They are just a standard retail optical cable or TOSLink cable used on optical output sound equipment. We swapped heaps over on Daytonas and Sega Rallys. Pay the huge price if you want but they are basically just piece of fishing wire inside a plastic cover and the LED light travels through the inner core.

Nearly unbreakable but if you get a bad bend in the core, (usually from running the machine over it), the light doesn't travel through as good resulting in bad or no signal.

Before you swap over the optical cable, first use a cotton bud in the socket the optical cable goes in and try cleaning it. Dust on the sensor or the source can stop the light getting through as well.

About a 50/50 chance this will fix your problem and well worth trying. ;)
