Project games room - 'The Turd on Curd'

A little while ago I bought a house on a hill with a view - a view to move there one day and keep my kids from nagging me, 'dad, we've got to move closer to the city'..

So I bit the the bullet, made massive changes to my work and personal situation and thought **** it, lets make a new start - time to move forward. A few months in and after refusal after refusal (DA knock backs from from council, due to being a 'character home in a character street') and budget constraints I decided to just work with what I have, and ditch and grand plan of raising the house and increasing the footprint. All this happens for a reason and I'm happy with where I'm at and will be a shit load better off financially.

Unfortunately my phone died so I really don't have any early pictures - but today as I was working away I got to thinking that really I should put a 'My Games Room Build' up on AA. Its not much really, but I'm making progress, as well as trying to renovate the upstairs of this place, and get my primary place of residence sold. Its been a busy couple of months, but there is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel.

Downstairs was a little warren of rooms. A bedroom, kitchen, shower, and a small lounge room.. Low ceilings, dark and dingy. ****ing horrible.. After much deliberation and said council setbacks I set to work to demolish downstairs, rip everything out and make it open plan.. This downstairs area will be my games room and home office. One of the major changes was dissolving my company partnership. I could never have done this whilst being 'gainfully employed', so as a result I'll need a home base office area.. That or I'll go see Centerlink.

Demolition in progress..

So after ripping out all the walls, and tearing up all the floors and knocking out all the concrete I'm left with a skeleton. We then set to strengthening the place structurally.. (We : myself and my good mate who in his spare time gives me invaluable help, sets me on track and gives me a push). We steel plated all the bearers and added a couple of steel posts. As it is now, its a hell of a lot more sound. How it was previously supported makes for pretty scary nightmares. At the same time the whole downstairs was rewired and fitted out to support pinballs and arcade games.! Fantastic help in this regard to a fellow forum member.. Thank you very much sir.! Data cabling, speaker cable etc have also been wired in as best as I could see fit for the space that I have.

Time to pour the concrete.. I really wanted a polished concrete finish but couldn't unless I wanted to knock out a few more cubic meters of existing concrete - **** that. No way. So I get a pour and have it finished with an epoxy type covering with a grey fleck spread though it.. It was really pissing down at the time, Brisbane flooded and the concreter wasn't able to get the correct fleck so he made it up himself.. I'm pretty happy with the finish..

Time to start thinking about getting this placed lined.. And I hate plastering. So, simple solution was to buy some MDF VJ paneling.. Or so I though, and it turns out its just as much work as fixing and setting gyprock.! Anyway forwards and onwards. And of course I have to box in the bearers and quad everything that needs quadding, and jam and architrave the doors and windows and on and on it goes.. And all this in a 1911 house that's on a hill, with a lean.. Nothing is square and nothing is plumb. What a shit fight.

Meanwhile the same sort of crap is going on upstairs.. knocking out walls, moving doors ways, framing in new walls, building closets, ripping out the kitchen to turn into a new bathroom, installing the new kitchen where there was no kitchen, and on and on it goes.. Open plan baby - capitalise on that view. So during this process I figure why not move the old upstairs kitchen downstairs and make it more self contained. Good plan.

And that pretty much brings me up to date.. This last weekend I've spent many hours boxing in (arris edges and quirks ;) ) and architraving and filling in gaps. Bastard Bunnings was closed today so that put me on a bit of a hold as far as gap filling is concerned, but as said above, there is now light at the end of the tunnel. The plan is to seal this place up to a habital space and get my machines in there and continue to get upstairs done.

Nice job and an excellent post. Question... Do you have enough machines to fill it?.

Thank you for sharing.

The space isn't massive - but yes, more than enough machines to fill it :)

Got the guys in today to measure a new stone bench top for the kitchenette. It'll be more of a wet bar than kitchen as I don't want a cooker of any sort in this area.

Amazing work man! Love that floor, it's giving me ideas. :)

How shit is all the red tape you have to go through! I've been trying to build a house since last February! SO MUCH back and forth between engineers/certifier/architect/council & builder. And 3 of those are family! :)

I think this is why so many people just go in and buy project homes. Seem to be a hell of a lot easier.

Looking forward to seeing how your project comes along. Make sure to keep that phone charged for pics! :) :)

Really like how the floor came up - great job!!

Been a year since we finished the full reno at our old place and as much as we were all over it by the end and glad to have it finished and sold, we sort of miss having a reno project to work on ... so great to see your pics and looking forward to the next installment. Well done on rolling up sleeves and having a crack!

A bit more progress this weekend.. Lots of painting, very tedious it is painting VJ. Working out the right technique is vital and I think I finally have. Don't start by brushing the V's and then coming back to roll the remainder, just get a broad brush and hit the panel all at the same time, then come back and roll a second coat. Unfortunately I got the technique wrong and on the fourth go around its finally evening out. Lots of white - not much imagination there, but the ceiling is low so I decided white is best.

Got to get to the glaziers in the next few days and find a piece of glass for this window. Up this side wall was a steep staircase going to no where - where it came out upstairs has been floored off, and the hole where the stairs went through the wall, is now a window. And flush LED lights installed throughout. They are a bit bright but they have been banked into 3 rows of 3 lights per row, so there is a bit of lighting control. I really didn't put heaps of thought or planning into the room, but on the whole its turning out ok. Planning for plenty of power points over a few different circuits, cabling for ceiling mount speakers and an access point plus a line for a hard wired smoke detector is all that was really catered for. CAT6 data points at the TV location and where I'll place my desk etc have also been wired through. I figure what ever I forgot, will be overcome via wireless anyway.

The stone guys came and installed the counter tops on Thursday and I reckon that for a re-purposed kitchen its come up pretty good.. I opted for an under counter sink and decided to extend the counter and get a 'waterfall' end piece installed. Hopefully I can find a decent glass door bar fridge to put in this opening. The only issue is that the refrigeration (back) of the fridge will be exposed on one side. Can you get a bar fridge that opens from front and back so it looks better. Any ideas on that..?

And finally last night I decided I wanted a game of Fish Tales so I grabbed it out of the lockup and wheeled it in.. And it just fits  As I mentioned, the ceiling is a little low at a shade under 2100mm and with the topper dome on I couldn't lift the head box up fully. I do know that the corner where I put that machine is the lowest point (about 15mm lower) so if I moved it further into the room I reckon with the dome cover on I'll be ok. That or sell it and get machines without toppers.! Even though the ceiling falls in that corner, we did actually jack up all the bearers past level and faced the bearers with full lengths of steel plate bolted to the bearers. We the let the jacks down and the house did level up a hell of a lot better than is was, and structurally it is a lot better of for it.

Work ongoing upstairs meanwhile.. Stone counters and sink installed in the new kitchen and all new plumbing in the to be bathroom, more paneling and a new wall being installed in the end room to create a kids bedroom with a small rumpus / TV lounge. Hopefully I'll get the bathroom lined this week ready for drainage and water proofing..

Looks great woka! Are the poles going to be covered ?

Not to sure what to do with the poles.. I was thinking that I could simply spray them with a hammertone type paint. I don't want to go to the trouble of boxing them in.

Suggestions.?
