Virtual Pin Build (Finally Started)

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Today I finally started my virtual pin project.

Today I focused on starting the cabinet restoration.

Thanks to forum member "Guy with a Pinball" who kindly donated an old Bally Spectrum cabinet to get me started.

We then proceeded to strip it down by removing remaining internal components.

Removing the side rails started to become tricky as I would like to restore them for reuse. So they had to be removed with minimal damage or scratching.

We used the old speaker grill to help with this.

Now with the cabinet stripped down its time to get out the sander. We started with 60 grit on an orbital sander. But that was not cutting it.

Off to the hardware store and picked up some 40 grit for the belt sander. Wow! what a difference. Then went back over it lightly with some 150 grit.

From this:

To this in no time:

Now its ready for some wood filling to create a perfectly smooth surface for painting and applying decals.

Not bad for an afternoons work. I feel like I am really getting my teeth into it now.

I have also been working on the electronics but more on that later.

Yeah it's much better to do all the work on the cab, get everything fitted up and tested then strip it out again and prep/paint, otherwise you'll end up with scratched up artwork.

A bit more work but worth it to prevent accidents that might damage new artwork.

Here's my build thread.

Another sand with fine grit and a coat of paint add some legs and

now its ready to start planning the layout of the electronics and play field mounting.
