Being a postie, I always keep an eye out for tellies during hard rubbish times. Last time I saw a tellie was about 4 years ago, a 34cm which I picked up. Really is the end of an era. Makes me wish I had been less shy about picking stuff up.

It's been this way for the last few years. CRT resellers are rife on Facebook and Gumtree. Retro gaming is properly popular and people are charging between 100-500 for CRTs these days. I regret not tracking down a really nice Sony Trinitron when I had the chance to do so more cheaply. I have a decent stash of TVs, but none of them are really high quality ones, and it would be nice to have a top-notch 4:3 Trinitron in my stash.

These days, really high quality sets are advertised for hundreds of dollars. There is one online at the moment that I would love to own, but I can't bring myself to spend the money on it, especially during this cost of living crisis where every dollar has to stretch further.

There's a recycle center near me with literally hundreds of CRTs wrapped on pallets, the manager said they were the bane of her job and I am welcome to take whatever I want. Only thing is is that a worker has to be with you and the TVs aren't easily identifiable because they're all wrapped up. I'm sure there's some absolute gold amongst them but it seems like a hassle. I wish I had a big empty shed, I would load up the ute and take them all, at least you could flog off the shit sets easily.

Feels like I'm the only person that has shown interest too, she looked at me funny when I said I'd love to take them all haha.

if they still have yokes maybe

surely some will but scrappers do gut them for copper then put the back on again and take them to ewaste stations to get rid of them so some will be junk

It's usually easy to spot the ones with stripped yokes, as in Brissie, the scrappers just smash open the side of the TV to rip the yoke out. So if there is a TV with a big smash in the back plastic, or the back taken off, it's always missing its yoke.

Haven't seen one on hard waste in years, but the last few I did see, all had a giant smash in the side and the yoke was gone.

Yeah, people are trying it on with prices. If see something good and it was under $50 pick up I'd be interested. I would keep the  same number of sets, give away the lower quality ones.

I've only paid for one CRT in this era, a 15" NIB IBM monitor. I was worried my mame cocktail monitor was dying. It's actually come good again so that one remains in the box. Just turn it on once a year or so. I think I paid 40 or 50 bucks maybe 5 or 6 years ago. They were really surprised anyone would want one!

I went through one locally, maybe 3-400 TVs and ~90% were composite input only and the most of the others with component/svideo didn't work. So while there are heaps you may find there is still a lot of work to find the couple worth the effort, there were three of us for most of the day. I go past our e-waste drop off regularly and there is usually a CRT there. Maybe every few months there is something worth grabbing, testing, taking back if not. I have about 8 29-34 inch CRTs spare this way, nothing is amazing, but they are all that high mid end range back in the day. I would recommend finding the drop off and drive past it every other week.

Yeah, all the ones I keep have multiple inputs. The big 29 inch ones have composite/component/S-video and the small ones usually composite/S-video. I don't keep anything with composite only, unless it is a really small 14 inch. The one I currently use is a Widescreen LG that has component/S-video and HDMI, it does up to 1080i. Sadly, it's a slimline tube, which means corner convergence and geometry is pretty shit. But I kept it because it's the only CRT I have owned that accepts HDMI.

I think being in the city helps. I recently reluctantly offloaded a widescreen Panasonic with RGB SCART and component and digital SD tuner. I couldn’t get rid of it for $50 for ages. Seems retro gaming interest is popular in some areas and non-existent in others. That LG sounds good @namastepatHassle-free for x360 and ps3 onwards.

I did the same thing with a Trinitron with component, it was a fine unit, had it up for $50, changed it to free and nobody wanted it so after a month it went to the recycling yard. I already have a CRT I'll be hanging on to forever as it's 29" and was new old stock still in the box wrapped in plastic, don't need any more CRTs, I just cleaned out my spare room so I try to resist the temptation when I see a freebie 😅

I have a big Panasonic rear projection 4:3 tv with all the bells and whistles. Cost $5000 new and I can't believe it's now useless. This all I came up with, I hate shedding old tech that still works.

We will look back at this time in years to come and kick ourselves for not hanging onto more CRT's.

Everyone is living longer and medicine is getting better everyday, therefore the chances we will be playing games well into our retirement is quite possible.

Yes, I have about 10 tellies of various sizes. Useful for different things and all come out at the same time occasionally for a retro game Day. I have several 34cm which are actually really handy for 8 bit computers. The C64 in particular basically outputs composite from standard. Easier than screwing around with overpriced Commodore monitors. Not that I'd say no to one but they are pricey. Once I have the commie set up again, I'll probably paint one of the 34cm tellies beige 😊

I’m still seeing some crts roadside in Sydney, but not as often as I used to. I almost always pull over to check the size, if it’s 63cm or 59cm I will grab them for tube stock. Most cases they will be 68cm which are a dime a dozen. I ended up buying a set recently for retro gaming.
Agree we definitely need to hang onto these before they disappear

Western Sydney. Someone actually left a 34cm crt out the front of my house this morning. I checked it’s not working but I might hoard it anyway

I know right, I guess the garage full of arcades gave it away 😅

The remote was a bonus! Very thoughtful
