Recommended Posts

I stripped my //c monitor yesterday and started the process of fully restoring it.

The composite connector needed a clean on the wire wheel as did a couple of the metal parts to remove rust.

The case was next and was washed in soapy water and hard to remove marks were hit with a magic eraser. The next step will be a dose of retrobrite.

I'll post more pics as it goes back together.

Cheers Trev

CRTs scare the crap out of me, look at the size of those capacitors. I take it you've worked on plenty of other monitors before though?
No.

I'm no expert just too stupid to know better.[emoji6]

I've worked with 240v and 415v in the past and been zapped by both.

These caps aren't what's going to give you a big kick it's the flyback and any charge held in the tube that'll wake you up pretty quick.

You just have to be aware where the dangers are and be careful around them.

If you're nervous about doing it then it's best left to someone else who's more confident.

You get a 3 phase jolt and that powers up the swear word generator really well. I've done that a couple of times.

We rented a factory for overflow storage and they'd removed all the 3phase outlets and someone must have turned the power back on. I learnt some new swear words that day when I brushed against one of the wires.[emoji38]

I used to check a Cap was totally discharged by putting my pliers across it to drain the last bit of juice. Once the cap was still fully charged ( beer can size cap ) I put the pliers on it and "BOOM", the "shit myself" effect , blew me backwards off my work stool and onto the floor, also a sizable chuck of my pliers vaporised ! :realmad:
