Legend of Makai pcb

Andyj965

Question

Hi All,

I have a Legend of Makai pcb that has graphics issues. There is also no audio. The game loads and starts a game. Hoping someone can give me some ideas on what may be the issue?

Thanks,

Andy

Looking at the pcb I noticed a couple of capacitors look very suspect. I'll remove them from the board to test them out of circuit tomorrow but they look toastedfe20e51e0806afc993b8d71b44d0ce71.jpg5b46f666e2337cf5406aec2558e468db.jpg

If you're going to remove them, just replace them. Those two big blueys would be the main filter caps of the 12 volt feed for the output IC.

Is there any hiss (amp noise) coming out of the speaker while it's running?

I'm definitely going to replace them. The testing was more to confirm they're buggered. I might not get any replacements until next week and if I know they're gone I won't do anything more until they arrive. In the unlikely event they're ok I'll keep looking. I wouldn't say there's a hiss but there is a slight hum

Check for video ground missing. Look at the trace on the PCB going to that pin and see if it's missing or damaged.

Same thing for the audio. 10 and L are the pins for audio. Both pins should go back to the amp if it's a bridged amplifier. One pin to the amp and one to ground if it's not.

The video ground connects up to ground from pins 27 & 28 and goes around the entire board. There is some damage around some trace on the solder side of the board but it doesn't appear to have gone through the actual trace. I can see continuity between pins but without a schematic it is difficult to know if it's between the correct pins as the trace terminates under sockets and you can't see which pin it goes to from there.

I also get continuity between the audio pins and the amplifier.

I haven't removed the capacitors yet as I figured I'll wait until I have replacements to install

There is also a hack from a previous fix but there also seems to be continuity there

Once it's all confirmed I'll be spraying those areas with pcb lacquer
