Funny you should ask..

Spent the last two nights building three sets that I found mashed into a cardboard box outside the Salvos over the weekend, the original boxes were there but were burst and torn up, with most of the pieces loose in the bottom of the box with random bits of junk.

Bought it on the spot for $10

Theres a few missing pieces I need to track down replacements for, for some reason all the tiny rare pieces are there, whats missing are mostly standard Lego parts.

It's the Hogwarts Express set, Hagrid's Cottage, and The Chamber of Secrets sets.

if u have the instruction manual a list of every part used in the set and its code are at the back plus quantity needed.

i recently got a lego set of gumtree and there were a few missing pieces. it took about an hour but i quickly went checked and counted what i had. come up with a list and ordered them online. arrived a couple weeks later and i was able to build the model :)

even if u dont have the manual they can be found in pdf format online pretty easy. i have been tempted to get a couple and see how cheap i could build another set with the pieces i have and just order the few parts i dont have.

let me know if u need any links .

to answer original post. i have built a heap of minecraft lego for my kids and a couple of the lego movie sets over the xmas holidays. i enjoy it, and its good for just zoneing out for a couple hours.

Ahhhh adults and their toys. Some people never grow up ;p

Oh wait...I still play video games.. doh

It's a funny phenomenon toys and adults that play them. There are always critics that say you should grow up and start acting like an adult. But now you are seeing evidence that it is good for you.

Case in point are books. The best selling books are actually adult colouring books and lo and behold they are considered mindful and good for your health. Gee who would have thought it would be good for you to do something fun.

To playing with toys and good health I say.

Unfortunately these ones don't, not sure when they started doing that but its true for all the modern stuff. These are from 2002 and the manuals are pretty nasty, for some reason they are all colour shifted too, whats light grey in reality is brilliant white in the manual, light green is brilliant green, it is almost as if the drawings were photos taken with very bright flash. It isn't a fading issue either as it is on all pages.

The lego site is useful, you can generate a list of parts based on the set number, but the lists are not complete. Thankfully most of whats missing are fairly generic parts anyway.

Lego are really cashing in on the adult scene recently, those sets that are $500 or more with the 16+ age range on them, am sure it should really say 35+

Anyway who wants to grow up fully, sounds very boring.

Be different in all things, health, wealth, happiness and hobbies. Normal sucks!

@Pop Bumper Pete. I didn't know that was out yet. Let us know what you think of it when your done.

there is a huge support on the web, Ive been using rebrickable.com for this little project. always wanted it but couldn't justify the price so im just buying all the pieces...seemed like a good idea at the time.

How economical is it doing it that way??

I wouldnt have thought it would be much cheaper than buying the full set.

How did that work out for your price wise, was wondering if its cheaper to pick up a parts list than to just buy the set.

asking price on that set is around $2,500 to $3,500

the total bill will be around $1,300 but I think that its one of the very few sets that doing it that way is cheaper, the other being the UCS Millennium Falcon.

Most of the other discontinued sets Ive been looking I can pick up off ebay for a good price

its also very time consuming, doing an order can take hours but in this case its the only way ill get this set, and its also just small cost outlays over time and that helps

Ho-Lee-Crap!!'

What was the set price before they were discontinued and became rare?

Wonder if the brick trading and parts database phenomenon is behind the recent increase in colours for part, to make old bricks less useful to make the modern designs.

Back when some of the Star Wars sets came out, Myer had a 25% off sale so we went and grabbed the star destroyer, mill falcon, x-wing unfortunately even with the discount on the rrp of $699 the budget didn't stretch for the death star too :( something the kids and i do together, same as pinball and console games. We missed the brickvention on a few weeks ago here in Melbourne. They generally have sellers with some of the older hard to get sets avail and not rip-off prices.

Actually it was $450 !

I still remember seeing it in Toy World about 10 Years ago and I still kick myself for not getting it !

This is a great hobby to invest in, especially if you don't open the boxes and keep them in good shape.

Here is some of my collection:
