Sega Universal Upright conversion

Sorry, i misunderstood... Emulate the system.. I thought emulate the jvs using an original Naomi board.

My 15khz setups have Naomi emulated...

For once, I'm going for an original hardware setup :)

Had a look last night, and since they have a policy of using FedEx for arcade parts, it ends up costing quite a bit for shipping..

I got a quote @ 1kg (probably not that heavy) and it was going to cost over 170 AUD to ship... That's just shipping :(

I'll probably get the one on ebay atm..

Replaced the speakers that didn't work with theze JVCs (not earth shattering, but they do a great jobl.

837681f22f4be8740a2797970755dcd0.jpg

Started with the control panel wiring. I've done one player, making my way to the second player and then the kick harness.

64cc428462aec486e3923a58a2e7747f.jpg

Popped over to bunnings to get a new T18 tube with the hope the ballast still works and the tube not blow up since it's wired for 110v

39c9f14d594393c07fd0169a2c05bed9.jpg

Turned her all on, and voila!! The marquee from the clone fits perfectly and I didn't blow anything up! (after a quick google, I realised fluro tubes aren't actually rated for voltage, it's only the input voltage for the ballast)

A quick video of it all in action with the sound on!

Once the cp is all wired, it's just a matter of finishing the paint work on a few bits, speaker grills, wiring back plate then procuring a net dimm, multi bios an zero key.

The end is so close! Yet still so far! :) :)

Finalising the last bits and pieces to paint that I've been delaying (the back power plate, back plate and panel cover).

The back plate the way it was as I got it...

Giving it a good sand and a brush down of rust convert solution

Not much else I could really do on the cab front so I decided to clean the Naomi...

She was quite dirty but nothing too bad..

A quick dismantle..

And we see about 20 years worth of dust! Absolute filth!

Magic erasers are the best thing created for cleaning! This is the result after a good 15 mins of cleaning.

Next up, I got shipment of my net dimm!! Yay!

c15705bf5f48bfe551a14958d84f0315.jpg

Unfortunately, I have no idea if it works properly as I've tried two different Naomi boards and I still get the same as error.

91866c9266495ba67b8428e3a22d6055.jpg

I believe my bios is way out of date and that it's not even compatible with the net dimm! (I've got EPR-D 21580)

I'm hoping the multi bios comes in my possession sometime early next week to give the net boot a good test! Fingers crossed that the net dimm works as expected.

In the meantime, I'm trying to grab all the stuff I need for my pi... I think my internet connection is as old as the Naomi with my super fast!l 261KB/s speed! :D :D

8b76f7acd84b9826fdcaa289619283dd.jpg

Will need to make a trip to get some satin black spray paint for the speaker grills.

Until next update....

So I got delivery of the final pieces to the puzzle today!

A raspberry pi 3 and the Multibios and zero key!

2767eed3af20175df9fc4122b2763e9e.jpg

After changing the bios, the error 01 code immediately disappeared and got the network system splash screen - very good sign!

9ceb3ab91552f49687b3f538bcd9671f.jpg

Took me about 5 minutes to figure out after "setting" the IP address, I needed to reboot the system for me to successfully ping the device from my computer.

e6b47f0bedd8ed2e9ccc1910fc004816.jpg

Did a transfer of mvc2 as a quick test..

472cd1d1b3c114f50e2690e61bab56cf.jpg

The following screens started appearing

a1199863f4814ad934a6af283fce77b3.jpg

Unfortunately upon loading, I got this screen

27b0de5c237a85acb650a5e50398fa04.jpg

Took me another 5 or so mins to figure out that I needed to change the machine type from 1 player to 2 player.

f54578cfff9fe5cbeb2fbeea1fbd8f6c.jpg

Once that setting was changed....

Voila!!

cfd979c99da0633054f982c4f9655a65.jpg

Next to fix and properly test the raspberry pi loader via a Web browser (either from my phone, tablet or anything)

c2a58eb7d3ea3c26faf3a74c991a2cfd.jpg

It's really just finishing up the paint work, install the pieces, tidy up the wiring and order some repro artwork and this project can be signed off!

Almost there!

And... The restoration has taken another dive! :(

As I was trying to sort out the piforce, I noticed the image go funny - it became large and then the image pinch and became like an hour glass (not that bad, but concaved)

Shortly after when the Naomi rebooted, the signal wasn't present (but the sound was) and it sound like the monitor was trying to turn on.

And then the smell.... There was an electrical smell that was very present in the air..

Back to square 1 looking for a 31khz monitor. I'll disassemble the chassis and try and find some sort of identifier to see if I can get a replacement as I know Jomac doesn't really fix 31khz chassis.

Hopefully I can also find the "burnt" section and see what the damage is.

I'd love to know how this happened, the monitor and chassis was secured, no wires touched (that I could tell anyway) and the input voltage was coming out of the transformer - if it was going to fail due to incorrect input voltage, I would've thought this would have occurred earlier.

Hey mate, this sucks :( Where did you find the monitor in the first place? Tracking down a 31khz must have been difficult. I notice it looks like a pure flat tube, is the chassis a Wei-ya? The chassis I have in my Atomiswave cab is a Wei-ya 3129 and it gets such a good image, bloody perfect. I was really surprised, as there is always so much hate directed at Wei-Ya chassis.

Joey may fix some 31khz chassis, it does depend. It would be worth shooting him a message at the very least and you might get lucky.

