Anti Virus software - any recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

My anti virus / internet security subscription runs out today I just noticed.

Wondering if I should just take the lazy option and renew, or look for a better product.

Have been using McAfee Total Protection on 3 user subscription for several years now.

Can't say I've had much of a drama with them, but then again don't know how well it's been doing it's job either.

Problem is they charge an arm and a leg when you renew, but can buy the same thing from a retailer for much less.

They always seem to have their hands in your pocket, however never had an issue getting a refund etc when cancelling something with them.

My question is to any of you IT savvy guys, is it a good product or can I do better re performance, ease of use and cost?

Should I bother with this sort of software at all?

Is there free stuff out there that is just as good?

I don't bother running any AV these days.

In times gone by I used to run AV, but still got an occasional virus.

Now that I don't run any AV, I'm more cautious about what I'm doing online and (touch wood) have been "clean" for years.

IMHO, these days you much more likely to suffer loss/damage through a phishing attack or other social engineering than any virus.

If you're worried about losing your data, then you should have it backed up anyway - again you're more likely to have a HDD hardware failure than you are to lose any data from a virus.

Ive used comodo for about 2 years now and its what I always install on customers PC's these days.. Firewall + AV/AS in one and it works as good as any paid subscription program..

But how did you know you got a virus then?? Was it the anti viurus that told you or you just find them yourself?? LOL

I bet your talking about virus's that actually stick out like dogs balls?? Like browser/explorer/start menu hijacking...

If you are part of a botnet or have some malicios (keylogger to grab banking details etc) you would never know until you actually run a scan with something so I just wonder how you make sure that your computer is 'clean' (do you manually go through the registry after every time surfing online?) :P

+1 except I still use MSSE as a backup.

Mate IMO its rubbish, I've had multiple malware slip through MSE's fingers and no longer trust it.

I'm using Bitdefender now.

Seems that way .I've been careful for years but since computer is now shared by a few people the other accounts pick up malware . Msse doesn't pick them up at all . Malwarebytes does . K9 doesn't . Frustrating , will try bitdefender next.

Yeah a few months back I got a nasty one that MSE missed and I though here we go again another fresh install. After doing some research a lot of people seemed to like Bitdefender and it was cheap. Ran it though the system and fixed all the issues which was a relief.

Malwarebytes seems popular also.

I used to use Norton 360, then it let a Trojan through - which it found - but couldn't get rid of. I had to download a program from the Symantec website to do it. After that I switched AVG free - then paid and upgraded to AVG internet security. Never had a problem since. Yes, whenever you install a new program and the first time it wants to access the internet - it will ask you to allow or block - just check allow for all and it will never ask you again. As for being intrusive in regards to webpages - it will sometimes warn you (if you're going to dodgy porn & warez pages) - but you can still proceed if you want. Dosn't slow down my PC either - even while running a scan (though i'm running an Intel i5 2500k @ 4.4ghz with 8gb ram). Like I said - never had any issues with it and would recommend it. Best of all AVG is free. Install it - if you don't like it uninstall & try another AV program! Edited by SeccaTango6

When I have to use Windows I also use Free Avira, but 99% of the time I use Linux (Ubuntu) when net surfing. Absolutely no worries about viruses with linux.

This operating system cant be infected with a virus... real cool and free to download. Just google search Ubuntu and install inside windows, then you have the best of both worlds.

Very good help network on line and help screens galore. Hope this is helpful.
