      Lethal Weapon 3 Restore

Ok, @prowler just dropped off this reasonably tidy LW3 just purchased from @Martymart in SA. The machine will get my treatment and hard work over the next few months as it's going to be a gift from one of my close mates (who paid for it) for his brother who played this title back in the 90's. Very nice playfield as one of the best I have seen on a LW3, and overall pretty good machine to work with, but it does require a few parts and a decent tidy up. The cab will be fully restored complete with new lacquered MDF base and new 'black edition' laminated decals. All external metal trim will be powder coated black, hopefully with that mild ripple type effect that DE brought out. The playfield itself is very good but a few parts needed and will get a decent strip down and clean. The display is very good with the red DMD cover already on it. Nowhere near as bad a machines as some extensive resto's that are completed here by some very talented people, but I'm sure this job will come up nice when all done.

Will try and post as many pics as I can, as I go along but too late to remove playfield and photograph inside the cab just yet.

That seems to be a very good original machine to do all that to? I'd be happy with it the way it is?

Yes you are right, I'd be very happy with it too. As I am not paying for it and it's not for my collection, the owner gets the final say and he wants the black edition decals (that do look bloody nice on this machine). Inside the cab needs a decent clean up and the base is quite bad as at some stage a car jack or similar punched a hole and left serious cracks in the base, that will need replacing. At this stage the budget is a strict $800-$1000 on top of the machine cost. The owner will be attending on the weekend to determine exactly what he wants replacing and/or what he wants to leave.......specifically coin door and legs as they are not in the best shape. Maybe a few plastics and other minor parts on PF too.

So let me get this right. Your friend is doing this for his brother?
Well I guess my three brothers will be getting a link to this thread tomorrow then. Just for a little Christmas inspiration.

      Will be following this one.

Ha ha, yes indeed. Damn generous brother. The story behind it is very typical and common I guess. The brother spent many hours playing this machine when he was in his early 20's, back in 92/93 I'm tipping. The machine was at his work in the kitchen/mess room and he still talks about it today. So his brother can now afford to surprise him with a restored version of one for his own home.

After a huge day of attending a funeral and work, I arrive home and couldn't help myself. I had to spend a short time removing the old dented coin door and priming and spraying black the heads of 8 x leg bolts and 4 x coin door bolts. First the coin door bolt heads had to be stripped with a wire attachment on the drill to remove the prior 5 coats of paint! I have a new coin door to replace the damaged one. I love tinkering and improving a pin. Made me feel better about today for sure.

Old coin door was quite dented in the middle but hard to see from front on photo.

Made my 1 minute mini spray booth up too.

The playfield, boards and head box will be removed on Sunday and will fully assess what parts are required and then the research and ordering starts. Fun times indeed.

I made a start today with a little spare time I had. Removed translite and cleaned a little adhesive residue off the back, but looked like a new one anyway. Removed translite light board, but as the machine came from Italy with most people smoking in pinball location environments, it had a hazy film of most likely smoke and dirt/dust on both sides of the board. I cleaned up the rear with brush and baby wipes all over the wires and did the front with 'Jif' (creme cleanser) and over again with baby wipes. Came up really well and like new again. Never underestimate the benefit and uses from baby wipes! Hopefully tonight when kids fall asleep, I can remove playfield from cab and all boards from head box, then to strip the inside of cab.

I grabbed these old legs (rusty but reasonably straight BW legs), that I intend to powder coat 'ripple effect' black with the rails, hinges, lockdown bar and gun. That will all go in early Jan when the company re-opens.
