Williams Scorpion pinball project

Recommended Posts

Picked this up two weeks ago as a parts machine.

After seeing it I can't bring myself to use it just for parts

So a small Williams Scorpion pinball project starts.

Over the last two week I been slowly going over it.

All thats missing is a Spinner & Backglass !

The spinners artwork is the same as Gorgar so thats easy to get hold of unlike a Backglass!

Anyway slowly going over the board set.

most of the boardset where working just needing new male Molex pins.

The Driver board had coil transistors blown out with ther tracks

Replacing its 40pins & Replacing the male Molex pins ended up taking well over several hours to do!

Some of that was due to my desolder gun playing up here and there.

Did a few mods, CR2032 battery mod,

and the driver board lamp matrix mod, this really takes sone heat out of there!

If using leds its not needed but once done its a good mod.

Testing the master & slave Displays in another system 6 I have.

Only two of them are working.1 of those needing a pin join.

The Master needed some of the resistors replacing, so if ya doing a few do them all!

After the board work I started with test ROM to see what else needed replacing on the boards.

Over the last few nights I was getting nowhere! The CPU board leds gave 1 flash or they stay on:realmad:

With my spare good driver board I put the CPU back in.

When I put the Displays back in too they did not work:realmad:

The power board was good and the master & 2 slave displays were good when testing in the other system 6.

So that left the CPU board as the issue.

With test ROM troubles I Had to bug Ray to find out what was going wrong.

Turned out my test ROM was stuffed & my CPU board was missing decoder chip IC6 for the displays, I missed that one:rolleyes.

Now with those Fix/Replace we got to testing the driver board that ended up needed IC2 & IC4 replacement.

Thanks to Ray's help I now have a fully working Driver board sets:023: and a working Test Rom.

Over the weekend I had started the playfeld clean.

Just about all the plastic are good,

Some of them have heat warp and only one has a small chip out of it. But still useable.

At a later date will try the putting the plastic in the oven to make then flat.

Can use some info what heat & time limit people have use on there plastic befor.

I put the Red fin Post's in a old dishwasher I have behind the shed,

Was very happy with the way thay cleaned up.

new red clear lane look good

It's all guna have to come off but I wait till I got it fully going and I have had lots of games on it.

Still need to order white lane ways and lane fin.

The left kick out base needs replacement too.

How do lane fins come off? Are thay glue on?

Put my Phoenix spinner in there till I find a replacement.

With two of the save displays not working.

Just put in a set of Rutten Dog led displays DIS326.

I still need to clean & replant the display door.

The white plastic fins pull off exposing two pins.

A cloth on the fin and a pair of pliers pulling straight up should have the fin come off without damage exposing the two pins that hold it in place.

The white lower lane dividers I would swap for blue ones with blue posts. I think it would suit the playfield colours around that area better than the original whites myself.

Thinking about it I would probably replace the fins and posts each end with lane dividers like those used on Fish Tales. The thin version of a normal lane divider Williams didn't have as parts at the time of Scorpion look as though they would fit perfectly.

The white does look a bit bland I think but it definitely was the way the machine was built.

The bent plastics....I have never used the oven for that job preferring the wife's iron with a towel over the top. Not much heat is required.

Thanks Steve grate input.

I don't like the white divider too! was just going by what was in the machine.

I very much like your thinking of the blue clear lane divider with blue fin post! there on my shopping list.

Is this the dividers your thinking of?

Yep they are the ones. Just measure first to make sure but Jesus they look like they would fit. If not real close. Much nicer looking too.

It’s such a very pretty machine, I’m glad you saved it. It would look good in anyone’s collection, even mine. Ha. Wazza

It was a pretty machine mate. The colours flowed well I thought but it was a brutally effect machine at getting you off it quickly for someone else to feed it.

The one I played new was at Parramatta Hoyts picture theatre. We only had two Scorpions and the other was in George Street Sydney. Both suffered from the mentality used on most wide bodies of the day.

The biggest feet extenders used on the back legs wound out fully and remove the front feet all together.

Most times we as players would simply fold a thong and put one under each front leg but that trick didn't last long without being spotted at that place.

I went to both those places and probably played at least one of them. Just don’t remember. A long time ago now.[emoji15]

Thats just about the way I have the legs feet set tho the front feet are in and wound all the way in.

As for the brutally those outer drain lanes just vacuum the ball in !

  • 3 weeks later...

Just added a special solenoid saver Mod.

Believing it be better to replace a fuse then a blown out components if the solenoids lock on.

Was fun getting them in kit form and putting the fuse lugs the wrong way around on the frist one.:lol

Am on a lookout for a old harness to match up wireing colour instead of all green wires!
