BIG Trev
I've been trying my replacement boards and it appears my mpu isn't working. I've tried another mpu and it works. The red light comes on and stays on could this be a lack of clock signal? Could this be the crystal? I have replaced the 6802 and the 6821s. Can I check the crystal with a multimeter or will I need a scope? Cheers Trev. Nope not the crystal. BIG Trev
The sound board wasn't working either but I managed to get a spare board I had been rebuilding working. I just need a set of sound roms for it. The power board I'd started fixing now works so I'm just short an mpu. I put the mpu that I've got put aside for the Shark in it and it plays well. There are just a few lamps out and it needs a good clean. The displays were dull but with use have brightened up well and all work fine. As for the playfield apart from a clean it needs three inserts glued back in. I'll post more pics as I go through it. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/06/82c44c837e6f22e06bad9d72b2e70aec.jpg Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk

Fire_Power
If your clock circuit is running you should see about 2 to 3 V on pins 37 and 38 of the cpu. If you meter measures frequency you should be able to see it here too. Check pin 40 is about 4.5V for the reset circuits too. Check for any activity on the address lines - pins 9-20 and 22-25 Check for any activity on data line - pins 26-33 This should give you an idea of where to look next. BIG Trev
off topic I know but are you building a Dalek too Trev? I've had that for a long time too. It's a kiddie ride made by Edwin Hall in the UK. I had it shipped over back on 1995. They're quite rare as only 50 were made and I was told that this one came off a truck that had around 20 of them going to the tip. It's missing the mechanism that rotates it but I have all the electrics for the sound, lights and the 8 track tape deck with the original tape. I'm thinking of putting it on old wheel chair motors and having a joystick and small lcd screen inside with a camera mounted on the outside somewhere. There's still a way to go on this one. Here's a pic of my BIG project...http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/06/8d20ff1adda4ae92cf8cc706f46f591f.jpg It's a 1923 steam powered truck. I'm part way there with this too. I might live long enough to get it all done... Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk

BIG Trev
There's always a lot of old parts in these machines. I think the coil is still useable. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/06/b509b35c957c6d9da775504b606b1759.jpg It's really clean under the playfield. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/06/a62438c35c11c77e2c9a62950c970fc4.jpg Just a couple of minor bits missing. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/06/41d12a11b34683de9db0717619516c06.jpg Does anyone know this guy? http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/06/47fb84c81e36da5e4a3146a64d3d33e6.jpg Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk

Gemini2544
I'd be very surprised if it's the crystal, any number of problems can stop an MPU board from booting. Have you checked the voltages going to the the board. Start with the basics or you'll just make things worse.
BIG Trev
Yes I've checked the supply voltages I plugged in another mpu and it worked fine I'm going to replace headers ic sockets and electrolytic caps and socket all the ics. The ic sockets on these boards are known to cause problems. Cheers Trev. Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk
Fire_Power
Probably better to do your testing before lots of replacement of bits. You may introduce more problems than were present. I think it's a 680x processor, so read any of the WMS sys 3-7 guides in the areas of mpu testing. It'll be quite similar and the fault finding techniques for a non booting mpu are the same. Administrators furballx Posted August 9, 2015 Administrators Share Posted August 9, 2015 Don't know the guy himself, but the Pinball Doctor was located in Prospect (Blacktown?), Western Sydney on the Great Western Highway almost opposite Village Grand Prix in the early 90's. I went in there are few times, but no way I could afford a pin then as a starving student. I think the name might be used by someone else now tho??? BIG Trev
I stripped the playfield today to give it a good clean and glued three inserts back in that had fallen out. The whole machine needs a good clean and I'll be getting a new glass for it. Luckily there are no drop targets or decals on the pop bumpers so that'll make things a bit easier. BIG Trev
I've cleaned the playfield and started re assembling it. I'm going to get new white posts for it as the old ones have yellowed a bit. I've put all new pop bumper plastic pieces on and new flippers so it'll be a bit brighter and whiter. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/16/502edbb9d93c11a645123919d92b8ba3.jpg You can see the difference in colour on the playfield below the left hand flipper where the playfield hasn't faded. I'm going to leave this for now. I might have a go at restoring the spare playfield at a later date. I'm not sure what to do about these? Are new ones available? http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/16/0c37c942016895a642e04b0e4acc3979.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/16/984423cd1e0b40437d0f93571640bb49.jpg I might see if I can get them chromed? Homepin
You won't get new ones but it should be easy to get them plated. I would opt for nickle plating as it isn't quite as bright as chrome, it's tough and reasonably cheap and also easier to get done as it is environmentally friendly. BIG Trev
The only problem is I have to go to Newcastle to get nickle done and I can get chrome done in Tamworth. I'll see, I have to get some gold chrome done on aluminum for the Dalek so I might take them at the same time. I could always post them I suppose? I had them zinc plate on the ESB but I'm not overly happy with them. Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk
Homepin
I would be happy with chrome just that it's usually harder to get done. If you can locally go for it - BLING away..:D
BIG Trev
Nickle does have that nice vintage look to it though? Hmmmm. Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk
pauly540
Have you considered one of these DIY kits? http://janekits.com.au/product-category/electroplating-kits/nickel-kits/ Pricey, but might work out cheaper in the long run for lots of parts. I'm thinking about buying the zinc kit for under playfield parts.
BIG Trev
I cheated on the MPU. I changed all the ICs (some were missing anyway) , ic sockets, electrolytic caps, headers and new Roms from skybeaux. I only have a $10 multimeter that's starting to play up for testing so I took the easy way out. But the MPU is working and so is the sound board after a new Rom from Ken. The display connector on the MPU needs replacing too that's next. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/20/1ac5206e31410dc59f3672915901d2e8.jpg Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk Edited August 21, 2015 by BIG Trev
BIG Trev
I've been cleaning bits today. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/20/9175fc3664cf5ddb8a32226444b1f296.jpg And I've stripped the legs and hinges off for powder coating and plating. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/20/82e024b13f6531ad5d8147030314061c.jpg The Shark legs are there too along with some spare parts. I've ordered new posts for the playfield. I polished the shooter knob and put new flipper buttons, credit button and shooter beehive on the cabinet after a wipe over with MrSheen. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/20/f370e95532d490ce084d089a66f2a6d3.jpg Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk
