LAI Space Invaders Cocktail (Midway Clone)

Recommended Posts

I've had this cocktail cab sitting in a corner waiting for a PCB and chassis.

The original chassis for this unit was a AWA TV converted to arcade chassis.

Looks like they were purchased as a blank PCB and only populated with what's need to produce an arcade image.

I saw one of these advertised on Gumtree as pulled from a working LAI Coffin Cab, with a 51cm Mitsubishi tube included in the sale for $60 so I took a punt and did the 2 hour round trip to pick it up.

I swapped the chassis out and kept the original 47cm Mitsubishi tube in the cab.

It now throws up a reasonable image on screen.

The next issue with this cab is that there is no -5v from the power supply.

There look like some liquid has been spilled on the underside of the PCB and there is some obvious track rot.

I have two spares so I'll get them on the test bench and try to get one working one out of the three.

The original game board was missing when I bought the cab so I'm unsure of what was in it originally.

It was wired for a Taito 3-Layer PCB with [G] & [T] connectors, I've purchased a board for it bit it still needs a few repairs. I have a working board for testing the cab though.

What I'd like to do with this cab is run the Space Invaders II (Head to Head) ROM set.

I'm not sure if it's possible to get these running on a Taito 3-Layer PCB though.

I had a spare power supply that had wires soldered to the main connector pins and a few broken fuse holders.

I robbed the parts required from the faulty power supply, I put it back in the cab, adjusted voltages and now I have another working cab.

It still needs a clean and tidy up but it's now playable.

  • 2 years later...

Not long after getting this cab up and running the chassis decided to die and the cab has sat dormant for the last two years, I've since robbed the power supply and used the SI 3-Layer PCB for another cab.

I've RGB modded a TV for it but after going back through this post I've realised it has a 47cm tube in it and I might have a challenge fitting the 51cm tube in it but I'll find out later tonight.

So far I've gutted the original electricals, the Taito power supply has been replaced with a switcher and I installed a new 12v Thermaltake 120cm fan to replace the old 110vAC fan that sounded like a DC-3 getting ready for take off .

I tested the monitor, PCB and cab wiring.

All good but the monitor is too big so I'll see if I have a 48cm CRT TV that I can RGB mod for it.

I've ordered an original remote for the TV as the image size and position needs correcting through service mode.
