NES Famicom Hybrid console

Hey guys,

 

Its been a while since I have created a guide so here goes.

I recently purchased a box of random consoles. One of them happened to be a US NTSC NES console. I know that this could be an issue selling it on as some PAL games would not like to play nice on it so I decided to keep it.

Looking on another forum (sorry admins!) I found a help thread for someone adding a famicom slot to a NES. This gave me the idea to try it myself and seeing that I had the spare NTSC NES this would be a perfect candidate. I also had a could of dead famicom motherboards so I could leach the cart connector from one of those.

So lets get started.

 

First thing is to desolder the Famicom cart slot ready for use in the NES. Once desoldered you need to attach wires to each of the pins. I used IDE cable as I have a huge roll of it. This is a bit of a tedious task but once you get started it moved on very quick

Once you have all the wires soldered to each of the 60 pins its time to start soldering the other end of the wires to the NES motherboard. I am assuming that you already know how to remove the motherboard from the case. I used the following PDF as a map to which pins need to be soldered to which points on the NES.

There are a couple of errors with this PDF file. It states that pins 31 and 16 need to be connected to clock and EXP0 respectively on the NES. This is not correct and needs to be connected to 5V for pin 31 and ground for pin 16. Also pins 53 and 54 on the famicom and switched around in the PDF. Other than that this is fine.

The soldering task begins. all the solder points on you can see here are actually connected to the other side pins from 37-72 of the NES.

Now the back row of pins is complete onto soldering for pins 1 to 36

Pins 1 to 36 are a little trickier as you need to use a meter to buzz out the points where to solder. Take your time. a few of the points you actually solder directly to the legs of the ram modules.

Now everything is soldered into place. Just double check you have not shorted any pins out by accident.

Now for the test. Here we go!!

SUCCESS!! Nice clear picture and NO JAIL BARS!! Awesome!

 

Next thing to do is mount the slot into the NES. I chose the AA backyard method. Quick and easy (Nasty). Came up not too bad. Its only for myself so I was not too worried and the NES bascially cost me nothing. Just cut the slot using a dremel and then a used a file to get the edges straight. The famicom connector already had holes on either end of it so I just used that to fix the connector to the NES case.

Overall a fairly simple mod. A bit tedious with the 60 different solder points but if you take your time you can cross the line. I was reading that people have used old ISO slots as the cart slot for the fami and just trimmed them down. BTW you need to disabled the CIC security chip on the NES which is a matter of snipping one pin off the CIC chip.

Cool mod. Does it have to be a US NES, or can you do it to a PAL NES as long as you disable the CIC chip?

 

It should work fine but some games that are optimized for 60Hz will not play nice. Most will but some will have graphics glitches. I decided to do this on the US NES as you can see the case is very yellowed and not in a good state.

Great mod. That pic of the NES with the Famicom cart in it made me laugh though. All I could think of was the NES screaming.

No jail bars is awesome though. If only I had an old NES, I would shoot it down to you to work your magic :)

Haha. Just on this one. It was a one off. Pretty tricky and time consuming. I think you need to start getting your hands dirty mate :)
