Medusa restoration

Recommended Posts

The underside is all wired up (correctly i hope)

Flippers are in, tested the GI and 3 lights not working, after some tweaking all now working.

I cannot belive how much is crammed under the playfield.

After finding a suitable paint code (thanks @Railways) I went and bought some paint this morning, and tested on a small area of the backbox and its a pretty good match, got carried away and the test area grew and grewπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

First couple of coats on, I went with a semi gloss water based enamel, but now thinking maybe gloss would be better, I'll see how it looks tomorrow once its dried.

The colours of the cabinet and backbox look completely different, there not, its just my camera..

I'm not sure about going gloss as that's what I did around that headbox facia of mine and it seemed to make the colour richer? if that's the right word. I'm going to actually repaint that area just with the paint itself - no gloss and see what it turns out like. Spray a test piece then gloss it later and see what you think then.

Β

Is it an optical allusion making those flipper coils look about the size of large Williams flipper coils?.

Β

I thought Medusa used normal sized Bally flipper coils as in the size of coils used on say the shingshots but this picture looks on my PC that the flipper coils are much longer than the coils used on the slingshots.

Β

As Pauline Hanson would say, "please explain".

The 4 flipper coils are larger than the sling coils but nowhere near as large as the Williams flipper coils.

I ordered new flipper coils as per the book, AQ-25-500/34-4500

Must just be my PC. AQ-25-500/34-4500 is just a standard Bally coil. On my screen though those flipper coils look about 1/3 longer than the slingshot coil that is right near it.

Β

Sorry, my bad.

Got an early start in the shed this morning, sanding, sanding and more sanding.

Couple of coats on, looking good...

Ill rub it back tomorrow and apply final topcoat.

Very happy the way this is coming along considering what I started with.

That colour is looking damn close eh?. I only had to do a part of the headbox.

Β

stenciling? Apologies paul if you've mentioned it previously:unsure

Β

http://pinballpimpstencils.com/?page_id=490 Deadset the best I have used so far. You just have to careful in what shade of "yellow/gold" to use.

Β

http://christopherhutchins.com/gallery/album684/IMG_2939. The gold here is pretty close IMO but maybe not on all the trim. Its personal taste I know as I colourcode a lot of our WPC games.

Yeah the colour is very close, I rubbed down the inside and gave it its final coat and its darker, which is great.

Thanks for the link for the stencils.

The gold is a little to much for me but still a great restoration, mine won't be a high end resto, just saving from it the scrap heap and hopefully a good clean player..

Agreed all that gold is too much for me as well on and older game with (compared to these days) basic artwork but as I said, it's a personal taste.

Β

My point is the gold colour itself looks very close. They do fantastic work and have done another medusa but the "gold/yellow" imo missed the mark by a bee's dick.

Β

Are you going to paint the headbox support plinth black or leave it the same colour? again personal choice.

Β

Well done on the PF and yes its chockers underneath, especially that rear area with the drops and standups behind them.

Yeah the gold colour looks close, I was told its more of a mustard colour but looks gold against the maroon. I have some close up photos of the artwork but being it was so bad i doubt i can match it to original, Ill get some colour swatches and see what I come up with.

Ill be leaving the the plinth maroon at this stage, can paint it black later if i dont like it, the grill will be black..😊

  • 2 weeks later...

So I have left the cabinet and backbox for a couple of weeks to cure, still not confident it's cured enough to stencil, so I'll leave it a few more weeks but in the meantime a little reconstruction in order.

I have painted the legs and bolts with a colour I found at Supercheap Autos, it a very close match to original.

Tomorrow I'll finish off the cabinet wiring, pop the backbox on install the coin door and hopefully get the playfield in, I have downloaded a "what to do list" from techniek.flipperwinkel.nl before powering up.

You never know I may even get some games in, he says nervously πŸ‘ˆπŸ˜ŽπŸ‘‰

Well, Im pretty bloody happy πŸ˜‰

Finnished off the cab wiring.

Installed coin door.

Slipped the playfield in.

Bolted the backbox on.

Plugged everything in, double checked, triple checked everything.

Held my breath, switched it on and she came alive.

Started a game to look for problems.

Right sling won't fire but sound is activated.

The red bank of targets don't reset but do add score and sounds when targets are dropped.

The display under the playfield doesn't work but 1 wire from display 3 has come out of the plug which also goes to the playfield display, hopefully thats all it is.

20180406_130344.thumb.jpeg.a9e103a0e596a58f6f65996313a058a5.jpeg

Right flipper does not work and left flipper blows a fuse, the switches do need replacing which I'll do tomorrow, zipper flippers do not flip but do go in and out.

Considering the state of this pinny when it got to me, I'm stoked that thats all is wrong.

Well its all go now,

Tried another display in the playfield and bingo, now works

Right sling coil was a dud, replaced that.

Right target bank was wired incorectly, oops πŸ™„

Flippers were a real challenge for me, completely desoldered all wiring to all 4 flippers, the 8 switches and started again. All 4 now working but have some left over wires on 2 of the switches on the lower flippers, will deal with that tomorrow πŸ‘Œ