Highway had 360 upright cabinets that looked like Sega Universal clones - I took the punt and worked out for the Marqee, bezel and monitor - unfortunately the monitor died :(

Yes, it's a pure flat tube and the image I was getting from it was very very nice. I have no idea what the chassis is, I think it's a Wei-ya, but not sure what model as there is no identifier anywhere. I'll post some pics.

I'll definitely hit Joey up

Not sure what that is, it's definitely not a Wei-Ya 3129, as it looks quite different to mine.

Probably worth contacting Highway to find out if they know more about the make and model. Or just send Joey the pictures, he will likely know what it is.

Well the good news is Jomac said to send over the chassis and he'll have a look over and hopefully get it to a working state!

Fingers crossed!

Last night, I decided to do some cable management on the Piforce-Web setup...

Here's the final product

2b058b1a12e58686a1b7cc8a2f1eea5f.jpg

Granted I cheated a bit with using the space on the risers, I still think she looks good! :)

697f6bb110cf3141fee37409af3473cd.jpg

Used an old micro usb cable that I stripped, crimped some terminals on a JST connector to plug direct to CN12 of the Naomi board (pin 1 is 5v and pin 4 is gnd).

This way, when the system turns on, the pi turns on.

Absolutely cannot fault Jomac!

The chassis was sent on Thursday, he received it around midday, worked on it, replaced the flyback and did a service on the chassis, sent it off that evening!

I received the chassis back late this afternoon and the results are very good!! :)

Joey sent the flyback back to show where it exploded

I decided to install the monitor with the sega frame...

Silly me made a lot of assumptions.. The chassis had nowhere near the amount of clearance required. Since I still wanted the sega frame, I just grabbed some spare chipboard and used it to mount the chassis :)

5a6680bb3a4dadbbe1e6ed7834c2d842.jpg

So after triple checking the wiring... It was finally time to give her a test!

Voila!

She's alive and actually looks better than what it did.

I'm so glad that Jomac was able to fix this 31khz chassis, yes it's a weiya Chinese chassis but I'm ok with that.

Really not looking forward to the day Jomac retires as he will leave a massive void in the arcade community here in Australia. Hopefully he has an apprentice or something :)

I decided to put the back, bezel and cp all together just for the hell of it... The cab is really looking very close to completion!

28730e5c9a44491474b2d8f957f0429b.jpg

Here's a few closer shots of the Naomi

c86e870cc468f7ff4d4119983d6652cc.jpg

Lastly, the speak grills have been painted satin black, but didn't realise I haven't got a glue gun, so I won't be able to fit it back to the bezel until I get a glue gun.

The decision for a marquee is proving to be a difficult one... 90% of the game played on this cab will be MVC2, so it only makes sense to get a MVC2 marquee, but at the same time, one of the biggest reasons I wanted the marquee of this cab is for the blast city style topper... Decisions, decisions decisions!

  • 3 weeks later...

No major work on the Naomi these past few weeks but I finally started painting the last few bits..

18724e6c227f6be438ad363c0b0c3203.jpg

8b3e574f6e4d9d38ec96c1919600a9b5.jpg

Cabinet is completely operational now, it's just these last metal panels!

Outside of the Naomi, I've been working on the Naomi clone that was specifically purchased for "spare parts" (marquee, bezel and tube/chassis).

Rather than wasting it, I ended up cutting her down, install my spare MS9 and tube to make it a single player 360 cave shmups cab (I really would love cave sh3 pcbs, but I'm just not prepared to pay over 3k for them :))

Wired up a jamma harness to the clone cab which allowed me to connect the UVC to the cab..

5806ac3dace0f33b5feb6991a4c273e7.jpg

Plugged in a DC to get the test suite and calibrated as best as I could

62c0c176c423d7ba12c24a84415b70ff.jpg

Installed the monitor to the cab and she's ready to go!

0473b4a5744294bee1b1408fc9ad880d.jpg

Unfortunately, the cp will need a replacement as it's quite hacked up to so it fit that crazy cp from highway

A normal Sega CP installed on the cab..

36e5390bad78f15cf550d77c93d6bafd.jpg

The gap is way too big to fit properly

eaaafdc08bad2346dd7c4e2a856dff57.jpg

Just for sh*ts and giggles, I lined them all up to see how it'd look..

Nothing too special.. (that clone cp is soooooo bad!!!)

aac9cb3379d1f062c96c06766cde00f6.jpg

And with the lights turned off and the cabs turned on, it's a wonderful sight!!!

43764e3fbdd6820c309d366c647e4881.jpg

Will hit noodleshirt and sellsells2000 for some artwork, will hit rs components up for some bits and bobs to wire up the cp the same way as the astro city..

The end is so close!! I might actually play a couple of games!

Final parts are slowly coming!

Today I got shipment from noodleshirt which contained the backlit marquee and instruction space.

Stuck the dollar coin insert and voila! The CP is as good as I could get.

cb810531d77b1708cc3837ba71f777f1.jpg

Marquee art (went with SF2, but I'll get the marvel one too eventually)

5feb31fa675c8723c472195071f960f9.jpg

Unfortunately underlit is nowhere near as nice ad backlit like it is on the blast city... I might look into putting some LEDs at the back and see if I can make use of the backlit film marquee

33830067ad7762a602397c7e4d30fbfe.jpg

Waiting for the paint to dry on the last metal panels and also my repro "Naomi" bubble sticker to go on the font of the monitor shroud.

Once that's done, I believe the project cab will officially be completed!
