Broken 25pin IDC 0.100" connector

Jesder

Question

I decided to remove the solenoid driver board from my Fireball tonight to investigate an issue with the return gate.

I noticed something odd about the J3 connector - to be specific, 1 wire missing from the connector but connected directly to the pin.

I removed the connector and found that the connector itself was broken in two. Where it had broken, that wire was now soldered directly to the pin. This pin is for one of the mushroom bumpers, so isn't related to the gate, but I'm keen to fix this connector anyway. On a closer look at that broken section it was black on one side, so possibly it had burnt hot at some point in the past before being hacked into a working state again?

It's an IDC type. 25 pin and 0.100" gauge.

A quick search has turned up no results for a 25 pin IDC. In fact I could only find 0.156" connectors (but none in that length).

Any ideas on where to source a 25pin 0.100" IDC?

That's not IDC though. No doubt it's an acceptable substitute.

Found this tucked away at Marcospex http://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/CF10025 - I imagine it's basically the same thing (no lock though - which isn't needed here anyway).

Was hoping to put one of my new Mascon tools to use here ;)

Not IDC and not 25 pin, but other than that ... a cheap source of 0.1" bits

http://www.taydaelectronics.com/connectors-sockets/wafer-housing-crimp-terminal/serie-2500-2-54mm.html

BTW many people would recommend against IDC, prob wont matter for a fresh rework on a home use pin, after all the old one has mostly lasted this long :)

So you would use multiple connectors to to make up the correct pin count?

Not sure on the advantages / disadvantages of IDC - but seems easier to redo the connector instead of crimping 25 pins;)

Yeah yeah, I'm being lazy :p

In desperate times yes, but I wouldn't like it or admit to it on a public forum!

Advantages - quick, easy and fast to make and hence cheap - particularly if you're doing heaps of them. Suit lazy folk  Good for running "through" wires

Disadvantages - not as robust, not as reliable, don't look as good

Yeah yeah, I'm being lazy :p

Yeah :lol

Thanks for the links Andy.

I went and purchased a proper crimping tool today in preparation for redoing the connector this weekend. I sourced a connector and pins (not the IDC type), so I'll put my mascon tool back on the shelf for another day.

In other news, I used my new Tumbler for the first time today - really impressed with the results :D

Get a longer one and cut it down to size.
