This project started 2 years ago

Today I spent 30 mins and started to assemble my prototype

Here's some pics so far.

Just spending small amounts of time on this here and there (a time consumer) as other projects are finished too

http://www.dsbelec.iinet.net.au/LAI_KZ-001-sm.jpg

I picked up 4 or 5 chassis in this kind of condition, and am restoring this one first (One or 2 are worse)

http://www.dsbelec.iinet.net.au/LAI_KZ-002-sm.jpg

Flyback on

Heatsinks and shields on

http://www.dsbelec.iinet.net.au/LAI_KZ-003-sm.jpg

More to follow . . . I bought all the parts years ago, so I have to track them down in my shed. (I cleaned the shed a few weeks ago, so there is hope . .

Looking good Dez! I'm looking forward to building one of these myself one day. The job you did on the PCB's is first class! Where did you manage to find new High voltage transformers and the other parts to suit this chassis? I can only imagine that LAI still had some old stock. I see you're using the STK0080 amps, so this is obviously going on a 20" tube?

Regards,

Johns-Arcade.

Hi John

This HV transformer was the one you gave to me a few years ago, the other ones I make will re-use the flyback from them

I have a few - 4 or 5 more

I only have whole chassis' to redo, no scratch builds unfortunately.

I have my eye on a sheet metal bender/roller/guillotine as we speak, to make some metalwork up

As for the use of the STK0080's, yes this one will be 20", for my battlezone, which sits in a bad state, as it did when picked it up. I have repro side-art for it (Should get that scanned before I apply it actually)

I have plans to use STK100's for a 25" Screen too, maybe a Cocktail 25" ???

I bought some STK-040's too (and 50's), maybe for a 12" B&W screen I have (To be used as a test bench)

So many plans . . .

From me, ok, you must have given it a good clean :)

Put me down for some metal work when you get your bender/roller/guillotine. I was thinking of using my re-build for my vector test monitor, which will use a 12" B/W tube, so I'll use the STK0040's in mine, with the smaller neck board.

By the sounds of it, I see a Battlezone restoration thread soon.

Johns-Arcade.

Have you got a chassis? I assume so. Only some of the metal gets really rusty, so that's what I will remake

Is that the same for you? Just the thin "tin" stuff?

Yes Dez, I still have chassis I can re-build, and just the thin metal is rusted on mine too.

Cheers!

Well, this is more than 3 years in the making since I started, but time is precious. Life gets in the way

Here is the progress I made today towards making my trashed battlezone game a reality

http://www.dsbelec.iinet.net.au/LAI_KZ-progress-sm.jpg

The parts Mike send me years ago are finally getting fitted. Thanks again

This PCB has a few errors - Oops. It was early days, and a prototype.

I completely forgot to mark a few caps (No cap screen print at all, LOL), and made spacing a little too big on other caps

Some of the parts are left off my list too, so there will be updating to do

I can say, I seriously doubt I will ever do another run of this PCB again, so John and I will have the only 5 made.

I look forward to the day I can turn this on and get a picture (I hope)

Hey mike

There are 3 caps with a different symbol.

http://www.dsbelec.iinet.net.au/LAI-KZ-XYB-Colour-BETTER.jpg

Are they NP caps? C202, 203, 204. The cap kit guy sent me regular elect.

The old caps have no pos or neg marked.

Looks like it's an electrolytic capacitor

This is getting close now

I have more parts to order, and a few to figure out (Inductors/caps etc)

Note to John: The pinouts for the transistors are correct but the image orientation (Transistor picture on the board) is not.

This type of trannie

http://www.dsbelec.iinet.net.au/GE3TO92-40.jpg

Unfortunately I didn't know that most old pinouts are available in 3 types. Most were ECB, some older alternatives are CBE, and modern alternatives are EBC

When the boards were done years ago, all were done as modern EBC, so none line up with original items. If you look at the pic below, all the transistors are on a 45 degree angle (LOL)

Also, there are tons of typos, and omitted IDs, and some bits too close to others. Oh well, if it works I am fine with this

5 or 6 years have passed

I now have a good diagram to work from.

I forget who started this diagram, but I finished it today

LAI 20" KZB chassis Schematic

Somehow I missed the updates to this thread, so good to see you making progress Dez. Only 5 or 6 years Dez? Sounds like it's bang on schedule with my time frame!! :D

Johns-Arcade.

This is the hardest board to assemble yet. It's all in 1, it's tight, it's poorly marked (By me) LOL

The parts are obsolete, and some were ordered 3 years ago - so buried in the shed. Ahhh

The original diagram is illegible, the re-drawn one is imperfect, I have found. At least I can fix it now

Still making progress.

Fitted more parts today, here's the pic

http://www.amazingarcading.com.au/LAI_KZ-Assy-01-sm.jpg

I sent my Lunar Lander PCB away to be fixed about a year ago, and just got it back this week, so I need this new chassis to be going in that cab to "look after" the LL PCB so to speak

I intend to make 2 more of these 20" ones, one for Battlezone, and one for Asteroids.

Then I would like to build a 14" one as well, since the components are slightly different on that one

Where did you send your Lunar Lander pcb to get repaired Dez?

Great to see you getting back to this one, who would have thought these would be reproduced. When do you expect to fire it up Dez?

I sent it to Road.runner on KLOV, he seems to be really busy.

I know what that's like. Your LL cab is all ready to go from memory Dez. Is it just the monitor to be sorted now?

Johns-Arcade.

Yes mate, that chassis in there is presently showing 1/2 screen. Love them vectors :rolleyes

If you need a correct diagram, here is the latest.

http://www.dsbelec.iinet.net.au/LAI-KZ-XY-Schematic_2015_DB_Rev-01.jpg

Them pots we were talking about are R511B & R611B on that diagram

Will get the pic of the pots in a few mins (On the old chassis)

- - - Updated - - -

The pots are here

This is an easier to get to board, but has the same mods

Horizontal or vertical missing? Sounds like one of the STK0080's has failed, or associated drive circuits.

Seeing your picture has reminded me of this mod, and I have seen a few of these LAI chassis with this done, but from memory if was only on the 20" model.

Cool, thanks. I think it only exists on my 20" ones. Any ideas on what it actually adjusted?

On this repro PCB,looks like I added spots for the pots in series. Cool :)

Another question John, are them 3 x small grey caps in the pic above non polarised?

Do you remember?

Correct Dez, that one I do remember as I've replaced a few of those and I'm sure I still have spare caps in stock :)

Great, thanks John

Got a part number please? :)

I have a few Chassis to do

Oh, and can you use a normal electrolytic?
