From a Dirty Girl to a Cosmic Princess

Recommended Posts

Hey AA, it's been a while waiting but I'm now started into restoring the dignity of my Cosmic Princess.

I got lucky on Australia Day and scored with a Dirty Girl. She had been sitting in a garage for a few years and the years hadn't been kind. On first inspection she didn't boot but I was itching to get my first project pin. The deal was done at $300.

NB that's me and the previous owner shaking hands in front of the Dirty Girl- don't get confused!!!

I was excited, so I got her back to my place as quick as I could. Two mates- @Zzap and Ratanak helped me make her at home.

Once we were alone I had to check for cooties. Oh dear, the ball swirl and planking made this Princess look like a werewolf! She needed some major work with some Nair and a Lady Remington.

Luckily the back glass was quite good

Down below didn't look too good...She musta had some kids along the way cause her skin was pretty thin in places. It's gonna take more than a visit to the Ponds Institute to fix the major blow-out around her star which has stretched out to a grizzled hole.

Such is my nature, I wanted to clean her right away. I tried all manor of cleaners but she only responded to anointment with Big Kev's Orange Goo Remover and Magic Eraser. I started by cleaning up her bikini line.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/30/3b9318ac78419e312a2f3b6a33022479.jpg

That's where things got left for 6 months. Every now and then I could hear her weeping from the neglect. Bitterly cold nights of -7 degrees don't help so the back glass was stored inside.

Now spring has sprung my interest once again has turned to....... the Princess.

As harsh as it sounds, I was gonna have to strip her!

Someone has been a bit rough previously cause she had got stuck on the shaft! I couldn't get the flipper bat off no matter what I tried.

I put out the call to the VCP and @Chexfxdx came to the rescue.

Now with the insides properly removed I can get a close up look. Not as bad as I thought, more attention from Big Kev (RIP) and she's coming up a treat.

I've decided to the best job that I can on this old girl.....yes I'm gonna go anal! ;-)

Parts are on order from The Pinball Resource, thanks for the tip @illawarra_steelers.

Next stop is to get some scans done of the playfield, backglass and plastics with help from another mate @shaneo.

Anyone want a copy?

Cheers

Z

Git wise sucker! (as BA would oft say) Now you've got her cleaned, get something down to protect what's left - I can't help - you saw how many parts the compressor was in and it's in more now.

If you are thinking KBS then you know what it does to some paints, inks, water slide decals etc.

You've not got too many colors and they are all primary. Patch the divots, mask off a color at a time starting with the light ones and away it goes.

Do consider the option of scanning and cutting mask from scans you print.

I would be more concerned about tackling the cab, well the bit that's missing as it won't be easy to match.

Thanks @shaneo, cleanings not yet finished, hopefully it's done tomorrow. That problem with the head box is nothing, I can match that easy with spare pack! :-))

I forgot to take lotsa photos six months back when I got all the electronics working.

At first this DG didn't boot. Resoldering dry joints, replacing transistors in display boards

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/01/b84f7e0ff84d23278541e719f645ed32.jpg and sending the acid damaged MPU to @Skybeaux fixed that.

The playfield clean is going well but the line between cleaning off swirl and rubbing off paint is so fine. Getting this DG clean is priority one and results are looking good.

A few touch ups may be in order.....;-) Z

Playfield cleaning is just about done.

As it's been pointed out, colour matching to this is gonna be almost impossible. All I can do is try my best and see if a paint pro can help.

The colour is so much more vibrant now that if all I did now was add clear coat, it would be a huge improvement on where I started.

In some places I've gone too far but overall it looks so much better without all the swirl. I'm really happy how this DG has scrubbed up! [emoji2] Z

Sooooo after a long amount of time I've now almost finished my restore. Here's a pic of where things stand. I will add more photos next time I'm on line on a PC.

Thanks again to @Savage for his hard work on the playfield restore. Thanks to Pintech Steve Hyde for help with a few parts and fault finding after I made mistakes when hooking up the playfield. Thanks to @andtanfor lots of buffing up the metal work till its nice and shiny.

Still a few small bits to fix but this Dirty Girl has been restored to a Cosmic Princess. Z http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161018/702b8c107955ca9c8c9fb1d5e5ca105a.jpg

From a Dirty Girl to a Cosmic Princess

Awesome. Great job.

Just finishing mine off too. Notice led vs incandescent.

Just need to find new yellow pop caps.

Few more switch adjustments and done.
