Street Fighter 2 Different Versions...

Recommended Posts

Ok so I am still obsessed with this game since first playing it as a 10 year old.

My question is ...there are so many different versions of it has anyone fully documented the differences between each one. I can't find any lists online .

I have no interest in anything after Hyper Fighting. Any insight on the ones below would be great... This list came from a rom site.

Maybe collectively we could get a little description going on all the different types by adding some notes... I am fairly familiar with rainbow, red wave etc but I haven't been able to work my way through all the numbered ones like 910214, 910206 ..what do those numbers even mean??

That is the date 910214 is 14th Feb 91

I always wondered what these numbers on Capcom games meant..... the answer is simpler than I thought! [emoji106]

Ok so the dated versions are the exact same game just with a date after it? Or are there actual differences to the gameplay?

Where it is a different date on a territory release, it is usually some sort of code change/bug fix. If you get bored you can do a ROM comparison and see which ROMS have changed (usually program roms only).

These hacked versions are so much fun. I was playing one the other day on Pandora 5 and one of them had a dragon punch which throws like 10 fireballs at the same time . I couldnt stop laughing.

I used to play a hacked champion edition / rainbow in the mid 90s. Loved it so much I ended up buying the PCB & cabinet from the arcade back in 1999 and still have it today.

Its a genuine CPS1 boardset, but with the modified 21 22 23 rom chips in place of the original champion edition chips.

My one plays almost identical to the 'YYC' variant which you have in your above list.

Start button to change players as most hacks do, fireballs which bounce up and down like a zig zag, dragon punches which go horizontal across the screen, hurricane kicks which just keep going and going. All moves can be done in the air as well.

Makes me wonder how so many of them ended up in arcades in Australia. Seems like most hacks came from Taiwan. Did operators feel like introducing something fun and new and change their champion PCB chips with the hacked chips?

Are you missing the hacks in the list? The sf2rb.zip is the Rainbow Edition mame rom, and there's Red Wave as well, and quite a few others. Google both of those and you'll find there are descriptions and blog posts of people talking about the hacked versions.

No, i know which one are hacks.. I was just hoping somewhere there was a list with notes on each different one. For example how rainbow 1 set is different to rainbow 2 set and how thats different to red wave etc etc .

Not sure if you saw but 1989 in Sydney have an older still version of World Warrior that isn't dumped in MAME. I have looked at the board and it seems legit to me, still has all it's original Capcom eproms.

I've played it quite a bit and I've played other versions of World Warrior a lot.

Zangief is pretty bullshit in that version (910204 ETC) and they definitely nerfed nerfed him in 910214 onwards.

I have a few different WW revisions that are original. The one that I play the most (which I'll dig up the revision date for later- my screen doesn't turn on fast enough to see the date often enough) has the usual Guile glitches but also has the ridiculous E Honda flying heavy kick damage glitch and a glitch that allows Honda to recover and perform his torpedo attack without holding back for the usual time.

There was another thread on here about a year ago if you look through the arcade thread that had a lot of good info in it:
