Pinball from my youth restoration

Recommended Posts

I'm about to start on a hook pinball restoration. I know it's probably not a pin most people would spend their time on but it's a title that got me hooked (no pun intended) on pinball as a young kid.

I love working on pinball, so what could be better than bringing a pin that has so many good memories back from the dead no matter what the rating or collectibility.

So here's what I'm dealing with

Cabinet has been beaten up a bit

Playfield isn't in too bad shape. All ramps are good. No cracks. Most plastics are good.

The display isn't working but I'm not sure yet if it's the actual display or the power supply. I'll rebuild the power supply and find out about display when the time comes.

I always start by marking which connectors go on which board by colour coding zip ties to a specific board. I usually have 5 colours red blue green yellow and black but I've run out so did some double zips on this one. I find it saves a heap of time and frustration when sorting the wiring back into the back box. c6e67a95568f204aa5b0000e3c6cdd16.jpg21ca98e3d5005fcad41b30bb6d00cf7b.jpg

Sweet, I've done some work on Hooks before. Not a bad machine at all. Better than some they made.

I like the cable tie idea but hey, you ran out of colours.

Black texta mark at different pin slots on both the male and female side of the plug is my technic.

It comes in handy on Data East machines because they love using those stupid interconnector male plugs that have a female plug come in on both sides as if they had an abundence of females in the factory.

You only need to mark the plugs pin slots once using perminant black marker and it stays there for however else works on the machine in it's life.

Mind you, it's much easier when the machine has all it's plugs plugged in and you just work from the top down doing a different pin hole each plug and socket.

Even if you pull the harness out, the marks still line up with the sockets they came off.

Don't rule out the display. They didn't last real long for some reason.

Anyway, good luck on the Hook.

I'm starting with the playfield so I can get it to a panel beater mate who does my clear coats. He's all set up for it and does mine when he's doing a car. While it's curing I can get stuck into the cabinet.

After I've roughed up the surface ready for clearing I like to touch up any key lines that are a bit average with a paint pen. This brand is great as it doesn't react with 2k clear. b2595f5e05e8be440a8a8431139c7988.jpg

Worn areas have been filled. Even though it's will get some hole protectors it needs to be built up to keep the protector nice and straight. I've picked up a couple of pins with the protectors placed straight over the damage, the protectors have over time moulded to the worn area and looks rubbish. bb34da8bf2715a77cf55f02149aecd2d.jpg

I'll probably run them for another 12 or so. Not going to hurt to do it while I start the cabinet.

Just found this thread. Awesome stuff.

Love the opening remark "Cabinet has been beaten up a bit" :lol A bit is an understatement. Coming up great and I agree it's not a bad game and played it a fair bit on holidays down the south coast.

Keep up the great work.

I have no idea of the story behind the pin but The guy I got it off had a cue ball wizard out in the rain when I went to get this. He was trying to get me to buy it.

"Ah no thanks mate I've already got a water feature at home!"

If any pinball restorer is looking for a reason to buy a tumbler just refer to the before and after photos above.

sweet where did you acquire that set? tumbler work is awesome also

Retro a few months back. I had known about this pin for about 15 months but never pulled the pin on it as I wasn't able to get the decals. As soon as I found some I rang the guy up. I really wanted to rescue it.

Bit under the weather today. Didn't do a lot. Just spent an hr picking media out of screws and posts. As you can see jr boof helped me out while watching the footy. He actually enjoys doing it which is a surprise. 9675aa6b8d22ea030fb182740462ff27.jpg645aa085c1b8f3a27c56cf48d7225b4c.jpgs

I use corn cob media from the local gun shop in a vibratory tumbler. A small squirt of metal polish in there as well does a great job. Worst part by far is picking all the media out of the screw heads and metal posts.

I should have taken some pics of the playboy resto I've been doing. That really showed what a difference a good tumbling can make. I think that's why I'm documenting this one a bit more.
