Favourite 8 or 16-bit RPG ?

Recommended Posts

I never really got into The Bards Tale or almost any of the others. Wasteland and early Mechwarrior games pretty much but ultimately most never held my interest and still don't to this day. Have no interest even in the modern pretyy looking ones like Oblivion etc.

Same, I tried with a few of the Bard's Tale series. They were popular, but I couldn't get into them. I felt the same about the Ultima series.

I enjoyed and finished Faerie Tale on the Amiga, the only (almost) rpg I played on that platform. it was quite graphically rich for the time. i think after Faerie tale I was just into Arcade and sport games full time...

I enjoyed Phantasy Star also :) but I'm not sure if I would replay it now.

I finished Phantasy Star IV back in the day (and would have rated it as one of my favourite Mega Drive games) and replayed it via Emulation a few years ago. I remember making notes and hand drawing maps (not checking the internet) and reckoned I enjoyed it as much as I did the first time so reckon if you enjoyed it once you would do so again.

Ultima IV stands as one of my all time favourite games. Had a friend whose father had a clunky old laptop and they had it (think it was mono graphics) so I was introduced to it there and if I am honest I cant recall if I sourced it and completed it on PC or Atari ST but it was an awesome gaming experience. Many years later after grabbing my PC (at $3.5K which was more than I paid for my first car :o ) I remember spending $400+ to upgrade my RAM from 4mb to 8mb just to play Ultima VIII :lol

Bards tale I finished on the Atari ST - main memory that has stayed with me from that game to this day was somewhere there was an encounter that was 4x99 Barbarians I think - pretty sure I had a dragon with me (and decent magic users) that could hit all groups so it was an experience goldmine!!

Hey @Brad - So do I read that you were still a MechWarrior fan? I loved the first game (used to play it when we had computer in High School) and have maintained the interest over the years in all Mech type games. Just thought I would jump in and post about the new Mechwarror game due for PC this month - http://battletechgame.com/ actually has my interest so if you didn't know about it could be worth checking out.

@ozfalcon - Your avatar is actually another of my all time fave games. Indeed I have a folder somewhere with that imagery as at some point I wanted to get it printed onto a black Tshirt (only recently having discovered print your own shirts). I had The Sentinel on the CPC464. No idea how far I ever got but over the years I have fired it up occasionally. I always wanted to figure out the algorithm for the 10K levels (just out of curiosity I guess and to be able to pick any level number and know the level code) and in more recent times tried debugging it to figure it out but after wasting a few hours I gave up so if anybody reading this fancies figuring it out let me know :D I ending up just editing a save state to give X energy which I guess means with time I could play to 10K but yeah - its not the same as knowing how that code is calculated.

My handle is of course in reference to Mike Singletons MidWinter which I had for the AtariST which I loved but the more important game for me was Lords Of Midnight!! Another game I thought was amazing (well to me as a kid anyway) and still resonates to this day and I will occasionally have a play with (wasted hours writing save game editors etc.).

Yeah it does look pretty good @Brad - I tried MWO but never really got into it but in the last year I revisited MechCommander 2 (and that Omnitech remake) and that was still fun to play. Have been looking forward to seeing how this one so fingers crossed it is a good game to scratch that Mech itch.

Sadly no, but it is still an amazing game. I remember guessing the answers to the security questions as a kid. Good times. My formative years were well spent :)

Why not? You play the role of Larry and it's the Same engine as other Sierra adventure games.
