Coil strength on an XFiles

Jamie

Question

I have a 23-900 coil used in a Xfiles super vertical up kicker that is supposed to have a 23-800. Problem is that it occasionally fires the ball up super hard. Does the 23-900 have less or more strength than the 23-800 and does the brand type make a difference? For what I’ve read the 23-900 has more winding and therefor more resistance and less powerful. If that’s the case what would cause this to happen the boards are checked and ok.Thanks if anyone has anything to advise here.

An 800 coil will have more strength than a 900 providing they are both 23 gauge which in your case they are. To make it a 23-800 coil simply unwind 100 turns cut and resolder the wire back on. If the coil fires harder occasionally, there may be a short in the coil's winding which is going to do exactly like taking wires out as some of the windings are being bypassed.

I honestly suspect your VUK isn't locating the ball perfectly center every time and that will give the appearance the coil has fired weak but when it is perfectly in line, the ball fires perfectly straight and hard.

You could also have a cracked solder joint in the connector to the driver board or a bad solder joint on the coil itself.
