Time to start on the next game. This time it’s a sad looking Pac-Man, that had a Ms-Pac-Man PCB (Which is in fact a Pac-Man PCB with a daughter card and rom change) and a Ms-Pac-Man marquee. The sides of the cab have been painted yellow over the artwork, so this will need to be replaced. The PCB was missing the Sync Bus Controller, and a number of legs on the VRAM Addresser came off in the socket when I removed this IC. Luckily I had purchased a replacement set some time back, so this wasn’t an issue. I replaced the sockets for both these IC’s and burnt new Pac-Man roms and the board fired right up.

The cab will be completely stripped down and all metal parts repainted. The cab will also get new T-moulding, a paint job and new art.

On to the monitor. From the looks of it, this monitor hasn’t been touched since first installed at the factory. The monitor is a WG4600, which I don’t particularly like. The tube has considerable screen burn, and when I plugged the Pac PCB into it the colours were very washed out. I’m considering a tube swap, or will attempt a tube rejuvenation, but considering the burn, a new tube may be a better option.

The monitor was covered in dirt, so outside and ready for a shower.

Like most early Midway games, the DC regulation was done on the PCB itself, so no DC supply in the cab, just AC transformers for the various voltages the game uses. Like the monitor, I’m un-decided whether I’ll convert the PCB to run straight on DC and fit a switch mode supply, or continue to keep the cab as-is. There are pros and cons to both. One pro is I have a number of bootleg Pac-Man boards which run directly from DC, so it would enable me to use these boards if required. I have another Pac-Man cab which I did convert to DC, but I’ll make that decision when the time comes.

The transformer assembly.

The game completely stripped and parts laid out. I plan to work on the monitor first, so once this is done, I’ll post a second update.

I didn't do very much on the Pac-Man today, just too busy around the house. I did put the B & K 470 on the tube to see what I had. As can be seen from the pictures both the Red and Blue guns are showing poor emissions, which explain the poor picture I was getting. Considering the screen burn, this tube has had it's day and will be binned.

Time for a new monitor for this Pac-Man.

I love cool gadgets. Awesome :)

They do come in handy :)

I also have some leakage on the Blue gun, so no use trying to do anything with this tube. Considering the game, it doesn't surprise me, as it sure got a work out during its life.

Vector monitor repair and CRT rejuvenation. You're a handy man to know John :)

Cheers mate! :) I guess having a life long interest in these old games has helped. Actually, the CRT rejuvenator is a more recent addition to my test equipment.

keen to see how the cab turns out too! thats a real shame about the side art getting obliterated, but might still intact be under the new paint.

how about some closeup pics of your power supply thingumebob with the joystickwatchamecallit and the hoojeewatsits on the other side ?

I think the side art had the typical hand spot wear, so the OP painted over it to make look decent. This restoration is currently on hold, as I've just been too busy these last few weeks.

Now... what were those pictures you wanted again?? ;)

and, uhh, some of that teaser over the back there....:)

Oh, that thingumebob :)

That's my very old self made power supply, that I've used for a very long time.

The harness pin-out is so old, that only a few Ops would remember it (Gottlieb 38 way). This was before JAMMA and the days when Ops would make up their own harness plugs and pin-outs. I use to deal a lot with Gottlieb in Sydney, so used their particular pin-out.

Basically standard outputs of +5V, +12V, -5V and 0V. The supply has gone from 5A, 7A, 12A originally, to 15A now (5V line) Standard 8 way joystick, credit button, and 3 buttons for fire, jump, shield, etc. The 2 IEC output are for 240VAC and 110VAC (Isolated) I used these when repairing power supplies, and when repairing power supplies was economical.

The little 8"colour monitor is a Toei and came out of a poker machine. This was one of 3 that were fitted to the game. I got this monitor from Coin op Kev a long time ago, and he used the same monitors on his test bench. Just don't touch the back when it's running! :D

The pcb in the background is an old Zig Zag, which I use when repairing monitors.

The other picture is of my Sinister cockpit, that was working when placed into storage, but hasn't been fired since. I'll get to it one day, but will likely wait until I drag the Sinistar upright in and work on them both together.

I never knew they made a cockpit sinistar! Very cool. Not my cup of tea as a game, I was never very good at it, kind of like defender, the the sinistar sounds are permanently burned into my memory as a background noise in the arcade.

Yeah, it's very much like Defender Brad, I don't last very long on either, but love playing them just the same. I actually owned 2 Sinistar cockpits at one point, both had consecutive serial numbers :)

Any updates on this one mate?

Sadly no. I need a few more parts, plus I plan to completely replace the monitor in Pac-Man, so it's been moved back in the queue a few times now. I'm currently working on an Asteroids and 2 x Centipedes at the moment.
