What retro stuff did you add to your stash this week?

Recommended Posts

And picked these up this week: was given this box of Kurz-Kasch bronze era test cards. Apparently they connect to a special test rig, and allow you to test stuff like Night Driver, Breakout and the other 1970s era boards without the full cabinet setup.

That's cool as, can't imagine there'd be much of that type of gear floating around anymore.

Mostly in the US for the test unit itself, although I bet the operator here in Hobart may have one buried in a shed [emoji23]

The games themselves? I’ve got several here, just lacking the hardware to set them up properly

I really need one of those... if only to play doom that is!

Just a heads up to anybody wanting to grab one, don't buy it from Ebay. The one there is the old version and is more expensive than buying it directly from https://www.thefuturewas8bit.com/

I figured it's pretty much got everything you'll ever need for the Vic 20 since a lot of games came out on cart. The new plus version also includes deadtest and several really cool new games Cheese & Onion, Pentagorat and RodMan

Alright, as a first post this is downright embarrassing, but if you're interested in oddware (I mean if you're REALLY interested), here's some very odd... ware. :D

The Vtech V.Smile was an educational game console released in 2004 that used cartridges. It was always meant to be played by small kids, but it enjoyed a moderate success (at least, I guess so, 'cause it spawned a series of different machines). All games were based on licensed franchises by Disney and others.

Well, browsing a local flee market I've found this: the kiosk version of the V.Smile, complete with a Nikkei monitor and a pre-loaded selection of games. :lol It's almost impossible to find images or info about this thing, i've only seen another one in some hotel photos and it had a different selection of games (same monitor brand, though). It's not even described in the V.Smile wikipedia page. The games are horrible, the big joystick is unresponsive and the composite video makes the Snes-level graphics look quite terrible, but it's a novelty... and I just couldn't resist. The green game selection buttons light up, that's neat.

Game roms are loaded from this PCB (sorry, out of focus shot):

Wow, thanks a lot Arcade King! This really took me by surprise  I'm sorry for the terrible pictures, I'll replace them with better shots when I have time (I mean, if you REALLY wanna see more of this thing). :D

I got my kids a vtech bitd secondhand. They played it a bit. Killed few controllers. Still see them popup at op shops

Really? I guess we should create a V.Tech owner list :D Well, from an educational standpoint it's not bad at all, but I feel the controls make simple games unnecessarily complex to play... I'm not surprised your kids broke a few controllers.

Hell yeah, random stuff like that is the best. Nice pickup!

Thanks! Can't get more random than this...

Been chasing mystery of silver mountain for awhile now. Its nice to have the pair and its a shame they didn't do more.

I have another copy of island of secrets which ive lost in my hoard somewhere along with build youre own adventure all by Usborne so i bought another copy. Island of Secrets seems far more common.

I typed island out a few years back on my 8088 PC in MS Basic and transfered it to the Apple II using ciderpress. Now I have my Apple II platinum set up its time for anther type in session.

@ Arcade King

Very nice finds. Text adventures and their early graphical hybrids on C64 are definitely a treasured genre for me too. There was a series by a company called "Mountain Valley Software" that I first played in primary school that I'd love to get originals for one day. I've had to contend myself with pirated copies all these years. "Mystery Island" was one of the first addictive games that made me dream about playing it. My IT/Typing teacher even put it on tape for me back in the day. I later met a mate in high school who copied more for me. :)

Anyhow, cool thread, it's fun to browse and keep an eye on what people are still finding out there.

I only wish I keep all my old mags so any leads to these sort of books is gold to me.

Thanks.

Whilst the console isn't retro, what you can do with it is.

I got a Playstation Classic for Fathers Day to toy around with.

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/playstation/playstation-classic-console/647110/

Whilst they rightly got a bad rap at release on both games AND price, at $59.00 they're a steal as you can now quickly and easily software mod it to play ALL PSX games and then many other consoles.

https://modmyclassic.com/bleemsync/

https://www.autobleem.tk/

A little bit of fun and small enough to carry around if needed. 2 x USB Playstation controllers and HDMI cable included! I've modded mine to play any Playstation game, NES, SNES, GB, SEGA etc too ;)

Cheers,

Brad
