Early 80's LAI Cocktail Cabs

Recommended Posts

I picked up a couple of LAI cocktail cabs in package deal last year. These are the cabs I remember playing as a kid and was pretty happy to find a couple in such good nick. Glass is great, cabs are straight and laminate is coming away in couple of spots but easily fixed. PCBs in them are Taito Elevator Action and a bootleg Pengo . Both machines powered up, could play a game on Elevator Action, Pengo had no harness but that machines monitor display white. The control panels are rough, one coin box is missing and one has a broken door hinge.

This will be staying under the glass for a bit of history.

Tested the second monitor on a multi board when I got home, it is in need of adjustment but working fine and the both will need a service anyway. Had a look at the LAI plates and turns out they have consecutive serial numbers. The guy I got them off did mention he got them new to put in his shop in Kallangur.

I was going to leave these alone while working on the pinball I picked up at the same time, but can?t help myself. Plan do one up for now to replace my current LAI horizontal cocktail that looks fairly average compared to these. I?m going use the straightest cab and rewire it for Jamma . Elevator Action with a will go back in with an adaptor along with a 619 in 1. Has anyone got pics on how they originally mounted the 3 tier boards in the cab. The way this one was done works fine but looks less than factory.

The table top has been cut so the monitor can be in horizontal orientation and has gaps that I will make some inserts to cover.

Will be stripping and painting all metal parts, not sure if I?ll cut another hole in the control panels or get some reproduced. But I am looking to put back the original LAI overlay or something similar from around that time.

I got the cab back during the week from getting the monitor serviced. Stripped it down for a clean.

Polished, painted and cleaned parts from inside the cab and reassembled. I got a Happ PCB holder for the Elevator Action board, that was cut down to fit.

There is a micro switch missing on the coin mech but I am not sure what type it is. None of the ones I have handy would be triggered by the coin/mech action. Anyone know what switch fit this?

I also sold the second cocktail to a mate on the weekend. Its his first machine and I was happy to help get him started.

The plan was to make this a 3 button setup, cut into the original control panel and get an overlay done. I sent a CAD file of the LAI CPO off to @MamePatrol so he could reproduce it. It was great dealing with him and he also stitched together a pinball plastic that was broken into 5 pieces and did up a sticker. I?ll be using Noodleshirt again for sure.

But when it came down to stripping the CPO and really looked at, it didn?t need it. As I wasn?t doing anything to the exterior of the cab except a wipe down and cleaning rust off the bolts a new overlay would look out of place. The second cab control panels already had a second hole cut in and they were in better condition so I?ll be using them. The new overlays won?t be wasted , they?ll be going on another LAI cab that has homemade control panels.

I got onto rewiring the cab. Put a connector between the player controls and the harness so the control panels can be taken off the cab. There already was a small hole drilled in the coin slot so installed a small switch that will add credits.

The original joysticks were put back in, they worked and fitted under the glass and then added new buttons. I picked up a Mag Stik plus off of @namestepat today, thanks mate, and will be cutting down the shaft and adding a ball top in the near future and putting that in the cab. Will see how it plays, but like the ease of changing between 4 and 8 way. Cleaned the rust off all bolts with the drill and put the panel back in. Then cleaned and painted the leg bolts as the legs are in great condition.

One more thing to do was to cut out some inserts to fill the gaps created when the originally changed the cab from vert to horz. Used some thick cardboard and scanned the laminate with the intention of making the inserts look like the laminate. Tried a few prints but couldn?t get the colour to match and it didn?t blend it. In the end just ran with black and I like it.

This basically ended up just as a clean and rewire of a generic cab, but that?s all it needed.

Looks pretty damn good for a generic cocktail.

I agree it looks good. But with the body of these made out of chipboard, this one must have had an easy life.
