Question
BIG Trev
Some of you may be aware that I was asked to repair a few of the arcade machines that came out of Level Up in Tamworth when it closed its doors. I've mentioned a few of the things I've been doing for a local boarding school but this one is for a local truck repair company.
The guy bought it for his son but he didn't want it???
The machine booted up ok but the controls weren't working properly or at all.
The throttle was easy as it was just a loose screw on the potentiometer shaft and was easily fixed but the joystick was giving weird readings.
After removing it from the machine and measuring the pots with my multimeter I realised the pots were both knackered. This machine has had over 140,000 games so it's understandable.
The wiper on one pot had worn right through and broken off, the other was partly worn through and wasn't reading correctly. I think you can see the damage in the pics
I learnt a bit (not everything) about the numbering on the back of the pots.
The 25 is the outside diameter of the can.
The 20 is the total lenth of the shaft from the black case.
The F at the end denotes a flat on the shaft. I couldn't get these so I ordered one with an S at the end which stands for slotted and ground them down, making sure the flat is in the correct position on the shaft.
The 502 means 5, 0 and two more zeros in ohms so they're 5k or 5000 ohms.
There was also a broken wire on the shaker motor that's housed in the grip so I added an extension wire and joined it back up. I put a link in so it was the same length as the green wire and there wasn't any additional stress on the red one.
I had to replace the rubber boot too and instead of trying to find an original part I used a CV boot off a car and cut it down.
It all looks ok to go back in, fingers crossed I put the pots back in the right places. I took photos of everything else.[emoji16]
