How to upgrade the Data East speakers in my Jurassic Park ?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I have bought kits from 'pinball pro' in the past, but with the Australia dollar what it is and increased shipping costs it is now A$345 to get a speaker kit for my Jurassic Park delivered to me :089:

I also checked out flipper fidelity kits and they are about the same price :cry

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can upgrade my Jurassic Park speakers for a reasonable price?

Cheers

What size speakers are in there standard?

Have never done a Data East before but with Williams/Bally you can use car speakers for the backbox, use a crossover for the sub and an L-pad for volume adjustment on the backbox to get a better balance between bass and mid/treble.

I believe that Data East is already two channels so you probably only need an L-pad and no crossover.

These are good for the backbox but you may need to go for a 4" one one side due to the mounting pegs on the plastic panel (WMS is timber so you can drill it out)

These are good for the sub:

Thanks for the links. Yes Data East is stereo (2 channel). I'm not sure how to wire in the L-pad you mentioned ?

Yeah standard size speakers :)

There's a guy on Pinside doing RasPiSound which is a homebrew alternative to Pinsound. I've bought one for my JP but haven't gotten around to installing it. It's still a project but might be worth a look

Thanks but I don't want to change the music or sounds, I like the original sound programming, just want better speakers :)

Thanks for the info, but is there no ebay seller in Aust/China that has a suitable product? the postage kills this...

Can I just buy some speakers locally?

Even with the killer postage they are still way cheaper than a pinball pro setup for comparable sound.

You can buy locally, but unfortunately there is little choice when it comes to 5.25" speakers and 6.5" subs in Aus.

These ones are available at Bursons, for slightly cheaper than the Boss ones but aren't quite as good.

4" speakers are readily available at Supercheap, Autobarn etc

Hi Boots

I have modified one of the diagrams in your links because they are for bally/Williams set up.

Would you mind having a look at my picture and telling me if this looks correct or make suggestions please :unsure

I guess the L-pad only increases or decreases the volume of the backbox speakers and the woofer gets adjusted by the pinball machines master volume control?

Thanks

You actually want an 8ohm l-pad as the speakers are wired in series

Have a look here:

Looks good to me

Yeah that's right, the L-pad only affects the backbox speakers to get a good balance between bass and mid/treble

I think I have made rookie error. I didn't unplug the backbox speaker from the sound board before unsoldering the wires and soldering on one of the new speakers . Now the machine sounds are not all there, and sounds a little scrambled ? Could I have blown up the sound chip/s or something more difficult to fix? My soldering was pretty quick.

I've put the factory speaker back in and it still sounds wierd ?

You didn't do any of this with the pinny on I hope? If so, then soldering with an earthed soldering could blow the output stage of the audio board. this of course is a bad thing.

No the pin was not turned on. But the speaker wires were still connected to the audio board during my quick soldering.

@Boots you are a legend :023:

All fixed...I had accidentally pulled a ribbon cable a little bit out. Fiddled a bit with all the ribbon cables and problem solved :041:
