Dedicated Sega Hang-On sit-down machine renovation

Recommended Posts

I just bought this dedicated Sega Hang-On sit-down machine locally off eBay for the total sum of $50 (less the $2 coin I found in the back of it already). Details are in this thread;

http://www.aussiearcade.com/showthread.php/37455-Someone-please-buy-this-so-I-m-not-tempted!

The seller had a starting price of $25 and BIN for $50.

This machine has seen better days but should be a fun machine once I get it going and find a few of the missing pieces.

So far I have found;

- monitor doesn't work (110v going to chassis but that's as far as I've gotten. No glow on the neck of the CRT. Chassis hard to get to for quick testing. Need to RTFM and probably ask Joey a lot of questions)

- Handle bar control assembly is missing brake lever and cable assembly, throttle and cable assembly, and someone has hacked up 2 buttons into the handle bar cover to mimic these and probably not real well

- Handle bar cover has been hacked a fair bit

- missing speedo/tacho graphic

- Original back-lit start button has been replaced by a standard one

- Monitor bezel has had a metal plate bolted onto the bottom edge, probably to cover up some damage

- Coin door assembly has been replaced by a non-original one with more rounded corners I suspect given the outline of the squarer cornered one that was probably there and no coin mech. Not a bad assembly though and can probably stay once a suitable coin mech is found.

- Rear door is delaminating and will need replacing (easy fix)

- Rear bottom edge of cab needs replacing (another easy fix)

- Some damage to rear left edge of cab on curve half way up (should be able to repair somehow and touch up artwork)

- Looks like the cabinet was out in the weather a little at some stage.

- seat appears to be from another machine. Should be simple and small padded bench seat and should be easy to make.

The good;

- cabinet artwork in reasonable condition with the usual shipping and usage scuffs & scratches

- marquee in very good shape and lights up nicely

- the steering assembly and control seem to work fine, but bit hard to confirm without video

- board set physically looks good and appears to be working, making all the right sounds just no picture as yet

- Cabinet lights either side of handle bars light up fine

- Once I sort out the monitor issue, machine should work but not using the original controls

I got a lot of good stuff for $50 and should be a good machine once working and a really good machine if partially or fully restored.

A complete steering control assembly sold on eBay back in April for $10.50 (!) in the USA, so I've sent a message to the buyer to see if he has any spares left over as a result. There are some NOS parts available, but they don't seem cheap.

So at this stage my idea would be to 'renovate' the machine as I don't have the time, money and attention span to do a full restoration. Maybe in the future.

As mentioned, the monitor isn't working at the moment and taking a closer look at the Nanao chassis it might explain why. There are a few holes burnt into the circuit board and there is a layer of dirt and grime on the parts side. The neck board doesn't look much better. There is also significant screen burn in, which almost looks like a black and white version of Hang-on so I'm pretty sure the solution to all of this is obvious and a simple one - track down a 20" (or 19" :unsure) TV tube and get one of Jomacs universal chassis :)

Lots to do BUT pretty impressive what you can find 'out and about' for the price of a carton :D

For what I have in mind for the initial reno, I'm hoping there's not too much work to get it looking and working half decently.

I have been in contact with a guy in Alabama who bought a full control assembly for $10.50 back in April and he will be sending me pics of what he has left. I'm hoping that this will be the majority of what I need and that I can get it for a reasonable price.

I think I will be going through a few cartons during this project so I should add that to the overall budget :lol

As mentioned, the bottom edge of the outer monitor bezel / surround has been damaged and covered up with a bolted on metal plate and looks like crap.

Unfortunately I suspect it is going to be difficult to track a replacement down so my initial thoughts are to design and cutout a piece of clear polycarb and place some artwork behind it in order to cover up the damage a bit more elegantly, at least until I find a replacement bezel.

The ideal artwork would be something similar to this Sega Outrun map, but I think I am going to have to outsource this to someone who is not as artistically challenged as I am.

Really makes me happy to see you're putting such effort into this project. Happy I passed on it now, couldn't have gone to a nicer guy :)

Good luck with it mate, once you get that monitor replaced everything's cosmetic. That artwork really looks great though, so vibrant.

Thanks for that, I'll try my best.

Even though it looks like the machine has seen a bit of weather, the artwork has survived without any fading. The left side is better than the right and the pics probably make it look a little better than what it is.

Believe me, you've done far more work already than I expected for the buyer to do. I honestly expected someone to buy it and stash it away in their shed :P

No one expects these things to be pristine. A bit of wear and tear just adds character. I wouldn't stress too much.

Proof of life

As the monitor is dead, I wanted to make sure the video output on the game board was at least working before I go ahead and get a new monitor.

My options were to either tap into the video output and connect it up to one of my other cabinets or try out the RGB SCART input on the little 14" Philips TV I bought a few weeks back. The latter seemed like the better option.

So I made up a SCART cable using the following pins;

SCART

7 Blue

11 Green

15 Red

20 Sync (composite video)

21 Ground

The I crudely tapped into the molex connectors coming out of the video loom of the game board and got this on the TV

1319828223_P1030515(Large).thumb.JPG.9a6283b0d3a4f5b379bec9774ca99e10.JPG

Basically a very bad black and white image. Scratching my head I thought I either have to loop up the ground to video grounds on the SCART connector (pins 5, 9 & 13) or that the TV hasn't switched into RGB mode and I need a 5v signal on pin 16 on the SCART connector in order for the TV to automatically do this. If it hasn't switched then it is just trying to output a composite signal using the sync from the game board.

The easier thing to try first was the 5v signal as I had already soldered this up on the SCART connector just in case. Next problem was to get a 5v signal from somewhere. The Hang-on board isn't JAMMA or anywhere near it so I tried to locate a 5v signal somewhere on the board sets. And this is what first sprung to mind.

1872415192_P1030506(Large).thumb.JPG.ba876fff0d7f300fd6d3a0cd4e21b16a.JPG

Yep, I tapped into the Vcc of a spare EPROM socket :lol

Switched the cabinet back on and this is what I got on the TV

2044719972_P1030509(Large).thumb.JPG.136a55a5f65212f89c8ccbc9165f22c8.JPG

The camera didn't capture it as good as it looks on the TV as it's quite good. TV probably needs some tweeking and I should still connect all the video grounds on the SCART as well.

So with the TV on the floor and me grabbing a hold of the handle bars, I was able to have a few games and all seems to work. Will be nicer once I get a throttle and brake lever rather than using the hacked buttons on the dash.

Nice!

I thought the obvious thing to do would be to throw that TV in it?

The TV was just to test the video signal as it is only a 14" TV and I need a 20". Turning out to be a valuable TV to test out stuff like this as it is nice and luggable with a handle on top.

Actually today I tried out a NOS 21" monitor and chassis I had and it seemed to work well. Even though it's slightly bigger I'm going to try and make a mount for it and see how it all fits together. I should then be able to shrink the picture to fit the standard bezel.

Not a great deal of progress. I made a mount for the 21" monitor but it just needs a little bit of tweeking and then I need to figure out a way to mount the chassis so that the CRT and chassis can be removed in one piece so it can be all connected and serviced in the future.

One interesting thing I just discovered is that the seat that came with the cabinet that I thought was a hack job by some op or owner turns out to be the original, unless someone in the USA used the same seat to hack their cab as well. It can be seen in this eBay ad

http://cgi.ebay.com/Sega-Hang-Sit-Down-Arcade-Game-Complete-/320618776829?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa65e48fd#ht_500wt_1156

I've never seen this type of seat in any of the original Sega marketing material so just assumed it wasn't original.

So I guess I'll need to restore this as well.

I've been trying to get pics and a price from this guy but he has gone to ground. Hopefully he was just very busy leading up to Christmas so we'll see what happens after the break. He seemed very helpful and friendly at first so not too sure what's going on.

