Nominated by gamers: John73 and RMacauley

ROM: bnj

Game Story:

Join "Jumpin' John" as he goes cruisin' up the road bumping, jumping, and smashing cars. Aside from the cars, you must avoid the sides of the road, breaks in the road which are usually over water, and rocks in the road which can sometimes be dumped by certain vehicles. Each level is based on a season Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter except the first level which seems to have no name. When you finish a level, you will pull up to a gas pump that has an icon showing the next level. A flowering tree shows Spring is coming up, a life preserver indicates Summer, a tree with no leaves says Fall is next, and a snowman means Winter is on the way.

Score Submissions:

Please make a new post for each score you post, with your score as the first line of your post, along with a screen shot showing your score and initials.

This game finishes Sunday 19 June 2016, 7pm Sydney time, Australia.

Please make sure your settings are as above. No continues are allowed when submitting a score and must be played from the beginning of the game. No cheats allowed!

I'm assuming brubber is OK. I actually had a 50K run so it's worth a post (at least to me). I want to say my PB is around 200K, but for the life of me I don't recall how I played enough to get that score.

Yes brubber is OK. How come you can't play bnj?

Well it's easy now, you've got 17 days to work it out again, and then double your score ... time for you to jump ... :026:

I could not readily locate bnj and already had brubber. bnj is a clone of brubber no? Anyway, I'll look around some more for bnj. I don't suspect I'll have too much of a go on this one as I find it crazy frustrating. No matter what I do the cars come at me. If I jump, the cars come at me. If I don't jump, the cars come at me. If I speed up, slow down... well, the cars come at me.

I do recall reading a guide or run down from @John73 at some point in the past (few years ago or so). It was thorough and well written, though when I tried to put the suggestions in place... the cars ran into me. :)

What version of MAME are you using? I just posted on TG issues I'm having with the BNJ ROM using MAME .150.

BRUBBER is actually the original ROM, BNJ is a clone - but as it was released as BNJ in the USA that is why TG accepts it for their record keeping AFAIK.

One of these days I'll write a guide to playing it - it's very hard to put into words though. I'm not sure what it is, I find this game easy to play to an extent. Barra tried explaining to me how to play Galaga better, but bugger me if I can do it. I've watched him play, and watched what he was explaining to do - but the bullets in Galaga just follow me regardless and I for the life of me can not replicate what he is telling me to do - the same issue you seem to have with BNJ. One of the mysteries of life I guess.

No problems with that. One hand behind the back while I play this. I hope you don't want video proof of my score though, because I doubt you'll want to see what I'm using to hit the jump button with :redface HINT: Viagra is your friend.

Seems to me your joystick doesn't work. Did you notice you couldn't move your car!

On the subject of Burnin' Rubber being okay to play - @RMacauley - have you managed to get your Burnin' Rubber PCB in a cabinet yet? My score increased dramatically when I got on a real cabinet instead of using a keyboard. Be interesting to see how much you improve if you have time in the next two weeks to play this.

Haha. If that were only the case!

@John73 for this game I used .106 (I posted this a moment ago but the post disappeared - odd).

Do you get an error message when trying to play with the BNJ ROM?

Not that it I think it matters, I've played both ROM's and as far as I can tell there is no difference.

I don't have bnj and was unable to readily locate it. I only have brubber so I'm not able to comment further on the error message. I can say that I did not receive any error message with brubber. I don't suspect this is of much assistance.

Still in the box where it's been since it arrived. Slack I know.

Had a quick game on BnJ at PAPA HQ in Pittsburgh back in April. Don't know the settings but got about 250K and walked away. Just felt like killing a few minutes.

BnJ was the game that was a last minute swap in my nominations. Originally picked it then thought "not a good idea. Playing for 2nd here." Then at the last second decided bugger it and put BnJ back in.

any way you slice it this is a great game. Even when you mess up the 50k bonus you can still have fun marauding.

I'm in complete awe of John's WR score on this, how long do ytou play for 5mill @John73 ?

217,612 i lose all my lives on screens 6 and 7

About 3½ hours. Crappy video can be found here: http://www.twingalaxies.com/showthread.php/139598

Last pattern 152, 102 of which were 50k perfect patterns for 5.1 million points of the final 5,869,264

217,612 i lose all my lives on screens 6 and 7

That's a decent score considering you probably haven't touched this game in a while. Remembering that this game has unique patterns from 1 to 3 only, and then patterns 4 thru 8 just repeat, it's probably better to just practice getting through patterns 4 to 8, don't worry about going for the 50k until you can comfortably pass these levels. Once you are comfortable with these, it's just a matter of time before you'll crack 1,000,000 because of all the free cars you get. Continues can't be used for a submitted score, but no harm in using continues to learn the patterns.

While smashing cars into the wall is lots of fun, it can be dangerous until you really work out how your car reacts to each of the different cars. Even when I mess up a pattern, I don't generally go on a massive smash fest because of the dangers of losing a life.

Why does the first level not have any music and a weird jumping noise? But the second u finish first level it's normal sounds..

Think i just figured it out. appears if u credit up and start a game too quick after loading the game. it has that weird glitch.

Yep that's exactly what causes it, though last time we played someone else had sound issues and this didn't remedy the problem. Make sure you wait for the "boing" noise then credit up, it's very annoying with the sound glitch.

would like to get better at this game, i'm sure there's some bonuses to be had somewhere.

50k bonus for completing a pattern without killing another car. It's ok if dump trucks kill other cars though. I wouldn't say this is a tip, it is pretty much common knowledge so I don't think sharing at this point in the MGL should cause issues :)

Killing no cars is probably easier said than done though. But if you look at it this way, you start with 3 lives, you get a bonus life every 30k (up to 990k) - so if you sacrifice one life to get the 50k on each of the first 3 patterns then your score will be 152k or so - you will have lost 3 lives, but gained 5. This sort of play is the way to get a big score, up to 1,000,000 with practice. But for really big scores, you can't sacrifice lives for the 50k. So I guess this is an early tip, when learning, don't worry about sacrificing cars - you want the 50k bonuses. If/when you score 1mil, that's the time to refine your game play to not sacrifice lives.
