A summary of what’s been done is as follows:

Modding:

  • Seb’s switchless code implemented
  • All functionality is driven by the reset button - tap once to reset, press and hold/release until the LED blinks once to change between 50/60hz output, press and hold until the colours cycle to reset the console and load the default region settings to match
  • LED settings: Red = PAL, Orange = US, Green = Japanese
  • Pin 79 of IC14 tapped for 50/60hz switching for maximum compatibility
  • The PIC is socket-mounted on a custom PCB near the CD-ROM ribbon cable. This allows for the PIC to be removed and reprogrammed if you go for a BIOS replacement in the future to retain 50/60hz switching only
  • Custom PCB uses a header + socket so you can easily disconnect cables from the PCB to disassemble the console. I’ve added in an extra +5v output to the header/socket if you need to tap +5v for an SD card solution or a modchip in the future to save running another +5v cable from the power
  • Speaking of power, +5v and GND are tapped closer to the PCB so you can remove or replace the PSU as required
  • PCB is mounted on plastic spacers and can be easily removed if required. It’s bolted both top/bottom - I’ve used flathead screws under the shielding which means no impact to components under the shielding. Placement of the PCB means video CD cards can still be inserted as well.
  • I’m no Voultar, but I’ve done my best to keep the cabling tidy - see the images for the cabling near the mod PCB (I’ve allowed enough slack to comfortably remove the socket without straining any components), hot glue’s only been used sparingly to keep the cables on the PCB tidy (including securing some relief for the 50/60hz mod)
  • As this is an NTSC console, if you’re using composite/s-video to push it into 50hz you’ll need a TV that can happily marry NTSC3.56 colour with a 50hz refresh rate (oddly enough my Hitachi CRT is fine with this!) or run it in RGB (how I normally run my consoles - remember the pinout for Japanese AV ports is different to PAL for SCART cables RE +5v outputs)
  • PAL, US, Japanese games tested with no issues

Console stuff:

  • Model RG-JX2
  • The console is in great condition physically - see the photos
  • PCB is a 1995 VA SG revision
  • Has the V-Saturn boot sequence instead of the usual Japanese boot sequence
  • Cartridge port polished up and tested on my official carts (1mb, 4mb, backup), all working well but your mileage may vary depending on the state of your gear, the Saturn’s picky with carts. I haven’t tested with a PAR - don’t like using them these days now I have an assortment of official carts
  • Lens cleaned
  • Loose dust removed from PCB and mechanisms
  • New CR2032 battery fitted, memory cleared, time/date set and English language activated in the BIOS settings
  • Composite AV cable RCA plugs polished and cleaned (previously had some build-up on them). The outer sheath of the video RCA plug was a little warped but I’ve moulded it back into shape. It’s not perfect, but worked great in testing
  • Official Victor Sega Saturn controller. The connector pins have been polished up as it wasn’t connecting nicely, but works great now

With the games, Sega Rally’s in good shape but the cases on the others are a little rough (damaged hinges mostly). Discs are in good order though, so they’ll play fine.

Pickup’s fine for locals (Adelaide, western suburbs), happy to post at cost.
