Elvira & The Party Monsters

Recommended Posts

Thought I would share a recent cabinet restoration with you all as it's not a title we see or hear much of, let alone play.

Mike @mix_vt_cal dropped off the cabinet, headbox and a large box of parts, containing many new things, including cabinet decals, T-moulding, earth braid, shooter rod and housing, internal leg brackets, flipper buttons, legs, glass guides, headbox clamp, etc. The cabinet was already stripped bare by Mike but was in need of some structural attention and many areas filled and sanded.

The headbox decals came off easily with a heat gun and scraper. Structurally, this was very good except for the corners a little damaged.

All screws, bolts, brackets, etc, were polished up or painted, including the head box board tin. Plastic clips washed in hot soapy water.

After the lengthy process of timber repair including new rear protective guides (unknown exact name for them), the cabinet & headbox were sprayed with primer filler, sanded and sprayed with satin black. The inside of the cabinet was sprayed with matt black, as was underneath the machine. Not really necessary but I like the finished look. Mike wanted as many original labels to be saved, where possible.

Unfortunately the decals were slightly too short for the cabinet so I had to do my best. I usually trim the decals 2-3mm in from the edge of the timber, but had to have a bigger margin on this one. I have since been told that decals can actually shrink over time depending on their storage and temperature, etc. Still turned out well and I was happy with the result.

Lock down bar bracket cleaned up with wire brush to remove rust, then primed and sprayed before new stickers applied. Also added the soft part of the velcro across the top at the front, to stop the playfield glass from being scratched over time. Speaker panel and playfield timber trim sanded and sprayed black, as was the playfield backboard with new decal. Speaker grill cleaned well and re-sprayed (masking up the ‘Bally’ name was a bitch). Washed the cab looms and small repair of a connector arranged - thanks to Mark C.

New side rails and glass on their way I believe, as well as lock down bar, coin door and a few small items that wasn't in the original box I got from Mile. Boards were also serviced by Ken I believe, and ready to go back in.

Clear coated playfield (that looks simply stunning) awaiting full top and bottom population and this machine I cannot wait to play.

This title was next to Mousin’ Around in a cafe in Lygon St, Carlton back in 89-90 and we played them heaps. So that’s the last time I’ve played one of these.

Mike will no doubt add some updates & pics, so really looking forward to seeing this one.

Thanks Mike for the opportunity to restore a 30yr old title that means a lot to me.

Hey all,

Yep, this was was bought by me as a project pin back in 2014.

i already own a nice Scared Stiff and the missus and I have been Elvira fans since the old B grade movie hosting days that were on TV in the 80’s.

Thinking about it, this pin is a real AA community effort.

Was bought from @bretty in SA

Playfield restored by @Savage

New ramps and plastics from Greg at RTBB (RIP) :cry

Boards repaired and serviced by Ken @Skybeaux

New transformer, couple of wiring loom repairs and various bits via @markc from PSPA (with more to come no doubt.....)

Jeff @Railways is trying to hunt me down a set of System 11 rails

And of course, the amazing job that @Glenn70 has done on the cabinet.

i picked this up on Anzac Day, and a friend dropped in today to view the progress of the project. She says I need to pull the finger out!

Glenn @Glenn70 also did the playfield backboard, and the playfield side pieces.

After searching worldwide, I managed to pick up a new decal from Best of Pinball in Germany a few years back.

Here’s a few pics he sent me of the process. Top work as always. Thanks Glenn!

Yes, that back board came up really well. I realise no-one will ever see the back of it, but for an extra 10 mins in sanding and painting, I just couldn't not do it. I used the wet method for the decal on the front of this small piece as getting it to line up took some time. I don't know what it is with these reprinted decals, but they are NEVER the same as the original.

Coin door is coming along.

Was too cold to paint on the weekend, so did some prep work, cleaning and detail work.

It’s often the little touches that make a pin stand out.

Yep, agree. Love the coin slot artwork. That coin door will come up nice when painted.

RDO from work today, so made some progress while it was warm.

Pics have loaded out of order, but you get the gist.

Also, some nice shiny rails arrived from @Railways Jeff. Tempted to unwrap them, but I’ll wait.

That coin door has really come up like new. Nice work. So glad to see you working on this. Go on, put the side rails on. I cut out the holes for them and earth braid all looped on the inside to connect to the small bolt at the front of the rails. Keep the updates and pics coming mate.

And, yes, 'Elvira 3' I am looking forward to.

Just a thought Mike but please unwrap them and offer them up to the cab before fitment sooner than later please. I'm pretty sure they are right but!!

Another tip is when you do install them do not over tighten the earth bolt near the lockdown bar as with this finish it will show a concave. Gentle is better:lol

OK Jeff, sounds like a job for tomorrow. I held them against the cab while wrapped and seems to be the correct length.

Coin door finished and and on @Glenn70.

Any hints for aligning the door in its frame? it’s rubbing on the bottom right corner. I tried giving it a lift but that just loosened the hinge. :redface

@Railways Jeff - definitely the correct rails. Was going to install but have a set of clear protectors that go under the flipper buttons to go on first. Do you think i can find them anywhere? :unsure

To lift the door and stop it rubbing you’ll need to remove it from the frame. Tap the hinge down with a block of wood as the hinge will have stretched.

Yep, try this for sure. What's rubbing? The coin door itself on the frame or the coin door frame when it was interred into the cab? Sometimes the door itself may require some manipulation and bending back of the inside lip with pliers or similar. I've had to do this a number of times.

Great transformation Glenn @Glenn70. It's always nice to see and hear about your projects.

Congrats Mike @mix_vt_cal. I'm sure you're very happy with how it's come along and seeing some momentum is always a great motivator.

Thanks heaps Joe. I enjoyed this one.

  • 2 weeks later...

Earlier in the week cleaned up the glass and translight.

Translight was pretty dirty.

Also has some damage in a corner.

Warm water a soft cloth and some velvet soap will removal all the brown stain on the back of the translite. Give it a try, I've done it on countless translites and they always come up looking white and clean. Wet the cloth in warm water, squeeze it out gently and wipe the surface of the translite to remove any loose dirt and make the surface damp. Rinse the cloth in the water again, squeeze enough water out so that when you run the soap over the surface it makes a light lather on the cloth. Gently run the soap cloth across the surface of the translite and the grime will disappear. Edited by Pinballer
