Stoner candy machine restoration

Recommended Posts

Imported this machine from the USA I was lucky for it to hitch a ride in a container heading to Canberra.

It's a Stoner 8 pull with gum vendor its serial number shows it is a 1950s model.

Candy bars are placed on each shelf with every 5th shelf red to help the vendor easily count how many bars have been sold.

This particular model comes with a gum vendor with 4 merchandise chutes that can hold four different varieties of gum or mints.

Different flavours are selected by turning the selector knob until the gum/mint that you want shows in the window.

This model also has a coin changer mechanism which will give a nickel in change when a dime is inserted.

Hope you enjoy the restoration I'm sure I'll need some help or advice along the way.20181222_193443.thumb.jpg.887cea5a932f755eda08843051b08c36.jpg20181222_140019.thumb.jpg.ba7da363cf2da8625c1c26a6337a3839.jpg20181226_140112.thumb.jpg.7ccdbce5d0800137370784b082bc82c3.jpg

After advice from a few powder coaters I had most of the internals chemically cleaned to remove the paint and then powder coated.

Advised against blasting as heat could warp some of the thinner parts.20190225_182929.thumb.jpg.364ae1ff73648447231f88c71b46ede5.jpg20190225_143642.thumb.jpg.942779dc6ce98935952ac10b91c6d080.jpg20190225_193812.thumb.jpg.15bc5e711645b27d9478384d2487cadd.jpg20190123_131556.thumb.jpg.6d321604dc6ba8a0a1755923f9a02bf5.jpg

yer thats good advice, Definitely would have been a bad idea blasting that.

It doesn't look rusty in the picture so chem stripping made a tonne of sense

you gonna use Enamel hammer-tone for the main body? Might look a bit nicer and closer to original than Power coat on the outside IMO

The green Enamel hamertone is getting hard to find In Australia, it used tobe every where but allot of Brands have deleted the colour from their range.

I had a bit of trouble finding some for my restorations, But I did find some that was sitting on a shelf in a paint store for a few years, so if you get stuck I do have a few Liters

Or are you doing a hotrod?

Jason, I'm not looking at going original colour with the main body, I'm looking at going 2pac automotive paint.

Concentrating on reassembly of the rack whilst I can still sort of remember how.

Not sure what you mean by hotrodding, looking at a non original colour, metallic?

Candy decals etc.

Yer that would be hotrodded.

Allot of us resto guys call that sort of resto hotrodded,

When going more fancy paint scheme than original, chrome, pinstripes and things like that, Doing a bit of a custom spin on the original design as being hotrodded, much like the car.

Allot of these stoner machines especially in the states get hotrodded, they have the right shape for it so they are popular for that reason.

All 4 gum merchandise chutes installed an extra couple of arms would have come in handy installing them.

Selector knob restored best I could, not perfect but passable.

Gum selector wheel sprayed and numbers painted on (thanks Jason for the advice)20190327_174205.thumb.jpg.676161e4b498b036d97b323444bcf3f5.jpg20190130_141731.thumb.jpg.0b4932a686591cf3b2ae21a9e9b21012.jpg20190326_111556.thumb.jpg.caab3fcd8c292a57e9397ad8d94b1c17.jpg

Stoner candy machine restoration

Had a few issues with the gum vendor not working correctly, merchandise 2 was the only chute that worked correctly.

Found that the ejector drive arms were bent, as merchandise chute number 2 worked correctly I had a reference to bend the other 3 arms.

All 4 merchandise chutes and linkages were removed and arms bent back into shape.

Now awaiting zinc plating to continue assembly.

Will have to look at painting the candy machine shortly, want to have it painted in 2pac car paint. Anyone near the Sutherland shire that wants to give me a price let me know.

  • 1 year later...

Finally getting back to finishing this project, due to concerns with warping due to heat generated when grit/soda blasting I ended up having the cabinet chemically stripped of paint.

Very impressed with the result the bottom of the stand had rust pitting prior to stripping.

Hopefully in the next few weeks paint will be completed.
