Another Pong Cab Scratch Build

Recommended Posts

I've had a request to build another Pong cabinet so I thought I'd take you all along for the ride.

Previous build thread here:

https://www.aussiearcade.com/showthread.php/91122-Atari-Pong-Scratch-Build

This one will use a reproduction discrete logic (TTL) PCB based off the original Pong schematic and will play exactly the same as the original.

I redrew the plans using Design Spark Mechanical and will tweak them as I go so I'll end up with an accurate set of drawings for future builds.

The first thing to do was make up a template for the side profile.

The first panel was rough cut and flush trimmed around the template, it was then used as a template to flush trim the second panel, this way they are both identical.

I have the artwork left over from the last Pong build.

I also got a second control panel overlay done when I built the first cab which has saved a bit of time.

Trying to find the correct knobs that match the original cab is a major pain, these are the closest I can find.

I've ordered a pair though Aliexpress but the cab will probably be completed before they arrive.

This is what the originals looked like.

I'll try to get the rest of the woodgrain panels cut tomorrow and if possible the remainder of the panels as well.

All panels except for the top have been cut, everything except for the two woodgrain panels at the front were cut from a single sheet of 2400mmx600mmx16mm sheet at Bunnings.

The base was cut from a single length of 90mmx35mmx3m structural pine.

Seeing as this is a replica I thought it would be cool to add a serial number plate and backdoor sheet for it.

This is build number two so it gets serial number AA-002.

The backdoor sheet is the same as the original just knocked up in Word.

Awesome work! I would love a pong cab. How much do you estimate the entire build will cost and will you be releasing full plans etc??

I'm happy to share the plans and I can export them from Design Spark into .dxf format for CNC cutting but they will have to be checked and possibly edited to close shapes etc before being ready for CNC.

The woodgrain panels are probably the most expensive and vary depending on how much you buy, what you use (ply or MDF) and who you get it off.

It would cost between $500-$1000, it also depends on whether you use a stainless control panel, CNC cut panels, original game board or Pong Console and B&W TV etc.

I spent $100 at Bunnings today for the wood and hardware.

2400x600x16 MDF

90x35x3M Structural Pine

3/8" Leg levelers (4)

3/8" T-nuts (4)

30x30x1.5 Aluminium Angle x 2

8G-15mm Button head screws (Pk100) x 2

8G-32mm Button head screws (Pk100)

8G-50mm Countersunk screws (Pk50)

Edit: I just realised I have these plans but can't open .dwg files at the moment, a couple of PDFs there as well...

I made a bit more progress on the cab today.

Originally I was going to cover the control panel and bezel with yellow vinyl and use yellow paint underneath as a base but I think the paint is a closer match to the original so I just need to give the control panel one more coat and the bezel another two coats.

The paint used is Dulux Duramax Dandelion Yellow.

Mate, spectacular work.!

Need to find a nice word grain laminate to do a Midway Cabaret build.. Sadly it looks like the best place will be overseas.. More variety. Somone used one on a ICB restore and it looked real close to the original. Can't bring myself to doing vinyl..

Yeah it's very hard to find in small quantities, especially if you want specific finish/pattern. Most places want to sell you a 3m panel which is only worth it if you're doing a few cabs.

This is one option and they have a branch in Victoria.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm in the process of trying to source some more woodgrain panels.

This build used Milano Walnut from Laminex.

Just thought I'd share in case someone wants to use it for a build.

Through Laminex Australia here in Brisbane they are $301 for a 2400mm x 1200mm x 16mm sheet which is enough to do a complete cab.
