LAI SEGA OutRun Restoration

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I picked up my Holy Grail of arcade memories last September in Melbourne from Retro Replay for $500au not working. I believe it was picked up on a road trip in NSW. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/fccd9944b70a3884c45337bcda181e3c.jpg

It came with 2 sets of PCBs and neither worked. I tried cleaning/reseating/ swapping top and bottom boards but still the same rolling grey screen. One would go into test mode. These have been sent for repair but so far no joy.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/25f3c2a99a177b61d7908e3870835aa0.jpg

After spending a month playing with the boards I decided to move on to stripping down the cabinet

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/ac11703a220f2fef66948d0b6fb3910f.jpg

The cabinet it now totally empty of parts, wire harnesses etc.

This machine had a larger 27" working monitor in it and the screen bezel (Inner and Outer) had been removed and were long gone. It was hard work getting this monitor out. I sold the monitor for $30 and picked up a NOS WG 20".

I've spent a few months stripping down the control mech, making a required parts list and ordering what's required. I'm currently looking out for a OutRun steering wheel and control bezel if anyone has one.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/88d9f4d7ac22c482e27fdca50788c22b.jpg

It was in a pretty shocking state and had probably not been maintained in 30 years!

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/aa9a8f66d9f9a151eb838af24e25514f.jpgsome serious wear to the parts.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/9464f6ffd0cd2596c3719d899b87c275.jpg....and damage. All cogs were cracked which is common to OutRun.

I picked up the parts belowhttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/363cab525a806e6a496582e278325a32.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/96c20efd6478728cc046fa698df49e59.jpg

Here's the before and after of the steering mech restore.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/8c1e8e87035cc2906bd8d606e7853904.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/1c2a6d615fd4b1dffb46d90422c8e0b8.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/bbd0ef98aef6a5ddc58a2b4e2218dcbc.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/517bbc489543f4796e39408e301ec167.jpg

I've now started work on improving the cabinet where some of the laminate has been damaged.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/dd42d3bf5aad51cc695932223e571fed.jpg

Last week I had the artwork adjusted to suite the Australian machine and had it printed for free which was a bonus.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/eac4d6a41d6ff430df4d31b3ffbed000.jpg

This is the power board below. Has anyone got an OutRun to share a picture of their power board. I'm not sure how much has been changed but I can see an old power block on the right.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/0804753f09c5d0ae0adf814eeec6a23d.jpg

Wow looks very clean. What did you use to get rid of all the gunk apart from elbow grease :)

Love the new art work.

I took the mech fully apart and Jet Washed it to start with. This got rid of less gunk than I'd hoped but took a layer off. The rest was done with a green kitchen scour pad and the autosol metal polish. It took a lot of time to do all metal parts.

It's awesome seeing the progress you are making!

I've got a Sega Turbo Outrun sit-down cab that I hope someday to restore. Not in top condition, but a fun game and a great looking cab altogether. It's not exactly the same as yours, but it's similar so I thought I would contribute.

Pic for reference.

I should be able to post actual pics tomorrow. It's about time she got booted up anyway.

One of the hardest parts of the strip down of the cab so far was removing the accelerator pedal. This thing was rusted to the chequered plate. The bolts just would not budge at all. The only way to get it off was to drill the heads off the bolts.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160414/eeb30600da6ed35b66de7ef8a5d24872.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160414/bdc488005718d1dbcb58d906a7831a75.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160414/139b8c61443f9f7b8b6e8125fe3e8d74.jpg

The plate was then removed so the bolts could be knocked out. I'm going to try and clean up the plates but if they don't look great I'll get them re made. A friend in the UK has had a reproduction pedal made which has also been chromed, so I'll be fitting this one later in the project.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160414/c7eaf9c11c3412cf0ec0122b0f1c0a74.jpg

Nice find! Very jealous :) Looking forward to watching this progress. Amazing job so far of reviving those metal parts.

You mentioned you are looking for a new wheel, is the one you have damaged? Either way highway.net.au sell the same kind of wheel as that for $65. I've seen them a few other places too.

The wheel that came with it is a replacement unfortunately, probably a midway or generic like they sell at Highway. Looking for an original but thank you for the info and kind words about the restore.

Would this wheel be suitable? -> http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Out-Runners-Arcade-Dash-Panel-/172169122049?hash=item2816145101:g:UsMAAOSw~oFXEamA

Needs some work, but pics as promised.]

It's all there and complete with the looks of it. This will be a nice project mate. A Japanese import to Australia right?

Had I little time today to try and work on some cabinet imperfections. You can see where the filler is sitting in the laminate indentations. Why would someone also drill 2 holes on each side and fit a larger monitor [emoji33]http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160417/cfa9a6de6c277a6fb514e313e6ab56f1.jpg

Plan next will be to super fine sand and then primer the whole cabinet.

I believe so. I'm not really sure about the meaning behind the sticker and I don't know much about the machine's previous history in general, but I definitely want to keep it as original as possible.

Keeping up with this thread helps a lot and is very inspiring.

Hi Outrun 86, When I was restoring mine. I found this guy on ebay. http://stores.ebay.com.au/bruce1arcade He was really helpful for sourcing parts. Just thought it might help you. Amazing work so far. I know by your passion , this is going to be one great cab.

(pic of my finished cab )

cheers:)

Hey Oldbyte, you did a great job on your restore pal. I remember seeing it on Gumtree a few years back. This was it wasn't it ? http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160417/794c0d4319be8c40ae0c779fc4b7ab3e.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160417/744a890f097ce2078c8bed1a27a868c3.jpg I've collected a lot of reference photos over time lol. Picking up your machine when you offered it to me would of been much easier [emoji1]

Thank you for the link, I've seen his stuff on eBay and he has a lot of OutRun parts for sure. I'm in need of just a few parts now, main items now are a complete CP and a working board ( I have two non working [emoji51]). Did yours have some kind of plastic cover over the silver monitor bezel? I've seen a few Aus OutRun's with this.
