Possum Twilight Zone restoration

Recommended Posts

Saving the best until last - this Twilight Zone is the last of the possum pinball haul - for those who came in late, read the details here https://www.aussiearcade.com/showthread.php/55269-Pinball-Adventure-Shed-Stash

Overall, the cabinet is reasonably solid, a few chunks out and some delamination- the worst area is in the headbox where either someone has tried to pry the lock out with the finesse of a 2 year old, or maybe a possum had a chew over the many years of it being sotred in a shed on Magnetic Island....

I had stripped out the playfield a couple of years ago, and Savage clearcoated it - i basically dumped all the bits in the cabinet, and have had the completed playfield waiting to be repopulated.

So i had a couple of spare hours this arv, and carefully sorted through all the bits and carefully placed them in neat piles.....kidding - look at the pics - i tend just to dump stuff wherever and sort it once i have cleaned it. I know bagging and marking individual parts and mechanisms works for some people, however there are really only a few different sizes of screws, nuts and bolts and it is fairly easy to work out where they are used - the biggest thing is to take a picture of every part as you remove it, then view the pics in reverse order to reassemble (i hope i still have the pics i took a few years ago when i stripped this one down!).

Once all the parts were out, stripped the remaining hardware like earth braid, brackets, power box etc from the main cabinet.

Belted the base of the cab out as it had some water damage, as did the back of the headbox.

Luckily, i had a pretty nasty looking T2 headbox, however the timber pieces at the top for the backbox lock were in good condition, so knocked them out of it to put straight into the TZ backbox.

Then started sanding the decals off the heabox, only a 5 min job with a decent orbital sander using 80 grit paper.

After that, i clamped and glued the corners to bring them together nice and tight.

Not sure how long this one will take as i am very busy at work, however will poke along when i have time and combine cleaning playfield parts as well as doing the cabinet work.

I'm loving your meticulous approach. I guess after you have worked on as many machines as you have - you become blase. I'd be terrified confronting that!

Been cleaning parts when i have a few spare minutes. Pop bumper assemblies all stripped, cleaned and polished. New coil sleeves and coil wrappers all round.c5efd03ded4856d75d21061a62390afe.jpg

Also found a bit of area where the top layer of ply was close to coming off on an edge. Ive been stung before with this, where you have the cab ready to decal and notice a small edge that could pull away. So now i test all edges and if it looks like it may cause trouble i force it off and fill with bog.

Notice on the pic below some areas with knots under the top layer of ply.fc7ce1cf6bb38a964ce7c213da9e7245.jpg2499ae6e96a8ec82964e2982d73d3aff.jpg

I use a range if products. Normally dolphin brand and upol for finishing. The upol stuff comes in a squishy pack and is quite liquid so nice to fill minor imperfections.

More time spent cleaning. Cleaning and rebuilding mechansims and storing them on the guest bed once clean!

Wireforms were quite rusty, soaked them in a tub of oxalic acid for 12 hours or so, then cleaned down and a quick polish and they look a whole lot better.

A few more small bits done.

Bogging after sanding main cab decals. Also glueing corners after there was a very small gap.

Back of headbox installed and bogged around join as well as installed new internal timber on the side and top of inside headbox.

I tend to replace the emi filter when i go this far with a game. Far easier to do when the box is on the bench than leaning over a game when its installed. I've seen a lot fail now they are quite a few years old.

I like your various collection of weights Rob for holding down the back of the headbox ... surprised you didn't have a photo with a child sitting on each of the corners but I guess the hard thing is keeping them there LOL

  • 2 weeks later...

A fair amount of time sanding, filling, sanding, painting and more sanding!

The main cab was painted before the new base was installed, which means no masking if you want to leave the base natural.

Then once done, time to start installing decals. Door hole is filled with a plug to make life a lot easier.

Then had the apprentice help out with the main cabinet....note, no pregnant wife this time! She is flat out looking after the younger kids!

Also installed Homepin cab protectors. Added some extra felt between the leg and protector to ensure it is spaced out with no risk of the leg contacting the cab. Important to cut a tad larger than the protector so no chance of any movement.

Good to see it up on powder coated legs.
