I picked this up today from the local Tip Shop. I still can't believe I got it and to be honest I reckon the other guy is still swearing and ranting about it. We both walked in at the same time, looked at it the same time, I went up to the counter and paid for it whilst he stood there claiming it. He pretty much had to be kicked out from the tip ship I think after abusing myself and any employee who looked like they worked there. In fact I would probably have let him take it if he didn't carry on like an absolute **** but people being people I said "**** him" and took it home:

The good:

  • It cost me $100.00
  • It's complete
  • Its an EM
  • All glass intact
  • Cab despite initial fears is rock solid
  • In desperate need of a repaint but easy peasy imo
  • What I thought was wood rot was only gunk
  • It's my first pinball
  • I still can't believe I got it

The Bad:

  • It's a 4 player EM
  • I've never owned a pinball
  • I't s not a 70's Gottlieb EM
  • It's definitely not working
  • It's my first pinball
  • It's rated poorly

So yes I'm going to try to restore it and I realise that's a massive task but I only ever wanted an EM so whilst a massive challenge I'm looking forward to it.

Its better its a williams

Well that's debatable. I ****ing LOVE 70's Gottlieb's so to each their own. Whats killing me is I was talking to a guy in the line. Just this week moved up from Yamba who said he just threw 3 machines out into the tip. Whilst I was crying, he then went on to tell me that his mate in Townsville just dumped 200 machines. Apparently an operator who no one would buy his business so he also dumped his almost 200 machines. I can only hope he was ****ing with me.

hmmmm metal flipper goodness.. thats made my day.

whats with the "its rated poorly" ? 7.6 is very high.

Yeah rated 7.6 but the text reviews are not great. Either way a steal if I can get it going and with the members here and their knowledge that's not in doubt. Probably also tainted with that fact that they're tiny flippers and NOT a 70's Gottlieb. I'm NOT complaining!

ignore the text reviews they're writen by tards and theres not enough of them to sample out the 'everything sucks except $15k games' ones.

Great story and awesome pickup Brad.

It's actually good to hear that these finds still happen. In this day and age I wouldn't believe an op would "dump" 200 games unless he's done an insurance job.

Also, welcome to the dark side - LOL, because you know they breed.

I can send you a DVD of "Gremlins" to give you some insight mate:lol

@ddstoys we captured another human to the mechanical race :P

You guys always had me.

The problem was a) finding them and b) taking them at an acceptable rate ;)

Like i said I'm an EM whore ;)

honestly the flippers on it are worth near what you paid for the whole game .. it was a right score.

Really? Small flippers mate, I mean I know there are 4 of them but still :unsure

Its because they are metal flippers.

I just finished getting one going... its not the most fun game, but still cool having the roulette wheel spin around and having 4 flippers.... it takes a while to get used to controlling the 4 flippers.

edit:

when fixing it up, if you need any close up photos of anything let me know.

Wow you picked a gem. I just looked it up. It has a roulette wheel exactly the same as Bally's SpeakEasy.

Also 4 flippers but wired like I've never seen before...

Pressing the left flipper button activates the far left flipper and both center flippers. Pressing the right flipper button activates the far right flipper and both center flpippers.

I really hope this isn't true.... I've talked to quite a few people around here and never heard of anyone with that number of pinballs in recent times . There is one guy with a Heap of arcade gear but he's still going.

Maybe I need to go to the tip....

You were the first guy I thought of when he mentioned Townsville. Not sure if he mean't pinball, arcade or both. Surely it couldn't possibly be true though. Maybe years ago but no one could be that silly now?

Its not about he size of the flippers, is how you use them that counts ! :lol Great pick-up

Only small flipper guys say that :lol

Awesome pick up Brad! Congrats!

Don't let the '4 player' aspect scare you off working on it. I had minimal trouble with my 4 player Mariner. There are a couple of extra steppers and relays (which means more that can go wrong) - but doesn't mean it will.

If you can source the schematics, do it - they will help - even if you can't read them - you'll get there and plenty of people here to help.

I agree with Doug - ignore the reviews.

This is a great project to take on and let's face it - for $100, even if you don't enjoy the game play, you will have $100 of fun working on it and get that easily when selling.

Hope you have time to put together a repair / restore thread on it!

It's rated poorly

I'm not so sure about that. The translations of the foreign reviews on ipdb are both very good:

The A-Go-Go is actually one of the very few pinball machines that have earned the kit "cult". The device is uncommon in every respect and absolutely trend-setting from history; With the "sharp-angled style", the acute-angled triangle design, Jerry Kelley set new standards for future generations. The design is daring for 1966 and reflects the Zeitgeist of the time. But the technology is spectacular; First flipper with roulette unit on the board and four pinball fingers that can be moved individually by a two-step contact, bonus up to 1900 and the steeply arranged slingshots give rise to high speeds. Impressive even the low-drawn low-charger housing, produced only briefly, and necessary for the first time to integrate a 3-kind Munzprüfer in the huge cash register door. All in all the most beautiful European Championship ever built, and really fun!

The sensational pinball machine of the sixties! Bells ring and roulettes rumble as ?-Go-Go's balls roll! Unbelievable fun through 4 coaxial oppositely arranged flippers made of titanium steel with arithmetically mounted ball pass right, left and center. Unique joy of playing through numerous other gags such as on-off jet bumper (fully automatic), left upper playfield track and right horseshoe lane. Also suitable for commercial installation completely by novel Super Triple coin slot with central Rejector. We can deliver immediately, for a small extra charge of 2 free spins in the original Hoffmann gold metallic Corvette !!! 'Our Test' --- sensational !!! Export Specialist Mr. Kulok says 'You lie down' !!!

And the rest seem to be two camps, "in the context of 60s games this is amazing" and "I don't like it" and the latter might just be they don't like older games.

Pinside notes "With a production-run of 5,100 it ranks #4 of the most succesful machines of the 1960's right behind Gaucho, Capersville and Ship-Mates. The major part of them went to Germany." which makes me think it can't be that terrible of a game.

For $100 I think you've done exceedingly well.
