Without internals, parts may not be all that easy to procure. Unless John has some spares he is willing to part with, it's going to be difficult to find a power supply and vector monitor in Australia.

Asteroids PCBs are a lot more common than Asteroids Deluxe PCBs that's for sure. Good luck with the restore. I'll be interested to see your progress.

On a side note I came across this emulator for vector games

AAE Vector game emulator

So I downloaded it, ran asteroids deluxe MAME Rom and it looks amazing

You can choose to have the background or not and a few other settings

Compared to running it in normal MAME its so much better

Until I find (and afford!) original internals this might be a temporary option

Link for anyone how to install - https://emudreams.wordpress.com/aae-emulation-tutorial/

Finally some progress

Firstly was to cleanup the sides including the artwork

I really want to keep it original as possible so after giving it a good scrub it came up really well, there are a few nicks and marks but for a 35 year old cab Im happy

I removed the T molding and trimmed all the peeling artwork from the edges then bogged, painted etc etc -

A small section of artwork (top left side) was missing but a bit of hand painting to blend it in made it not that noticeable

I also picked up an original marquee also in great condition (Ebay)

Tossing up between keeping the T molding black or maybe using a dark blue (TNT Amusements did it blue in one of there videos and it looked good)

Next will be Control panel, coin door and fitting the marquee (All coming soon)

Are you sure that's the same cabinet you bought from me?

Looks great, I bet a lot of work has gone into it so far, but the end result sure has paid off!

Also, I could possibly be persuaded to part with one of my spare G05-802 monitors :)

Regards,

Johns-Arcade.

Small update

So with the USD a little better I decided to get a few more parts for the cab

Coin door - From http://www.arcadeshop.com/i/224/atari-williams-pinball-coin-door-2.htm

Also got a Control panel off Ebay (wasn't cheap) but nothing else around but Im glad I did as it came up fantastic with a good scrub and some new buttons - hardly a mark on it

Buy Asteroids PCB and then get the (Braze) Multigame kit

So you can play

Asteroids Delux, Asteroids, and Lunar Lander

http://www.brasington.org/arcade/products/adl/

John installed one for me, and works a treat

Thanks

I have seen that some where on my internet travels

Just need to save up and get a working board and start the internals

Ok guys before I start I do want to get this cabinet back to original some day so dont banish me for MAMEing a classic cab!!

But as you know original parts for this aren't available at Bunnings so i wanted to get it out of the corner collecting dust and see it get used

So I put in a 19" LCD running AAE emulator which gives it a great 3D look hopefully similar to the original

I also had some logitech speakers with sub which gives a really good deep bass sound especially when you blast the rocks

Got the marquee light going to show off the original 40yr old marquee which looks awesome and a repro bezel from Noodleshirt

To finish off I will light up the coin slots and also the LED cone start buttons which at the moment are wired to credit and start

With regard to the LED cone buttons I do need help with what voltage these are and the best way to power them , I did read somewhere that they need to be around 2-3v ??

Any info or advice on this would be appreciated

Wow great cab and nice work!

My Asteroids I found gutted so I have AAE’d it too with a 19 inch PC CRT. Looks great.

I am about to do the same thing with the lighted cone buttons.

There’s a few options for you but this is the easiest I have found. Find a Logitech K120 USB keyboard. Simply remove the controller board from inside. Remove the old keyboard LED’s and solder wires to your Atari cone buttons. The k120 board puts out the perfect voltage for the cone buttons without resistors etc

I have not wired mine up yet so check voltage first but it should be all good. I found a video on YouTube named hacking a Logitech k120 or the like.

Other options include little PCB’s that seem impossible to find like the iPac board for LED’s, modifying other USB keyboards and other long discontinued LED boards for use with MAME.

The buttons use a 5 volt LED mate. Just be careful they are easy to kill if you wire them up wrong.

You can now get an interface for MAME to run the original XY-monitor in there, with a MAME PC or even RaspberryPi running it. Nothing is as nice as a real vector monitor, so if you still have the screen, this could be an option to get it back to a true vector setup again, without having to repair all the boards.

Sounds good - do you have some more info on that? Cheers
