williams tic-tac-toe 1959 woodrail

sigh..not another project.

some background on this game..it was 1st offered to me about 12 years ago by a couple who were thinking about selling the game..we went back and forth but in the end they decided about keeping it as they had the game since 1974.

so i kept their details and about 2 years after the initial correspondence i dropped them another email..since then they had moved to new zealand, so that was the end of that.

so last week on a spurr i checked an old email account and there was an email from this couple asking if i would be still interested in the game, so once again emails were exchanged and photos were sent and a time was agreed to this morning..so off to sydney i go.

asking the history they said that when they first got married in england in 1974 they bought the game, then moved to australia, then to new zealand, back to sydney, back to new zealand again..then finally back to sydney where they were going to downsize.

so the last thing i needed was another project but for $200 it was just too good to pass up and woodrails are always tough to find..so the game is now in the shed and in the queue..will take photos later on today..

backglass is mint, playfield is nice and small areas will need to be touched up..playfield plastics are available from pinball rescue so will order them..cab is painted black but the original design is under and with some luck will be able to get it off without disturbing the original paint.

having a quick look over the game appears complete less the large bell in the head..

not too sure when i will make a start on her as still to finish egg head cab and oklahoma mechanics.

so just shows you, there are still games out there to be discovered in the wild..

Well you can't really complain as you do keep finding them and buying them :)

But having said that, how could you let it go after that history. I look forward to yet another restoration thread from yourself.

not complaining trev, to be honest i got to sutherland and nearly turned around..glad i didn't though..something i didn't mention was while we were loading the game into my wagon

there were a fair few people that gathered around to look..kept thinking 'nobody please bring up how collectable these are' i still can't believe the owners didn't do any research on what

they could of sold the game for.

strange thing is have cleaned out the shed over the past month..and filled it back up this week <_<

game set up on legs, have sat next to volley to show how short these games are (yes has correct length legs)

playfield is okay for a game that is 57 years old..2 bonus posts that will come out..as mentioned pinball rescue have made repro plastics, so just sent a sms to lee to send a set down

Really good nic for a machine that's 57 years old. Well done on the pick up, $200 is just an amazing price. Leaves plenty of room to fix it up perfectly. As to it being made in Ireland, so was the Titanic and look at the workmanship on that one!:o

Man I love the old EM's and woodrails...I cannot say that often enough. One thing I've never liked are the tiny old school flippers. If I had one I'd never change it though as they perfectly match the machine.

agree brad..and i am sure that this game will be a skidder to play but it has such a wonderful background story..

just for now she will need to wait her turn, will start the ground up resto next spring.

have to finish egg head and oklahoma first.

though have ordered repro plastics from pinball rescue and internal stainless steel rails.

in the meantime will go about gathering all the parts to have on hand for september.

I modelled my virtual pin using a merging of woodrail and 70's gottliebs.

I reckon I would spend more time just looking at this machine than playing it. Something about the over aesthetic just wins me over. They're like an antique piece of furniture that you can simply appreciate by looking at it.

Beautiful artwork, interesting to see the scoring in 100 thousand & 1 million increments.

Seems unusual for this era yeah?

not at all..almost all the pre score reel backglass scored 'big points' so millions went back to the 1940's

even when the very first score reel pinballs came in (mid 1950's) they had so many false zeros on the end of the reels they were still scoring in the millions..it wasn't until gottlieb developed the first multi player game in 1955 that they went back to 3 reels per player..this would of been to keep the costs down as making multi player games would of blown the budget.

Curious, showing my ignorance once again. So they kind of come full circle with the big scoring DMD's now.

Got to love the history & development of these pieces of functional art. I must admit aesthetically

I find some of the old gottlieb EM's streets ahead of the newer machines in general. I have a Bronco next to a DMD & 2 very nice SS Bally's

& Bronco just looks better full stop. Could be just me, my eyes aren't what they used to be lol
