My 1st project restoration -Gottleib sys1 - pinball pool

Recommended Posts

So I picked up a pinball pool.

I wanted to attempt a restoration and figured being no ramps or too much on the playfield would be a good first machine to attempt. I'm really keen to learn how these work. I seem to learn best being thrown in the deep end [emoji23] so I will see how I go.

It has 2 playfields and parts for 2, apparently it lights up but doesn't start.

Previous owner painted stencil only on one side so I will need to chase down a stencil at some stage

1st off I'm going to go through the steps from pinrepair guide and see how I go :) I read the whole guide in downtime at work so now time for the practical

I have also just ordered the videos made by darksoul, for the same it

machine so his pointers will be good for a noob like me[emoji12]

My 1st project restoration -Gottleib sys1 - pinball pool

So far my testing has been

Test all coils to have higher than 2ohms -all good

Check all fuses by removing them using beep on multimeter- all good

**QUESTIONS**

Test bridge rectifiers with red probe on green ground wire and black on each of others getting a value of between .4 & .6 volts

Here's my first question.

1 bridge rectifier is fine 3 prongs test in mid .5 range -so all good

The other bridge rectifier is in .5 range on 2 prongs but the 3rd gives 1.258

So this needs to be replaced?

Second part of question,

Is there only 2 bridge rectifiers ? Being both near fuses

its nearly impossible for it NOT to light the gi if the fuse is ok .. its pretty much wired straight to the transformer and doesnt mean the mpu is booting at all.

i doubt the bridge is an issue.. i also doubt you understand the testing of it to be honest.. read about what they actually do before you mess with it. once you get what it does you can test it easily without resorting to diode tests ( which dont work with it in circuit as you found)

< obligatory safety warning.>.. the (usually) exposed mains terminals at the emi filters in these are STILL LIVE when the machine is off.. unplug from wall before touching things if you arent sure what you're doing.. they're far from safe.

You right wiredoug, I don't really understand about the bridge. Only what I read in the pinrepair pre-power up guide on how to test it, and that should get a reading of between .4-.6 volts, then a Google search of what is a bridge rectifier.

Basically I bought the machine a month ago and has been sitting in my shed since then. I didn't even plug it in prior buying it as it was in storage just took the word of seller about the Gi lighting up, but not playing.

I still haven't plugged it into power now.

So now I know that's because that cables missing.. Why a game won't start

Today I will continue through the Pre-power guide, and note anything that's the guide says is not correct

short simplified version of what a bridge rectifier does is it converts AC to DC power..

It has 4 connections ( two opposing pairs. ) north and south for example are both AC, east and west are DC and Ground.

You can measure the dc output if you like. its probably labelled + ~ - ~ <-- postive, AC, negative, AC .. and the negative point will be obvious as well by the wire color ( cant remember if its green or black but it will make sense when you see it

i doubt its broken .. the airgap in the power wiring is a much bigger trauma.

Such a shame about the playfield wear from the left flipper drag.

Such an easy thing to prevent and yet so many playfields have been wrecked by this.

Good luck with the resto and the learning curve

Yes the playfield in its pretty trashed all round it's peeling badly on the sides as well

The spare playfield has no drag, but the green above the flippers is not solid looks like the colour has split.

Somethings that you may need to know.

1, You will need to repin all the PCB plugs. Replacements http://www.docentelectronics.com/httpdocs/AmusementGames/Pinball/Gottlieb/System%20One.htm

2, The MPU board spider chips don't exist any more so if dead you´ll need a Flippp MPU board. http://www.flippp.fr/boards.php?lg=en

3, If the Power supply board is stuffed Flippp or Rottendog can save you. http://www.rottendog.us/GPS002.html

4, The gold trannys on the driver board don´t exist either however you can use a TIP120 backwards with crossed legs. A replacement http://www.rottendog.us/GDB001.html

5. The blue displays can be rejuvenated if brightness is uneven.

Good luck with your project.

Not sure of what Wako skill set is but keep in mind if he is an absolute beginner as it's his first resto project, some of the tech advice being given might as we'll be in Chinese. No offence meant to @wako

yeah and shoutouts to all the people who critique the advice but dont actually offer any help themselves ... ( not you rob)

I assume that's aimed at me Doug. So for your info, via pm, before this thread started I sent the OP the game manual he was after, advice on getting and following the pinrepair guides, thoughts on overlays, advice to get Darksouls dvd and a source for a replacement playfield.

The thing is not all of us feel the need to stroke our dick in public.

no not anyone in particular.. i really dont know you and have no great reason to mention you .. it was more an a "oh good here we go again" thing...

but if the cap fits you can wear it .. see you just sent yet another system1 thread all the way from an explanation of bridge rectifiers to comments like "stroke our dick in public". im not sure how old you are but if your'e past about 13 you really should be embarrassed using comments like that in a public forum.

Right, so Rob makes a comment about advice being above OP and I like it. You shoutout to people who critique but don't offer help but exclude rob from your observation and it's not aimed at me, in fact, now it's aimed at no one in particular! Disingenuous at best.

But, yep absolutely right and ever so plausible - you stick with that line and stroke away, certainly adds to your credibility.

The only reason I made my comment is because I have been in a similar position where advice was being given and everyone expects that you know what they are talking about when given technical advice when a lot of it goes straight over a novices head

Your surprise might arrive on the mail tomorrow for some weekend viewing..........?

Best of luck with the resto, there is nothing more satisfying than knowing the game that is kicking your arse is one you saved with a bit of well applied love :) .
