and a couple of pics of my Astro City.

Had Jomac redo the chassis a few months ago. Only other thing I needed to get, was the instruction space insert from dragonlee

Now its very neat, and in original condition.

I ended up receiving my CPS2 multi kit. Had a chance to install it onto my B board, and test it only for 10 mins, as Ive been sick with flu, and just want to sleep. Took some quick pics of the kit installed, and had a quick play of SSF2 Turbo to test.

Upgraded my speakers last night, using a pair of satellite speakers from the Logitech z5500.

Found a z5500 set for sale which had a non-functioning amp, which was great news for me as i only needed the satellite speakers.

These speakers were a direct screw in fit, no cutting or drilling required.

The factory Astro City negative speaker wiring slips straight onto the negative terminals of these speakers. The positive terminal on the Logitechs however, use a slightly larger terminal, so I made a short wire with crimp connectors on either end, as you can see in the photo, so as to keep the original Astro City wiring in tact, without any cutting.

I was going to hook them up to a small amp etc, but to be honest, I was just after simplicity, and ANYTHING is better than the crap Sega put in there 🙂

Hard to explain the improvement in sound. Best I can explain, is they are 'punchier'. Very happy with them. Much better once you use an amplifier / stereo on them though.

z5500 series - general google image of them:

This is what the satellite looks like out of its casing. These are actually manufactured for Logitech by 'Tang Band'

Model W3-593SF

EDIT: Fixed pictures

A couple of months after these photo's were taken, I ended up putting a small sub in my cabinet too.

I used the Edifier S330D as the amp/sub, as it fit snug behind the coin box area.

What I done, was in the control panel area where all the wiring is, you'll see that the speakers have a 4 pin male plug, which plugs into a 4 pin female connector. This female connector ends up eventually routing into the JAMMA harness for audio (turns the 4 wires into just 2 / mono).

I bought a second 4 pin female connector (part numbers here http://www.evolvingconsole.com/2012/...er-connectors/ ) , and connected some speaker wire from that new 4 pin female connector, through to the speaker inputs on the Edifier sub/amp. Then on that sub/amp combo, I used its RCA connections, and hooked it up to my CPS2 RCA connections. Amplified stereo sound, with woofer, using factory speaker locations.

In short, I have modified the cabinet in a way that it is completely reversible, no wires had to be chopped.

Also, if I want to change games to an older JAMMA game with no stereo, all I need to do, is simply open my control panel, unplug the 4 pin male speaker connection from my newly installed 'stereo' 4 pin female speaker connector, and plug the male 4 pin (speakers connector) back into the OEM 4 pin speaker connector in the control panel.

Eventually I'll have to take some pics. I used a lot of cable ties and followed factory harness routing. Came up very neat!

Hi @bradray

@darksoft on this forum sells the kit. He is in Spain. Best to contact him for details.

Earlier in the year, converted to AUD, I paid $450 AUD delivered. I think the price is higher now though.

It was a bit of a hit in price, but it was a lot cheaper than buying multiple CPS2 boards, and a lot easier for me than changing boards all the time.

That price is for the kit itself. You will also need a CPS2 A+B donor board which you provide yourself - needs to be dead i.e. not running on battery anymore / suicided / phoenixed. I already had one of these boards at the time, so it was beneficial to me.

Its not probably for everyone due to the up-front cost. It's well-suited to someone who is really dedicated to the CPS2 catalogue and wants it running on original hardware. Otherwise the Pandora Box 3 is a high contender after this, and excellent value for money!!

@joele made the LCD case using a 3d printer, based on a template made by someone in the USA. I don't believe he is selling them anymore though, so you can obtain the 3d printing template from the below link, and use a 3d printer/get a place which does 3d printing to print it up.

Astro City 2

Background story

In the mid 90s, I used to play 'rainbow edition' of SF2 Champion Edition, on an Astro City 2, at Playtime/Galaxy World at Liverpool Westfield, NSW. In 1999, I found that I had a strange attachment to that machine and phoned them up to ask if they would sell the machine. They agreed, and charged $700 delivered for the machine, which came with the CPS1 PCB.

Upon the delivery date, they called me to confirm the delivery time, and claim they were supposed to charge $2000, and that they had made an error with the original price, but would honour the agreed paid price. Not sure if this was a sales-tactic, or if I was lucky - either way, was just happy I had the machine.

A couple of months after purchase, the left hand side joystick was busted. I was 14, naive, and didn't have a clue about arcade machines, and was only starting to learn electronics, soldering etc in school. I took the control panel to a local arcade shop, and asked for 2 new sticks. They butchered out the sanwa's and grinded out their brackets, and put in a pair of MCA's.

Fast forward to 2007, I thought I was done with the arcade world, and needed money, and made the mistake of selling the machine. I kept the 'rainbow' CPS1 PCB and still have it, and sold the machine with Hyper Fighting PCB instead.

Here is a pic of it, which was from the owner I first sold it to:

Before3.thumb.JPG.dab6751a5cedfa443fb9e7feac6a0aac.JPG

Only a year later in 2008, I was back in the arcade world with a wooden stand-up cabinet. It just didn't fill the void, and had regrets ever since. That wooden cab still lives at my parents house with an Elf board, and my brother has inherited it.

