LAI Tekken 2 to TMNT conversion **Pic heavy**

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I recently grabbed a LAI generic cab that had Tekken 2 in it, with the idea of converting it to a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2p version for my wife's upcoming birthday. Turtles, Simpsons, Burgertime and DK being her favourites, it came down to Turtles being the most available. Had toyed with the idea of grabbing an original 4p LAI TMNT, but don't have a heap of space, and will most likely only be played by 2 people 99 percent of the time anyway. I also had a couple of weeks time and needed a quick project, so here it is?..

Orignal for sale Ad photos:

Dusty but no major damage:

Home safe and sound (thanks for the Delivery Tony if you're on here!?).

Marquee lighting no good. Bunch of overspray on the sides.

Some grubby old paint peeling off front of control panel.

Needs a good wipe down and vacc out, then hit that overspray.

Closeup of taking off old clear coat or dark red painted over control panel.

It may have been for quick resale or something (maybe to stop scratching), but the panel is perfect underneath.

Certainly wasn't covering graffiti or damage. Peels off slowly with a rubber washing up glove and a bit of elbow grease.

Fluoro light starter stuffed. Bent pin nearly fell right off when taking it out.

Can see where it stained the ends of the Fluoro tube too, so in with new starter and tube.

Previous owner said Marquee hadn't lit in 8 years and was told it couldn't be fixed.

Removed glass and cleaned, flipped back to original side.

Glass had been turned around to reverse and hide the writing "Leisure and Allied Industries" by the most recent vendor.

Removed their faded business card that was also behind glass.

Marquee working 1st go with new tube and starter.

Alright now fast forward to a couple of weeks later and parts have arrived.

Onto the control panel, as for this I need to switch back to skills (and bodges) from my time as a spray painter another lifetime ago (left the job over 15 years ago). This part Id looked up online for examples but couldn't find many with pictures, so hopefully it will help someone that hasn't worked with BOG/ resin fillers before. In my head if this failed, I would just get a new control panel made up, so nothing lost but time. I already had the right filler (something that bonds to metal, plastic and paint) and only needed to grab a new sanding block and heavy grit paper.

Sometimes Im very thorough, and sometimes Im impatient?. tonight I was thoroughly impatient!

I needed to cover the button 5 and 6 holes for both players. TMNT is only a 2 button game, but if it works out, I plan to keep 4 buttons per player so Tekken and other similar era games would be possible quick swap overs to keep this cab flexible. I could have taken the control panel to have the holes welded up (which could shrink spots) or use a metal glue (which could take days to dry), so I used a bodge used on motorbikes years back. Again - if this didn't work out I was happy to cut my losses and get a new panel cut.

Here's my use of industrial signage as backing plates!

You have to get the kind that have a very strong adhesive, and a metal strip inside them to stop flex (and take the heat of the curing filler).

http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp200/samjohnsonsound/LAI%20TEKKEN%20TO%20TMNT/006%20INDUSTRIAL%20SIGNAGE_zpszbk7hv56.jpg"]http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp200/samjohnsonsound/LAI%20TEKKEN%20TO%20TMNT/006%20INDUSTRIAL%20SIGNAGE_zpszbk7hv56.jpg

Flip panel over and clean glue out of holes and scuff up top of control panel where filler will go.

Plenty of info on the net about mixing and applying filler/ BOG. I will just say grab a resin type filler for this, put more than enough on and try to apply it flat as possible.

http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp200/samjohnsonsound/LAI%20TEKKEN%20TO%20TMNT/007%20BOG_zpsj0xeo6tk.jpg"]http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp200/samjohnsonsound/LAI%20TEKKEN%20TO%20TMNT/007%20BOG_zpsj0xeo6tk.jpg

Make sure you have a sanding block (this one came with 5 grades of sandpaper for 5 bucks) and try to sand crosshatched across the filler, occasionally sanding vert/ hori to not leave any ridges. Notice the X shaped marks over the filler. This will help keep it flatter and "feather" the edges of filler. Fading or feathering the edges is important (especially when painting) even when applying vinyl sticker over it (Id assumed from doing auto decals in the past). If not done right you will easily see the edge of the repair when done, even in Matt gloss.

Called it a night at around 2am.

Now sanded flat enough, scuff the rest of control panel for better CPO adhesion. Prepped and cleaned - no paint so warm soapy water will do.

http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp200/samjohnsonsound/LAI%20TEKKEN%20TO%20TMNT/009%20SANDED%20AND%20PREPPED_zpsmpf79s6j.jpg"]http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp200/samjohnsonsound/LAI%20TEKKEN%20TO%20TMNT/009%20SANDED%20AND%20PREPPED_zpsmpf79s6j.jpg

CPO applied using kitchen sponge folded in half to give the vinyl a "soft push" as its going down for no bubbles.

Worked a treat.

Razored out holes and chucked in original MCA buttons and a couple of new Player start buttons.

These don't have to be crazy neat with MCA as they are well covered. The joystick holes take your time and heat if necessary with hairdryer to soften.

New Marquee!

Thanks again to Carson @MamePatrol for the great CPO and marquee.

Now onto the game board. Thanks to @GameDude in Brisbane for looking after me on this one.

Also big thanks to Ro @taito for dropping by to double check a couple of pinouts for me too?. Im just as likely to get this far into a project and fry a game board being so focused on the aesthetics was my thought. Fired up first go no worries!

Here's my wife tearing it up on her new machine within an hour of first booting it up!

All came together quickly (24 hrs) after a month of tracking the bits.

Looks great! Well done!

Awesome job Sam!

I reckon that cab had your name on it and was just begging for a TMNT game board!

Nice one! You got some great restoring skills there!

Great tips on filling up unwanted button holes.

Cheers,

Ro

Stoked with the cab yep. Thanks for the push… these things are rock solid!

Good to finally have a full sized cab at home too (3 lowboys and a Hankin cocktail up till now).

Forgot to give a shout out to Darren @OLDS2010 for helping me out with some MCA bits too.

Nice work. Nice lowboys too!

Cheers NMD.

Gotta confess… the lowboys are still my favourites.

That and my Hankin cocktail, I guess they were the ones I grew up playing.

Control panel on the Moon Patrol lowboy is next.

Go the woodys!