So 7 years on for this machine of mine too and not much has happened apart from;

1. Figuring out the hard way that I never did tell my wife about this machine until I mentioned it the other day and she knew nothing about it :lol All good though

2. I did test then install a NOS 21” 15kHz CRT back then and custom made some brackets and was working on a mount for the chassis when life got in the way.

3. On eBay US today, I got a handle bar control almost complete except for brake lever and cable. Shipping to my BIL in Sacramento and then will bring it back next trip by us or family.

4. Found an original clean Sega coin door in the US too so will end up getting that as well.

5. Found a decent PDF scan of the manual so will put together a shopping list

Still looking for a screen bezel amongst other bits.

Will be replacing the power supply, 240v to 110v isolation transformer sooner rather than later I think.

Yes more pics please. I may have some compatible parts. I had a Sega Paperboy at one stage and "may" have some parts around here.

Thanks Steve. Would be interested in seeing what parts you have and I will post pics of what I need shortly.

Here is the handle bar I got off eBay US last week, just missing the brake lever and cables and the grips are probably non original but heaps better than the hack job I currently have. Might not see it for a while as it will be parked at my brother-in-laws place in Sacramento along with other bits I'll be buying until family come over or we go back for a visit.

And the Sega coin door I got too. More original than what I have (mine I think is a Coin Changers brand with more rounded corners) but maybe not an exact match for the Hang On as the bottom door seems to have 2 overlapping layers rather than a single pressed piece. But close enough as long as the size is right.

I was up late last night searching for more parts and came across this Brake Lever. As it turns out, was the same seller as the coin door above but under a slightly different name and I don't think he had it listed when I bought the coin door.

Unfortunately I decided to go to bed before verifying it was the right one and it was gone by the time I woke up this morning. This is a case of literally "You snooze, you lose!" :lol

s-l160014.thumb.jpg.a407caf0acbaa4e604170cf855bc0647.jpg

The good this is that Sega apparently used actual motorbike parts where it made sense to so I should be able to use an aftermarket or original Japanese motorbike lever either permanently or until I find another original.

The same guy also has an "original" sound amp but I don't really want to pay US$70 + shipping for it. And I have a working sound amp currently in the cab so in no hurry for an original.

This one is showing part #834-5313 and the US manual says it should be GR-4600. It's something I shouldn't bother with as I'm thinking of replacing the power supply with a more generic one and it will probably struggle to provide the required original 39v 15w power.

Some progress, 1 more year on.

I’m finally in the US at my BIL’s place and have been tidying up my replacement control panel and it looks quite good, especially compared to the crappy one I currently have. Found some nuts and bolts at the local hardware and am trying to source a hand brake from a local motorcylce spares place. Turns out Sega used parts from a 1984 Honda CB650 / Nighthawk so what I am looking for is these originals or reasonable quality after market ones;

- 53166-390-780 (Grip left) 53165-390-780 (grip right)

- 53175-MB0-006 (brake lever )

Coin door is pretty good too but just noticed it’s missing the actual coin mechs. Any ideas what coin mechs would suit this setup?

Dedicated Sega Hang-On sit-down machine renovation

Back home in Brissy and a little progress made today. Out with the shitty old stuff

86b51eb3f6dddf60daef58a0ac740f81.jpg

and in with the new (old and better) stuff

32edf4aba92a486a44d219fbf579ab60.jpg

a57336ed92f64dd678ffcae81eda0722.jpg

I knew the old stuff was badly hacked but didn't realise just how much till I got the new bits in. All the controls and mechanisms for brake and accelerator were removed and replaced with 2 crappy little buttons on the dash. And the handle bars were cut down around 50mm each end, not sure why.

6d567a2df4007b505cc9ef5ec101b8ef.jpg

Still needs a tidy up but just doing a rough assembly while deciding how far I can and want to take the repairs.