I bought an Astro City 1 in 2014, and still have it to this day (see page 1 of this thread). Has been an awesome machine, but still, nostalgia was getting the better of me. Searching through the Aussie Arcade forum for general Astro City stuff after buying my Astro 1, I found the old Astro 2 had ventured through 2 owners since myself in some for sale threads.

Fast forward to October 2015, the most recent owner decided to sell up his collection, and was only around the corner from me. Massive thanks to Mikie for the machine. Great humble guy, and was very helpful to me and my dad. Eight years had passed, and I was finally reunited with my same childhood machine. This time around, I vowed never to sell it again, and decided to give it the light overhaul it deserved.

Here is a pic of it on arrival:

Arrival.thumb.jpg.974f35c02b9d7d3fbc2a93580bd52b03.jpg

I was deciding whether or not I go for a full blown respray & restoration, or whether I just give it a decent tidy up. I ended up deciding to just give it a tidy up. Main reasons being that I wasn't after perfection, and I knew it would probably get scratched in transport in the future if I move home.

Below are the before and after shots of a few aspects of the machine I tidied over the last few months. I done it very slowly in spare time over the last few months.

1. Nanao chassis

Green garbled display - serviced by Jomac (thanks Joey). The rear service area for the chassis on the Astro 2 has a fair bit more room to work with than the Astro 1.

MonitorFixed.jpg.fc14cd775717bab936b290d8f39279eb.jpg

2. Speaker surround.

It had yellowed like most Astro 2 and New Astro's, and had been resprayed back to white at some point, but was more of a matte finish.

Being in the industry, my father-in-law resprayed it with auto paint. So happy with the result.

I also went to a bolt specialist, and purchased truss phillips screws, as well as security torx bolts etc. for the speaker surround. The bolts had been changed at some point in the past, and I wanted to match them as close to OEM as possible. Thanks to 'Rat' (AA) and 'Loki'(ArcadeOtaku) for giving me reference photos and measurements of the original bolts.

SurroundReinstalled.thumb.jpg.8a0aa4d34f0d491a0413c3fece4c79ab.jpg

3. Base chassis.

The base had a crack down the side, and had 4 bolts and a support plate put in at some point by Galaxy World. I was looking for a replacement base chassis, but hard to find on their own, so my father-in-law repaired it with fibreglass re-inforcement, and sprayed/blended it with auto paint. He also touched up a small area on the front panel surrounding the monitor, which had some light gouges and marks.

Massively grateful for all his time and help in getting this machine looking good again!

4. Control Panel & 100 Yen decal.

I really wanted an original 100 Yen decal. They're a lot thicker than reproduction decals, and as such fit more flush with the rest of the panel once stuck on. That being said, it came to a price of around $50 AUD delivered at the time of purchase for a genuine Sega 'new old stock' item:

http://www.arcadeinvaders.com/index.php?cPath=3_15&osCsid=uirdg5tsvlh7c8t1p9difn4c80

The control panel is a stainless 'licensed by Sega' panel, which I believe are manufactured by Sanwa. I obtained it in a trade-deal with a friend of mine (thanks Dane). I wanted the original green/pink look, and 2L12B layout, rather than 7 buttons a side.

The coin slot is a chrome one from 'hklegend' which came with the machine. I have since obtained the white/discoloured to yellow plastic slot, and am keeping that as a spare if I have a change of heart. The chrome slot has kind of grown on me. I purchased some replacement control panel bolts from 'hklegend' as well.

1499570712_CPand100Yen.jpg.2b81ea5a2b68f4b5fce382ede49b46bf.jpg

5. General tidy up.

A few of the OEM cable tie straps had come off. Stuck them back to the body with double-sided tape. Also used a few extra cable ties here and there, as well as reflowed solder + heatshrink on a couple of exposed pins on the JAMMA connector.

Finished product, and my two machines lined up:

In addition to the above, also like to thank 'AeroCityMayor'(ArcadeOtaku) for generously donating a coin chute, to my dad and uncle for transporting it multiple times with me over the years, to my mum for helping me organise the machine's purchase back in the day & buying me the 100 Yen sticker as a birthday present, to my wife for being so cool with supporting the hobby and having these quirky machines hanging around inside the house, and finally to everyone in the AA community and ArcadeOtaku who helped answering technical questions/odds and ends parts for this machine and others.

Thanks all. Hope you enjoyed the story and pics!

After finally getting a PDF copy of an English Astro City 2 manual (e-mailed to me by SEGA who advised they didn't have a hard copy to sell me new), I uploaded it online and printed a copy for myself and bound it.

Then a good friend of mine just bought me an original Japanese one as a finishing touch.

Awesome job mrjamma :D can you post or PM a link to the English Astro City 2 manual? I gave up looking for one for my cab long ago but would still love to have one :) I think many people would be keen to get one.

hey @Rat . sure

I uploaded to Arcade Otaku wiki page

http://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/images/5/57/SegaAstroCity2Manual.pdf

I also made a thread on AA end of last year http://www.aussiearcade.com/showthread.php/83428-Astro-City-2-Owners-manual-PDF?highlight= and I made a thread on the forum at ArcadeOtaku, as many others were chasing it

Hopefully helps some people out. Enjoy!

Cheers
