I've been considering 3d printer options....

Recommended Posts

I watched a few more reviews and the print quality seems insane compared to other similar price printers.

What the hell ... *clicks buy*

Congrats on the purchase,

Just arrived (Wednesday) some black plastic and black pla+ on ebay $18.50 and $21.50 free delivery, yet to try.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3D-Printer-Filament-PLA-PLA-1-75mm-1kg-20-colors-Melbourne-Stock-Fast-Shipping/302785818020?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=601671534378&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Also arrived yesterday some more filament from Hobby king runs around $20 /kg and free delivery for orders over a certain amount.

Add 5% to their site pricing as it converts back to US dollars, my order went from $100 to around $105 on PayPal. Kind of a game, get the kg and price combo right and they delivery free couriers please, other wise it is free fast way.

I've noticed some small blemishes. I'll have to see if that's something caused by how I've put the machine together or just standard.

Very minor thing. Overall very impressed for a first print!

I've been considering 3d printer options....

Had a few issues with my next few prints. Common issue of melted filament building up in between the hot end and the end of the ptfe tube. This was causing under extrusion.

Made a bunch of stuff for the printer itself and a couple of failed attempts at something for a pin.

Cable chain parts. Lots of spidering on this one as I am still playing with bed and nozzle temperatures. Quite a few bits to go on this one. Having some issues with first layer adhesion (see the difference in colours on the brim).

Two test prints to see how much detail could be retained if I made a Flynn sign for my tron.

Seems this might be beyond my printers capabilities.

My process is to level the bed with the nozzle very close to the bed and then clean the bed with isopropyl alcohol.

There are a lot of things people try like using blue painters tape on the bed, rub a glue stick on the bed or spray it with hair spray. I've had no luck with any of these but it may be different for you.

Large flat prints seem to be the worst for adhesion issues for me. I had a bit of luck with pla by cranking the temp up to 220 degrees but not on everything. And as you've noticed brims can help.

I think my next printer will have a heated print bed.

Cheers Trev.

I haven't quite figured out the combinations of filament temp vs bed temp for best first layer adhesion.

I do have a glue stick so I can give that a quick try also.

My bed is actually slightly curved near the middle. I'll grab a piece of glass during the week and see if that helps. I'll also have to bump the temp up as the glass will be lower in temp.

That's probably most of your problem if the bed isn't flat. Yeah I've heard of using glass too. Are there suggested temps written on the filament packaging?

I use glue stick and lots of it,

I also slow down the print speed on the first layers and brim layer to help with sticking. that can be done in the program

Hmmmm. I might check that out. What slicer software do you use? I use Cura.

Cura, yer, There is a section in the menu I cant think off the top of my head sorry which drop down it was, but any way it allow you to add more options to the options down the right hand side, there is about 20 extra options Ive added which help allot.

Just tick a bunch of them you think sound useful.

but one option allows you to slow down speed or speed up on certain layers.

Where did you get that?

The place I got the printer from was selling filament also it just came in these boxes.

Seems more of a generic box than a specific brand.

Bought a piece of glass and it seems to have helped with doing the first layer.

Just hot glued it on the four corners as I didn't want to use bulldog clips. It's easy to remove, just turn the bed up high and just lift off.

I also tried some of that blu uhu stick which helped also.

Got octoprint and web cam working, surprisingly easy!

Brim is coming out really nice now. Almost seems too thick now.

Had anyone put dampeners on their motors?

I bought a couple at the same time as the filament but hadn't put them on until tonight.

I got two of these :https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2018-3D-printer-part-17-Stepper-Steel-and-Rubber-Vibration-Dampers-for-3D-printer-part/32844873239.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27fe4c4ddBRdku

I probably need another one as I didnt know extruders had a stepper also.

Took me a while to figure out how to install them as well as remediate the switch locations as the build plate collided with the motor when they are installed.

I'll put up a comparison tomorrow when my first print finished but i'm hoping many of the ghosting artifacts I was getting in my prints disappear.

I would have thought that was for sound dampening?

They reduce vibration passing from the steppers through to the print head thus reducing ghosting "apparently".

My big print overnight failed for various reasons (Forgot to turn supports on, some first layer adhesion issue) but in the parts that did work the ghosting is maybe reduced but I'm not really sure.
