Foot's Cocktail Resto

Well I do believe the time has come to start breathing some life into my old (well aren't they all) LAI cocktail cabinet.

I may have mentioned before that it runs a Gallag PCB and it is destined to stay that way.

It's definitely had a hard life and the cabinet has suffered some water damage as well as it's share of knocks and bumps.

I had been tossing up what to do with it, but the plan now is to restore to it's former glory.

So the first stage of the resto will be the recon phase, where I'll pull it down and see what the damage is and compile a "Parts Wanted" list to ascertain what the wallet damage will be. While I'm at it I'll also measure and map out all the cabinet dimensions for use on a second cab to be built later down the track.

So as always here's the before shots

I'll keep you posted

The LAI cocktail cabinets have only enough room for a 14 inch monitor if built to the exact same measurements of an original, you can fit a 15 inch in if you make some small adjustments to the control panel supports. As for a 19 inch, I think you would have to alter the dimensions of the whole cab. I am speaking from experience here as I have built many of these cabs.

Pulled the top off it and had a closer look. Hmm water damage is pretty bad on one corner and if you look at the table top you can see where water damage has occurred around where I've removed the class clip (its swelled so much it broke the laminate around the clip)

Monitor surround has similar damage around 3 sides, appears it was stapled in position.

I'm surprised I could see through the glass it was that badly scratched.

So far looks like I'm up for replacing all the laminate sides, the top, glass and artwork, and monitor surround.

Should get better from now on

Well, the pic says it all. Stripped that little sucker bare. Boy they really didn't spend too much time on each unit when they whacked these together!

There is about 2 reusable panels on the whole cab so I think I'll replace the lot.

Still got some thinking to do about what the replacement panels will be made of. I've a pic in my head, just need to do some research into the finish

Still got a few more measurements to take before I draw the plans to scale as well

Before I attack the CP's I want to scan the "what ever the hell it is" artwork. I've got a Cannon iD35, don't know how well that will work.

Anyway before the poor cab can go back together I've got to prep the Old Pajero for sale. Selling cars shits me. Oh well the replacement should be worth it, I'll grab a snap when we get it:D

Okay, these are my plans for an LAI Cocktail cab with a 14" monitor.

They are not CAD or anything fancy, just hand drafted (I use the term drafted very loosely) with a crappy pencil that won't scan well, hence the quality.

Hope they are of some help. If anyone has the time to turn them into CAD feel free.

I've also finished cutting and routing all the pieces for the cab. I'll post them later today. Here's a snap of the old mans workshop, makes cab building too easy

Got all my bits and pieces pre sanded ready for assembly. The only original panel to be used will be the base.

All the pieces are cut from a single 1800 X 1200 sheet of 18mm hoop pine furniture grade plywood. Ply came from "Brims" over at Yeerongpilly and cost about $85. The stuff is sold as seconds as it has slight thickness variances (less than 1 mm). The base is 12mm ply.

Hopefully by next weekend I'll have most of it all back together, t-moulding, cab exterior final workup etc. Still have to get new legs made (old ones are bent from excess weight being sat on the cab), some excess button holes in the cp's welded up.... shit, there's always something else to do

Slowly, needs to get get more t-moulding for the top, make new legs, powder coat, bla bla bla

Heres a couple of pics. Sunlight makes it look lighter than it actually is. I ended up going for the stained looked as it will be in next to the pool table. It is just a shade lighter than the table so it should look good.
