Judge Dredd restoration

Recommended Posts

I'll start by saying that this won't be a quick restoration thread like Woka's (He's a machine and sets a bad example for the half arsed among us [emoji16]). Anyone that knows me knows my projects take a fair while. In fact anyone that knows me will be surprised I've done this much [emoji3]

I bought this as a parts machine years ago and it's sat in the garage while I've been collecting the missing parts.

It had no boards, a partially populated playfield and a solid but worn cabinet.

I finally started stripping the cab today so I can apply new decals. I'll also be installing inner side decals.

The legs, hinges, rails and lockdown bar are all at the powder coater. I've gone with black as the mix of silver, gold and black has always annoyed me with JDs and going all brass sends the costs over the top for me.

The playfield has been restored by savage.

I'll be posting more pics as I make progress

I did look at matte but it's not the look i'm after. Prefer the shiny gold

I've always liked the matte gold powdercoat look on a JD. It kind of matches the topper if it's the matte version like this one:9e0c6f00ada498551c01e549b9ad86ff.jpg

So I need to do a couple of little repairs and I've read differing information. Is it best to use an epoxy putty for corner damage? Also with lifting ply layers should you glue the layer down or cut it away and use filler/bog?

Thanks

It really depends on the severity of the ply layer damage. We all do things slightly different but I know what works for me and what I am comfortable with. For the corner damage, I would just use builders bog but epoxy will be more than suitable too as I have seen this product being used and looks the goods. It could depend on where the damage is located. On the head box, it doesn't need to be harder or that much better than builders bog but on the bottom of the cab where the legs attach, maybe epoxy? Either way, make sure you use these to keep the leg off the cab and protect the decals.....

I had some bad and sizeable ply damage on the rear of my recent LW3 restore and used Earl's Powder Putty from Bunnings. Worked well and sanded down easily using an orbital sander with 80 grit. Here are some pics of the cab's corner damage (builders bog used) and the ply damage.

As you can see, it turned out well and I was more than happy with the final result....

Up to you whether Builders Bog or epoxy is used but both will do the job. There could even be other suggestions and options. Your choice but good luck with it.

Thanks mate. That's quite a bit worse than my damage. I'll pick up some of the bog as well as the stick of epoxy putty. My roadshow has worse damage so it'll come in handy for it also

I agree with @Glenn70 I use selleys builders bog for those corners and also use the leg plates.

There are others that use resin but in a home use environment I find the machines don't get shaken to death, have never had bog shrink, crack or fall out, it's easy to use sands well but still preparation is key, no loose bits and pieces, tear them off, glue them down or sand them back.

If you have too many projects, pass one my way (cheap of course) :D

  • 1 year later...

So I figure its time to update this.

I ended up getting @raysco to finish painting my cab and do the decals due to limited space and time.

He did a great job. Couldn't be happier. Unfortunately my decals weren't good any more. They had shrunk after sitting for a long time. So I picked up new decals from pinballdecals.eu which really suited the pin. They have a matt finish which gives them more of the comic book (2000ad) feel.

I decided to get the trim done all in black and am really happy with the look so far. The original silver rails and lockdown bar, gold legs and black hinges always seemed to me like they were just using spares they had left over.

I've also put the art blades on.

Still a way to go but definitely coming along. 1b531aeaf16c0547ae0c4a76580580ac.jpg85504d0604b17384e12e12c6710a59d4.jpgd9a2793073df7e247689ccf86d470806.jpgb3d59147547c1874b1c06d029e1f10a4.jpg

Very nice. I will be restoring a JD next year and will need to decide on the exact colour of the trim (rails, legs, lock down bar, hinges, etc). The black looks nice and love the art blades too. Nice job.

What colour did @raysco paint the cabinet? Blue to match the decals or black?

Thanks mate.

For me there were only three options for colour.

Brass with a clear powder coat which would have been ridiculously expensive

Blue which could look great if you get the right blue

Black which is obviously a safe option but also works really well with some colour combinations

I really wanted the brass option initially due to seeing one on pinside but now I have the black trim installed I definitely prefer it
