Pinball Perfection
Ok people l thought I'd share what got me into restorations. This was my first full resto and once completed l started getting asked to do this sort of work quite often so Pinball Perfection was born. I just moved all the pics into a folder which totalled 441 so obviously l won't post everything but I'll try to cover the process as best l can. As it was my first there is some things that aren't 100% and many lessons were learned and now done differently. I'll start from the start and post up progressive pics and give a short explanation of what I'm showing. If l start to bore you with the pics and posts just say so and I'll just show the finished product as I'm just going to post up bits most days to try and show as much of the process as possible. This is not going to be a "how to" thread as l do things different to some as l worked within the panel shop industry and some of the products used have to be done a certain way and any variation can cause damage, becaise this is my line if work some things I'm not going to go into full detail about so please understand that it's because I'm not going to be responsible if someone stuffs up and blames my processes and products for damage they cause. Already bored you enough so here are the first lot if pics. Couldn't find a complete before pic so it jump right in. Pinball Perfection
The last pic you can see the ply is trashed on the inner side of front panel of base, it was trimmed back to remove damaged wood leaving a nice edge to work with and glue a strip of ply in. Pinball Perfection
Quite a bit of time spent on something nobody sees but helps with creating a solid cab As l decided to go full gloss inside and out a LOT of time goes into the preparation as black shows EVERY imperfection. After all major repairs are done it's primer and pick up all the little repairs that need attention. Pinball Perfection
Final prime and it's time for black Time to apply decals now it's completely FLAT. Any imperfections would have to be fixed now as the majority of cab art is black and l planned to clear over decals for a ridiculously full gloss cab. Pinball Perfection
Here the decals have been cleared. Not something l would recommend doing without some experience with solvent based products as you can melt the decals. Glenn70
What do you use now to protect the decals? Do you use the 'stand off' leg protectors like the Stern type or Johns Arcade metal type?
Pinball Perfection
@Manny65, pinball machines not a huge period of time but my previous jobs made the transition quite easy. @Glenn70, only ever used the Stern style. Silver Surfer
I think cabs that have been clear coated are amazing. It enhances the whole look . I wish all my cabs were like this. c_mario
Do you use any adhesion promoter on the decals before clear coating? I wonder about longevity of the process. Generally a base coat needs to be scuffed before clear is applied to provide good adhesion. Plastics need a plastics primer, e.g. vehicle bumper bars. What technique are you using? Pinball Perfection
Do you use any adhesion promoter on the decals before clear coating? I wonder about longevity of the process. Generally a base coat needs to be scuffed before clear is applied to provide good adhesion. Plastics need a plastics primer, e.g. vehicle bumper bars. What technique are you using? I'm well aware of the process required so longevity is not an issue. Firstly the decals can't be laminated as the clear won't bond. Secondly the decals have to be sanded for the clear to bond. Like l said at the start I've worked with these products for years so l know what's required and l don't recommend doing it unless your well versed with the products and process. This is not a how to do thread I'm just posting my work. Every process isn't posted for a reason as explained in the first post. My way isn't the only way but what I'm comfortable with due to previous experience in the auto and marine industries. I'm confident in my skills and technique so it is what it is take it or leave it. Pinball Perfection
I decided to add some Aussie flavour to this so made some Jarrah timber inlays for the gun handle as l had some left over from a dinning table l made from recycled decking.
