representative look-in as well.

As said, the bigger the comps - more points. The higher the ranked players, more points. It’s the way it’s done in other sports and has worked well for decades. Pinball now has to catch up due to numbers participating. If you feel left out - there are choices:

1. Stay local and enjoy local competitions - it a game and it is fun!

2. Step up your play skills and head to events that attract higher players - it can be intimidating though but it’s your choice.

3. Get to my level and watch your skills get overtaken - my results are sliding and that’s fine. Still love socialising and competing and realise there won’t be many more podium finishes but there will be drinks, laughter and good times.

4. Start your own tournaments ! These can be home events if you have machines and may not attract WPPRs if you prefer. They can be registered with the IFPA and you can become a TD. If there is a venue nearby, maybe ask if you can run events there. Coin-drop events work as well if you don’t have key access. Give back to the community, introduce new players, teach, have fun (TDs are saying “what, fun”).

Express your views here - it’s great to hear and learn what people want, but change is the only constant and you need to adapt or will be lost in the flow. Chat to your State reps as well - we all listen and respond and things will evolve over the next few years.

Gents, a reminder that the cut off line is this Friday, giving you 5 days to RSVP to Dan and pay for the main event.

I count 16 spots in the original top 48 that have not yet responded.

If you haven't received the email, and your name says invited, reach out to Dan ASAP.

List updated daily, after payment received:

This literally has nothing to do with what I brought up

Interesting thread this.In my case I have been playing pinball for decades and every now and then get the urge to play comps.Trouble is there does not seem to be a list(at least I cannot find one) of all the comps being played around the country.I live in Geelong.Oh out of curiosity who is the oldest player in the top forty rankings?

What happens after the cut off time?

From Dan's email:

must be paid by Friday, 17 January 2020 to confirm your spot in the ACS. Otherwise, your place will be given to the next person on the list.

I presume that applies to the original top 48 only. People invited beyond that would get additional time as they were not originally invited.

@Michi keeps a thread on upcoming tournaments - https://www.aussiearcade.com/forum/p...g-competitions

You can also find them through the ifpa website - https://www.ifpapinball.com/calendar/

If you download the IFPA app or look at the IFPA website, you'll be able to view up coming tournaments there. There will be at least 3 a month in Melbourne this year so perhaps come to one of these? One of the other regulars lives down your way too and the great thing is you'll be going against peak hour traffic ;) Isn't that right @ozsammyboy ?

Oh, I'm about the oldest and can give the youngsters a run for their money:)

Yes, I am from Geelong (don't hold that against me). There's a monthly competition held at the Golden Fleece hotel which is very convenient to get to from Geelong - that one has a pretty chilled vibe too. Perfect competition to start off with.

How do I pay for the comps? Do you have bank details for a transfer?

You should have received an email from Dan at your IFPA registered email address highlighting the payment details. Check your spam folder. If you haven't, contact ausifpa@gmail.com ASAP and update your email with IFPA via https://www.ifpapinball.com/user-profile/

Ok I'm coming.

This time i'm not bunking with someone who snores in a AirBNB share house with guests that shower at 4am with paper thin walls. DUMB.

So I will have more than 1 hour sleep for Saturday :)

Who needs sleep on major comp weekends anyway??

At least one of my two housemates on Melbourne Matchplay weekend 2017. I was the "someone who snores in a AirBNB share house" and spent most of the weekend on the couch as a result. :sleep

That is correct Nic and thanks for adding that.

Most of the top 48 have either confirmed their attendance or responded to the email sent. There are a couple who unfortunately haven't responded to the original email or the reminder email.

I am waiting on 7 more spots to be filled to close off registrations. Emails will go out to more outside the Top 48 over the weekend if any of the top 48 haven't confirmed their attendance before then.
