Double Dragon USA Scratch Build

Recommended Posts

G'Day All

So I have been wanting to scratch build a cab for ages and finally started 3 weeks ago.

I love checking out restore/ built threads here and have gained inspiration and ideas from many AAers

I was planning to build another cab that I thought would be an easier design but for numerous reasons I settled on this.

The game that got me hooked on arcade back in the day... DOUBLE DRAGON

I couldn't find any plans so have used images and videos for reference and am guestimating it as I go. So far so good:unsure

Decided on MDF as when I fk up will be a cheap mistake. Big ruler and protractor to work out angles from reference photos.

Pretty happy I got both sides cut 1st day. Added trim on LHS but got too dark to continue. Lucky the Wife and Kid were out for the night so moved inside:D

A few days later...

Bracing for the front sections.

dd7.thumb.jpg.d169bcc2c1d9782b8cb3bf670af75d0e.jpg

Probably overdone but the 1st time I have used builders bog.

dd8.thumb.jpg.e023ff51007b4664585e94d3dffadd31.jpg

Tried to match the handles and ventilation to reference pics

Got a bit inpatient and put a few coats of black on the back. Not done obviously

I have done a bit more today however they are boring images of parts made with the router so will update soon!

Thanks Mate. I love your builds. Gonna borrow your paint sand technique used on your donkey Kong.

Quick Update

Got a bit more done over the weekend. The bezel art is a 'sticker' that will be applied to a piece of masonite cut to size and painted black.

I thought this was the best option for strength instead of the originals cardboard and as I wanted to have glass in front as per the original cab.

ddd1.thumb.jpg.cfdc6199380e625835f5944771bc26ab.jpg

So still undecided on the base?

Please feel free to reply with your thoughts on the matter!

So I built a frame out of hardwood for the cab to sit on. I was planning to mount some castors on the back. This was my initial idea and the positives as I see it are

1 Added strength to the cab and keep the back and bases integrity

2 Castors Readily available/ high load capacity

3 Increase in playing height. (This would be ideal for me as I am 6.3)

4 Easier to move cab as there is something to hold on too.

Alternative is too keep it original and use castors from arcade shop but then all the positives of the 1st option are lost and the opposite applys.

All to made a repro as close to original as I can:unsure

What do you think?

Regardless the cab is mostly together.

Went to a major glass supplier and apparently there machines don't have the ability to cut glass to mm only cm.

WTF?

Al's Plastics fixed me up with some quality plexi instead.

Sounds good mate, I just managed to pick up the original joysticks (one red and one blue) with the leaf switches, as well as all three dd pcbs, I'm just about to have the first dd pcb delivered from the US, the guy has two more for sale but non working so if you are after one let me know and I can have him send one out with mine.

Nice work on the cabinet build mate, I've been using Al's Plastics for years and he always looks after you, good pricing and will cut while you wait.

For future reference Australia Glass can cut to the mm and toughen the glass as well.

Sunday update time.

Majority of painting done... Or so I thought:cry

Put the lower drawer in and the front has warped and is now not flush:realmad:

20180617_172454_resized.thumb.jpg.fcb7c2986abb07caa2f80de85cdfc12c.jpg

Hard to see in the photo. Gonna have to replace/ rebuild.

Lessons learned this week

1 Don't leave MDF out overnight as the condensation will warp it

2 Painting is a chore even for something you love

3 Next build all screws will be from inside as bog sanding is an unnecessary pain in the a## to get right

Haha yes painting is hard work, my dk cab I probably put in 30hrs, to think of it painting is easy, it's the sanding that kills. And yes screws on the inside, my first project I had to bog and sand for no reason lol

Yep iborg is correct. Gamedude is where I got it. I believe he only had a few left. 70something dollars paid.

Spent a lot on the cab so far trying not to keep track.

Plausible deniability for the Mrs[emoji23]
